I was delighted to see the Filipinos sharing their cultural performance. Hawaii is now a melting pot of cultures and make up a significant amount of the population. Thank you merrie monarch for making this happen.

Aloha and Mabuhay! I felt nostalgic when I saw the ethnic dances from the Philippines performed at the Merrie Monarch. I was a member of the University of the Philippines Filipiniana Dance Troupe and in Hawaii, I used to dance with the Labez family members (Sulyap Company for the Performing Arts). We used to dance at State events, beauty pageants (some of our recruits were beauty pageant winners), and Chamber events. In the Philippines, I met with classmates Ms. Abella, Cultural Center of the Philippines, and Ms. Maria Margarita Roxas Moran Floirendo, Ms. Universe, and President, Ballet Philippines to coordinate the performances at the Hawaii Theater of the Mindanao State University Iligan Institute of Technology Integrated Performing Arts Guild.

Considering the significant population of Hawaii are Filipinos. Just like Guam and Marianas. Well, ancestors of Polynesia migrated from the Philippines after all. Autronesian culture is awesome.
@kantakouzini

they were INVITED to perform! shut up and watch or leave and watch something else, its really that simple. Hawaiians and Filipinos are connected by language and by blood, were both Austronesian speaking peoples obviously we've other cultures that influenced up but thats not the point here and neither that of the folk dances presented here. Hawaiians ancestors migrated over thousands of years from maritime SE Asia and this invitation/performance at the Merrie Monarch Ho'ike should be something to be proud of - to see our peoples coming together and sharing our culture - which is alike - so just enjoy it~

@@steveboy7302 if u live in philipine rural areas and pacific islands. you will see the similarity. The lifestyle , language and mentality. Filipino fisher men build banka by hand and can fish in pacific without compass. Some filipinos live entirely in the sea. Filipinos had both spanish influence and austronesian/polynesian dances. Even in the cities we still dance native ways during fiestas.

This comment section did not pass the vibe check. Anyways just saying Filipinos and Hawaiians are relatives. We descended from austronesians who travelled from Mainland Asia then to Taiwan then to the Ph then to the rest of SEA and the Pacific. Thats why you see tremendous linguistic diversity among the many indigenous tribes in Taiwan. Hawaiians are just as much as our relatives as the Malays and Indos.

watch the link below to the 1937 movie called "zamboanga" (an island south of the philippines). this is a treasure because the copy was only recently found in Finland. just scub the movie to 43:20 and you will see a dance performance that has strong similarities with our close neighbor in indonesia. the long fingernails and the head dress typical balinese but I wouldn't be surprised if the similarities are striking because to this day, the culture intersperse among the Philippines, Indonesia and Malaysia through the seafaring nomadic badjao tribe of the Philippines and the bajau tribes of malaysia and indonesia . link to the film "Zamboanga" below. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-EWb6fo8ZbYI.html (just scub the movie to 43:20 and you will see a dance performance that has strong similarities with our close neighbor in indonesia)

Ilocanos, if you know your geography, are Filipinos from the northernmost tip of the northern island of the country. In itself doesn’t mean much until you realize that Austronesians (who Ilocanos descended from) started out in Taiwan, which was an island a few miles north of the country that is now known as Philippines. These are the same ancestors of Hawaiians, Maori and Samoans. We share the same ancestors except Ilocanos ancestors, after sailing what amounted to a really big lake, landed on the first island they came across and said, “fuck it, I ain’t going further.” To wit, our ancestors stayed in the exact same spot, the northern most tip of the Philippines for the next 2,000 years. Not even bothering to move further south of the island.

The Philippines is also an Austronesian culture (the direct descendants of Aboriginal Taiwanese, the direct ancestors of Chamorro), though being closer to the mainland, we've had more foreign cultural influences come in through the recent centuries. That first dance, with the guys with the axes? It's a shame they didn't highlight the Philippine tattoos on those dancers (even if only in temporary henna or something). You might have recognized one of our common Austronesian cultural heritages. Merrie Monarch has featured other Austronesian peoples in the past as well. Aboriginal Taiwanese, Tahitian, and Maori. They've also invited Mexico. It's not part of the competition. Just an exhibition of other cultures of the Pacific. In the case of Austronesians, it provides a background as well for Hawaiian culture. It helps you understand the connections and the origins with the rest of the Austronesian cultures (like the previously mentioned pan-Austronesian tattooing tradition). The concept of "mana" for example, exists throughout most of Polynesia, as basically a general concept of power from the spirit world. In Taiwan, the Philippines, and Micronesia, however, in the indigenous pre-colonial shamanistic beliefs, a similar concept of spiritual power derives from spirit "twin" of humans, i.e. the soul which journeys to the spirit world in dreams, trances, and in death (proto-Austronesian *qanicu, "spirit of the dead"; Aboriginal Taiwanese "anitu"; Filipino "anito"; Chamorro "aniti"; Pohnpeian "eni"). The cognates survive in Polynesian as well, as "aitu", with various meanings, from simply "spirit of the dead" (Samoan) to "evil spirit/demon" (Maori) to "god/nature spirit" (Tahitian). Interestingly another Polynesian cognate, "atua", was basically a synonym of "mana" while also meaning "god/nature spirit".

