I think this is the Decade where she branched out to show us more range in different genres (comedy, action, and her musical prowess). Thus, when it comes to this decade I'm more impressed with that than her Oscar nominations.
I wish Meryl had Oscars for Kramer Vs Kramer, Sophie's Choice, The Bridges Of Madison County, Adaptation, and Doubt, taking away her win for The Iron Lady.
Thank you for putting these wonderful clips together & your insightful comments. I always tell my friends Streep's top five characters in films are: Kramer vs. Kramer, Sophie's Choice, Silkwood, Bridges of Madison County, and Devil Wears Prada, nobody else could have played these roles more convincingly and profoundly (although my personal favorite Streep movie is "Out of Africa.") Also, "Marvin's Room" and "A Cry in the Dark" prove Brian's point: Streep loves to pick unconventional roles that explore character depth & human psychology. I am very glad to see "Devil Wears Prada" wins critics', mainstream audience's and her fans' love all at the same time. Look forward to your further tribute to and critique on Streep's extraordinary film career.
There's a lovely moment during her "Inside the Actors' Studio" interview, talking about the moment in "Bridges" when the two main characters first meet, and Francesca turns aways and briefly covers her rear end with her hand. Streep said it was a moment when a woman wants to hide what she thinks is a negative about her body, showing just how nuanced and exact she is as a performer.
I can totally see Hollywood being not quite ready to hand Streep her 3rd Oscar in the 90s. Postcards is one of my favorite films I watch over and over even though I think Streep was maybe miscast despite being amazing in it. Death Becomes Her is just a wild ride that Streep has a ball in. I look forward to your 00's video, cause I think she deserved her 3rd Oscar for Prada, even though it was a comedy. Comedic performances have won before, like Cher and Glenda Jackson. Prada wasn't a big overall contender though despite being a big hit.
The most fascinating things about Meryl's noms is how many are films that are barely known anymore. I have never heard of Music of the Heart and One True Thing! Ironically, Death Becomes Her has aged so well.
I love DEATH BECOMES HER because it was was a delight to see Streep and Goldie Hawn in a movie together. Madeline Ashton is supposed to to be a bad actress and Meryl plays her so deliciously. If you’re gonna be play a bad actor you must be a great actor and Streep does that
I loved Meryl in Postcards From The Edge. It may have been one of her first early roles where her character was looser, not so tightly wound, and more vulnerable. A great scene is towards the end when her director played by Gene Hackman quietly expresses his confidence that she can straighten out her life.
I loved this video so much! That run of movies and amazing performances: Postcards From The Edge, Defending Your Life, Death Becomes Her, The River Wild, The Bridges Of Madison County, Marvin's Room, and One True Thing. This is such an underrated but amazing period of Streep's I love so much. Like Madonna did musically in the '90s, this is the period Meryl reinvented herself and proved she could excel in multiple genres: drama, comedy, action, musical and romance! The Bridges Of Madison County would have made a fabulous win and The River Wild would have aged really well as a nominee as well. Can't wait for her best period: the 2000s, to come ❤ Thanks, Brian!
As a very young gay boy in the early 90’s, I thought I was an alien because I thought Death Becomes Her was the most amazing movie ever made and no one else seemed to like it. I feel so vindicated now that everyone seems to appreciate it. I was so looking forward to your video about this time era in Meryls career. As always, you did not disappoint! Bravo! ❤
These videos are like catnip! You're doing such a great job! I haven't seen, but want to see, The River Wild, Music Of The Heart and One True Thing. I saw Death Becomes Her in movie theaters when I was like 10-11 years old and my little gay heart exploded, I still love it so much. Postcards From The Edge is perfect (I would have added that if anyone could have challenged Kathy Bates that year, it was Anjelica Huston in The Grifters, what a performance!), Defending Your Life is something I saw recently for the first time and loved it. The Bridges Of Madison County and Marvin's Room were also both recent watches for us, and they were both heartbreaking and perfect. GWEN VERDON in Marvin's Room going down Splash Mountain I mean come on!!! (And Diane Keaton of course!) Keep these videos coming buddy!!
