I can remember my mom singing this all the time when my father was in Vietnam. He was killed in there in 1969. Everytime she heard it she cried. I just lost her in June 2022. She never stopped loving my father even though she had alzheimers
I remember hearing this while stationed in Saigon and danang. Popular song for guys close to going back home. When I hear it now brings back a lotof memories. Sorry tohearaboutyour loss.
Love never dies, my heart goes, out to, you and your family my friend. I, am 54, from the UK and love this song! A Beautiful Song can, and will cross all oceans, if you listen, and are kind xxx
My husband passed away two weeks ago. He loved country music and we enjoyed going to the concerts. I love this song by Merle Haggard and it's helping me get through this sad time.
My father just passed two days ago and listening to Merle Haggard makes this nostalgic feeling come over me, bc he was my dads favorite! He loved a good ole country classic. I will miss my daddy so very much!! May he rest in peace!
My Dad was a Ranger. Was a POW for almost 25 Months. Went on to do 4 Tours in Vietnam. When I told him That I was going Airborne.. Mix of tears and pride. When I said I applied to the SF.... We sat all night not a word said... Bur so much was said. My your father rest in the Arms of the Lord.
This song was popular as I was leaving for Vietnam in Jan 1966. It was a sad day. They played it on AFN while I was in Vietnam. Was so glad when I came home in Jan 67. Its meaning and lyrics are haunting. It played when I left my wife going to Europe in 1968, and was glad when she joined me in Europe a month or so later. But the song was on our minds as we boarded the plane with our child a little over a year later to bring them home so that I could continue on another flight to Vietnam. I returned in June 1970 from Vietnam to a wife and 2 girls. So happy to be home. We made several more tours of duty in Europe, finally returning to the USA and retiring with a family that included 8 children.
My wife and I danced to this song just before I had to fly off on a Navy deployment in 1970. We were so young and so in love and we had a tiny baby boy. Leaving them hurt so much. To this day, this song takes me back to that evening so long ago and it still makes my heart hurt. Merle is the best.
My grandfather is a huge Merle Haggard fan, he loved performing his songs at country music festivals. He's a short, muscular maori man with deep-set eyes, a mischievous smile and a voice like honey. My sister and I just spent the past 4 days with him in the hospital to help our Nani as his dementia has rendered him partially bedridden. I sang this for him while my Nani went home for a sleep. He joined in on 3 lines. I love him so much. Kia Kaha my Koro. ❤
Idk who is following this post. But my grandfather passed 4 days ago. I'm sitting with his urn as we speak singing this song to him. Idk who's gonna see this in the void. But that's my truth right now. Kia kaha te whanau. Aroha nūi Kia koe.
Doesn't matter if you watched silver wings fading out of sight in 1969, 1979, 1989, or 1999 as serviceman you know how this captures the depth of the emptiness of your soul in the moment.
This song was on the radio, my husband was leaving for Vietnam! I cried so hard! Praise the Lord he made it home, but was never the same 19 year old kid! War makes people do things they never dreamed of doing!
God Bless I remember my Uncle in 1966 getting on a plane heading to Vietnam, it was the last time we saw him. He was a Chief Master Sergeant USAF had served in WWII and was a POW, then Korea his last tour of duty was Vietnam 6 months then his plane went down.. Our family was never the same.
God bless him and all those who miss him. We use the term "hero" so loosely these days, but your Uncle was a true hero. He gave himself to save others. Stay strong and honor him.
katydid mccarthy actually he was a hero. During the 2nd WW his aircraft was hit and his direct action saved the plane and those men under his command. Command Master Sgt. Hardy L. Bell from Paris Texas. There are several articles written about him. Though he became a POW during WWII, he went on to serve in Korea and Vietnam where he was killed in an airplane crash just 6 months before finishing a long distinguished career in the air force. My mother never got over the loss of her brother.
My mom's brother Vito was in WWII and during a beach landing he was sprayed with 5 machine gun bullets across his back. Amazingly he survived but 3 of those bullets remained in his back. He made it home but every so often a red bump would come up on his back and it was a bullet. Our doctors removed it. Ironically, he was killed by a drunk driver coming home from a baseball game. To survive a war and then be killed by one of our own is unfathomable.
This was the song that played at my grandpas funeral today. It was the first song played and also the song played when we set him on the lowering device to be lowered into the ground.
Recently, my husband, George, purchased Merle's Greatest Hits CD. He had this song playing and told me when he was in the Marine Corps, stationed in Okinawa, Japan, they would play this song the evening before a marine would be leaving to go home.
I absolutely love this song. My parents were musicians back in the 60s 70s and '80s and my mom and dad used to sing the song on stage. Absolutely love this song and I love Merle Haggard.

