Tinikling Philippine Folk Dance at the University of Pittsburgh Cathedral of Learning by the Philippine-American Performing Arts of Greater Pittsburgh in which our dear daughter is a member.
*This is an Open-House event (not a competition) where different countries can share their different cultures.
Pittsburgh, Pa, USA
*Note: We are not professional dancers and we are all volunteers. Some have little to no experience in dancing at all but we are all trying to do our best to experience and share our rich culture. Thank you!

Its not as easy as it looks. When you actually try in person you get anxiety and try to avoid the bamboo that might cause you to go off beat and make a mistake. My friend hurt her ankle and took a couple of days to heal.

@Harold and pattern and control of anxiety. It honestly takes a lot to dance like that without the anxiety of making a mistake, because this time your mistake can be obvious AND hurt you. Footwork is also key to the rhythm, so you won't confuse which foot should be used and that your confusion won't add in to your anxiety. Seriously, just by looking at the dance made me anxious

I'm so proud being a Filipino. We're rich in Culture & History ❤️ This Tinikling Dance is one of the hardest Folk Dance in the Philippines. We're used to perform this in our school ( Folk Dance Competition ) and looking down is a huge deduction. We practice this dance almost yearly in our P.E. Class (Physical Education, for some people who doesn't know it yet) and this became part of our studies because if you dance this properly it can slightly increase your grades so I'm willing to dance this even I am not a good dancer. Just for Grades Lol 😆 In this video I noticed the girl in 3:53 who made a mistake AND I FEEL YOU GIRL SO MUCH as the music gets faster and faster your feet gets numb and tired so one wrong step your feet will be pinned to the bamboo 😭 that's okay don't mind your mistake, you've done your best better than mine and I'm so proud of you, all of you ❤️ thanks for representing our country🇵🇭 I'm so sorry guys my English is bad..

Omg, I forgot I ever learnt this beautiful dance as a 9-year-old (now 37) as well as another dance with candles? A local school would host a cultural dance festival to showcase different ethnicities in our community. One of my favourite teachers is Filipino. She shared with us her love of her home country, language and her culture. We only had a handful of Asian students in a predominately Polynesian school (Sth Akl NZ) so there were only a few of us lucky to be asked to join her cultural group (as well as our own). Although we were nervous about representing someone else's culture she loved us we just wanted to see her happy and make her proud

I danced tinikling when i was in 4th grade and i think our choreo was more difficult than this one. Tho what gave me cold sweats was pandango (5th grade) 😂 danced mgllatik too and one with castanets and the one where you use bamboo sticks i forgot what it's called 😂 growing up in the province js really nice. I got to dance every year throughout my elementary school yearsss

I looked this up while trying to describe to a friend the dance we used to do in elementary school, and how bad it hurt when you messed up. We were never taught the cultural origins of tinikling, unfortunately.

When I first did this during my elementary days, my timing was a bit off so I got hit by those bamboo sticks a lot of times and damn, it was painful that I got bruises. One rule here is you should never look down and keep your eyes on the audience. But now, most people can't do that. I f*cking admire my ancestors for that❤ P.s. Folk dance in the Philippines will never disappear in our P.E curriculum even until college. And Tinikiling originated from Leyte. Damn, I'm from Leyte. It's pobably why this always have a soft part in my heart.

There's this dance called "Bamboo dance" (of the Mizo tribe) in the North Eastern states (the origin being Mizoram) of India, that utilizes bamboos in a criss-crossing set up, which has, I believe, similar footsteps to this dance.