I'll never understand why "House of the spirits" is so underrated. I find it deeply touching. Not an intellectual masterpiece but moving and entertaining.
Bridges is probably my favorite Streep film and performance from the 90's, though Postcards and OTT are up there too. At the time, I really thought Meryl had a good shot at "finally" (in my mind) winning her 3rd Oscar. It had been awhile and she had so many noms since her last win that I thought the Academy - who clearly loved her - finally had enough reason to give Meryl her 3rd statue for a fantastic performance in a film that was also well-received critically. Plus it was a box-office hit, which let's face it, the Academy tends to favor. But alas, it was another loss - her 6th straight.😠 Little did I know at the time, there would be 6 *more* losses before we Streepers would be able to finally hear her name called again.
Streep (my favorite actress ever) acts with all her body (people that say she is cerebral are totally wrong). The scene in One True Thing (a movie I watched just once) where she wants to check the pie and burns her hand. That reaction! God! You cannot calibrate such a reaction. I still remember that scene. She is one of the greatest of all time. ❤😊
I'd like to think Meryl Streep was probably second in contention for The Bridges of Madison County after Susan Sarandon for Dead Man Walking just for the truck rain scene alone. But, Sarandon had the image-challenging, nuance-drawn, political-social commentary film that remains timeless. If it was anyone else but Sarandon, it would have been Streep's.
1990 I enjoy her in PFTE but find her slightly miscast she's far funnier in Death Becomes Her,MacLaine steals the film,I'd have replaced Meryl with Debra Winger in The Sheltering Sky. 1995 One of her Top 3 best and probably should have won her 3rd but I also love Stone and Shue. 1998 Wonderful work as usual certainly better then Gwyneth. 1999 Her most filler of filler nominations i'd have replaced her with Sigourney Weaver in A Map Of The World. 1996 Would have mad a better nominee than Keaton but lots of competition with Madonna,Debbie Reynolds,Winona Ryder,Nicole Kidman,Gena Rowlands and Courtney Love all snubbed. 1994 She's solid but nothing worthy of a nom. 1992 If Oscar went for all out comedy more often she would have probably got a nomination.
I did love Music of the Heart, in major part, because I, at the time, was an aspiring violist who would later learn and play the violin in high school. Also, she elevated the whole film. Angela Bassett was also great. I was delightfully surprised that it was directed by horror-famed director Wes Craven. I agree that Shirley should have gotten nominated alongside Meryl in Postcards from the Edge, a great film, and given Carrie recognition for her writing
"Postcards" is one of those movies I turn younger folks on to all the time--it's so brilliant and irreverent, with perfect writing, direction and performances (MacLaine gives one of her greatest performances). "The River Wild" is also a forgotten gem--a really well crafted thriller.
1995 had so many snubs : Kathy Bates in Dolores Claiborne, Jennifer Jason Leigh in Dolores Claiborne, Alicia Silverstone in Clueless, Nicole Kidman in To Die For
So true. I remember being very surprised by Nicole's exclusion at the time. And don't get me started on Dolores Claiborne. It's one of my all-time favorites and I think it was snubbed across the board. A superb film that could've - and should've - been nominated for almost everything with the exception of costume and production design.
Oh and besides the 2 leads (I think Kathy was robbed of a potential 2nd win, not just nom), it deserved at least 2 supporting noms too: David Strathairn and Judy Parfitt. In Judy's case, I think she also could have rightfully won for a magnificent performance in a juicy, complex supporting role. (Oh shoot - I got myself started! :)
I think this is the Decade where she branched out to show us more range in different genres (comedy, action, and her musical prowess). Thus, when it comes to this decade I'm more impressed with that than her Oscar nominations.
Starting from the 90d, Meryl Streep was acting as a role that recollects the past or as a senior citizen. Both are themes of Saturn. Here is Saturn's Community Fire Lab. ru-vid.comkYhsxxQxMM0?si=bcaUUej6cdm4DhFz
“Overrated” is a specious, insignificant term. It’s when a minority thinks it can supersede the majority. Completely illogical. You’re only called overrated when you’re overwhelmingly and undeniably highly regarded by the majority. So Meryl Steep and her fans thank you for the compliment.
