As an American, I agree generally that the UK, Ireland, and Australia produce better actors. I think the fact that Meryl Streep has been acting her heart out since the '70s gives her more weight, though. Even Diane Keaton, De Niro, Pacino, and Nicholson, some of the best regarded American actors, have largely either moved to light comedies or have become caricatures of themselves. Meryl Streep STILL performs at the highest level. I thought she was overrated until her work in The Devil Wears Prada led me to delve into her '70s and '80s movies. Her work spans at least 3 eras of filmmaking. Cate Blanchett may have more depth, but she simply hasn't given the same number of incredible performances. And she is extremely beloved here in America! Regularly cited as THE best of her generation (I think most people agree that if she didn't already have 2 Oscars, she would have won for Tar), and everyone knows her from Lord of the Rings, so she's prominent in pop culture. Give her 20 more years, and she'll probably be named side by side with Bette Davis and Meryl Streep as the greatest actresses of all time.

However, Blanchett has been around since the early 90s, as far back as "Elizabeth" and "The Talented Mr Ripley," long before she won her first Oscar in "The Aviator" and starred in "The Lord of the Rings." Streep, on the other hand, may not carry an epic historical period piece or character drama like Cate Blanchett. They can't even be compared. Even Blanchett does a better job of portraying an American than Meryl Streep, who is American herself. "Blue Jasmine" is a testament to that. I apologize for saying this, but there's something about Aussie actors like Russell Crowe in "Gladiator," "Cinderella Man," and "A Beautiful Mind," or Geoffrey Rush in "The King's Speech," or even Mel Gibson in "Braveheart" (yes, he's American, but he started his acting career in Australia and attended the same acting school as Cate Blanchett) where they excel. Just look at the caliber of work by UK actor Daniel Day Lewis, who has even portrayed Abraham Lincoln and won 3 Oscars. They seem more deserving than Streep's numerous nominations. I'm sorry to say this, but the Hollywood caliber of American actors hasn't been the same since the 80s, and the talent has been replaced by highly trained actors from the UK, Ireland, and Australia. What I would say Streep is good at is the likability factor, which most Americans excel at. She shines in comedies and dramas that are relevant to American culture but may not have much appeal outside the US. I know I might be opening a can of worms here, but yeah, Streep hasn't won me over, mate. She seems to represent pure manufactured Hollywood nostalgia, a boys club that keeps nominating themselves.

@@DJarvis1987 Not arguing her greatness, but she really wasn't in anything until 1997, and her first Oscar nominated performance was the next year. Every American that knows anything about film that I've talked to thinks that Blanchett should have won her first Oscar in 1999 for Elizabeth, over Gwyneth Paltrow. 😆