I used 2 sing it 2 my wife a lot in 1973 when we got married it was her favorite country song our signature song she passed away in 2021 March 30 we were married almost 48 years
My mom and I sang this together among MANY songs when I was just a lil girl. I'm almost 58 now. My mom and my aunt were invited on Ted Mac show. Never came to fruition but they harmonized every bit as good as even the Everly Brothers. That's a broad statement but TRUE!! I was gifted w my Aunt's power and my Mom's true honkey tonk twang, lol. I love Music and I will NEVER lose my love for country, honky tonk and Hee 🤠 Has corn Field. NEVER forget where you came from!!! Life long memories of my parents. God rest their souls!!! God bless EVERYONE!! Family is EVERYTHING!!! The Good, the bad the ugly . Lol.

Wow! This song was a standard in the clubs when I was stationed in South Korea back in 1979-80! Everyone sang along! It had deep meaning for all of us regardless of race, color, ethnic background, etc. Man, this takes me back!
My favorite Haggard song, along with Hungry Eyes. I served during this time, never made it to SEA, went to Europe. I salute all who went to Viet Nam especially those who sacrificed everything!
He wrote this 1968 if I remember correctly, and it came out on vinyl in 1969...I remember vividly with whom I danced it with...after his return from Vietnam....I have the record...oh the memories....
@@Brekstahkid im 15 and feel more connected to the older generations than millineals and my crazy generation! i love old music like this and old stories
I remember, got married at 16, in June of 1970! This song was on the radio! My husband left to Basic Training! I started my Senior year in HS in Illinois! That was one of the hardest years of my life!
S silver wings was one of the most beautiful songs I've ever heard Merle Haggard get a wonderful job with this song and it's still going strong TKS for sharing this iNCREDABLE SONG 💯👍👍
Like in the song Who’s Gonna Fill Their Shoes by the late great country music legend George Jones. Nobody can ever fill their shoes cause they’re the reason country music was so great back then.

One of my all time favorite songs. This was my parents song. They both passed away in 2002. My mom of heart failure in March and my Dad of asbestos cancer in June. This song was played at both their funerals. When i go out singing karaoke i always sing this song. They loved it when i sung it.
This song has so much meaning for me.... JA had just left our church on Sunday nite to go back home to Marble Falls.. My parents had just eaten my butt out that I was getting to serious about JA... knew I didn't want to go home just now and try and eat supper with them and get some more chewing out... so I went to Jake and Dorothy's Cafe … and I play this song on the Juke box... made me sad and lonely..that was 50 years ago... me and JA will celebrate or 49th this year....
Silver wings was my grand mother’s favorite song, I can remember setting in the truck every morning and her playing it on her CD, it’s been 8 yrs now and on the day she pasted I play this song for her.
I grew up on merle, johny, all of the oldies my grandparents raised me. I'm 33, single dad of two boys myself. My grandpa played eight tracks and vinyls all the time I remember it like the back of my head and I find myself listening to the oldies often, like this. Miss them
My dad and I always danced to this song if we heard it at a wedding or a dance we were at. We haven't been anywhere like that for many years but it always makes me think of him when I hear it. I'm so lucky he is still here with me. My mom passed away last August and it still hurts.
Was my pawpaw favorite song. He just passed at 92, came from Scotland as a little boy. Married my grandmother and 9 months later to the date had their first kid. Had 8, raises awesome families. Lived the true American dream
My uncle Steve taught me this song when I was young. He played his guitar and I would sing, off key, but he never seemed to mind. He left this world a few days ago. I think hes playing his guitar in heaven with my dad and uncle Jim. I love you and miss you " uncle teitelbaum " ❤ rest in peace.
Our band plays this song from time to time, and, as a silent request, from me, we played this for my Uncle Jr, a couple weeks ago, on the night he passed. I found out that he passed away about 15 minutes before I had to leave for the gig. So, the gig was for him, and, especially that song. He was a great person that I should've spent more time with, regardless of life's whatever's. I'm very thankful for the memories that I do have though. & He laughed like Barney Rubble when he got going. I loved it. You'll always be missed Jr. ❤️🎼
I'm 13 years old and I love merle haggard and my dad did to this April 22 it will be 2 years hes been dead and we got in arguments and I got mad at him alot but I loved him and I miss him😥 I love u dad I'll always remember you but you have no more pain now all the seziers are gone now I love you dad fly high😭
This song brings so many memories back. I can still remember my dad bouncing around singing this with his earphones on. Not realising everyone could hear him and not Merle. Great song from a great artist 💙

I put her and my daughter on a plane in grand forks , took the pick up and headed for Jamestown. I can see the Dakota prairie , the sun going down , never wanted to leave home, but sometimes there's forces at work you can't control , like an out going tide. Sometimes a song says it all , this one was on the radio as I was driving that day.