Before maraming bansa pa sa pilipinas in short maraming kaharian maraming tao iba iba ang dugo may malay may indo may aita at maraming salinlahi ang nasa pilipinas noon. Kaya di malayong baka meron tayong dugong Polynesian or asean or what so ever kasi tayo ay tinaguring maraming pulo kada pulo maraming kaharian kaya hindi tayo iisa noon pero nakikipag ugnayan na tayo sa ibang bansa noon paman at malaki ang ginagampanan natin sa mundo noon man at ngayon kaya... There are no similarities in culture, traditions and more simply put, language, food, dance, etc. If they were, don’t you think they’d assimilate into the Hawaiian culture, or at least contribute something significant, but they don’t and never have.

PHILIPPINES TRADITIONAL IS VERY AUSTRONESIAN CULTURE.. THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN THEM AND INDONESIA, MALAYSIA, THAI, CAMBODIA IS THEY MORE AUTHENTIC THAN US.. WE GOT HINDU BUDDHIST INFLUENCE IN OUR CULTURE EVENTHOUGH WE'RE ALSO AUSTRONESIAN.. AND MALAYSIA GOT ISLAMIC CULTURE.. IT'S VERY INTERESTING TO SEE AS FOREIGNERS. FOREIGNERS WANT TO SEE THE CULTURAL ATTRACTION. ALSO NOT ONLY BEACHES AND NATURE ATTRACTION..

Not a bright one ain't ya? It's the damn hoike night. It's an invitational part of Merrie Monarch and they can damn well invite whomever they want to invite.

Merrie Monarch is yearly event in Hilo, Hawaii. It is a week long festivities of Polynesian cultural dances from 15 different countries in the South Pacific. Though mentioned that it is an international event, for years now, it mainly focuses on culturally honed Kumu Hulas and their Halau Members skillfully showing their craft in performing their dances deeprooted from their ancestors. Having said so, i felt pain in my heart having watched my kababayans perform Filipino Folk Dances here, because this is not the place to show our rich cultural heritage. Could have it been in Thailand, a Cultural event, then it would suffice. Magkaroon 'naman' tayo ng delikadesa. Salamat po.

Sus... si ate naman... this is Ho'ike night. This is the non-competitive portion of the Merrie Monarch. The groups in the Ho'ike portion are invited to perform. It is an honor to be invited to perform in Hoi'ke. Kayamanan Ng Lahi was the first ever Filipino group to perform on behalf of the Philippines. Please just enjoy. Bakit plaguing nag-criticize tayo.

Filipinos have a very diverse ancestry (well, asia, europe and polynesia), but what they did here is, for me, somehow, inappropriate. Much better if they used the Filipino tribal dance instead of the Muslim-Christian-influenced performance.
@devilusadvocatias
@devilusadvocatias 7 лет назад
Pero... included dances are from the Cordillera groups and Lumad dances which are non-Muslim/Christian-influences. At ang dances ng mga Maranao at Tausug predate Islam. Those dances are non-religious. The theme of the performance was Mana (legacy in Tagalog and spiritual energy in Hawaiian). The group, as the first Filipinos invited to the Merrie Monarch, aimed to highlight the rich relationship between the Philippines and Hawaii.

Dan Kenneth Lazo it is not a muslim influenced. There is no such thing muslim influence mister. It is a Malay indo culture brought by the Malays, Chinese, Indian migrants came to the Philippines during the reign of the Sriwijayas and Majapahit people( Javanese, Malays) they brought religion, literature, language, dances. They are trading here long before the islam missionaries came to Mindanao thru Shariff Makdum from Borneo-Malaysian-Arab people. It is not a muslim influenced it is a Malay-Indo culture brought by them. Mindanao is a very diverse because of the Migrants who intermarried the natives(Polynesian) that is why most of us filipinos have a white skin and brown skin.
