On May 1, 2008, when Swedens technical metal giants Meshuggah came to New York on Ministrys C-U-La-Tour, guitarists Fredrik Thordendal and Marten Hagstrom (above left and right, respectively) stopped by MetalKults Manhattan headquarters for a video interview and riff lesson.
Meshuggah were also touring in support of their latest album, Obzen, which was released on March 11 on Nuclear Blast.
In this rare footage, the guitarists talk about their eight-string guitars, extraterrestrial solos, challenging polyrhythms, and time-signature misconceptions, before demonstrating how to play some classic riffs from their catalog, including Rational Gaze, Bleed, Electric Red, Pravus, New Millenium Cyanide Christ, The Mouth Licking What Youve Bled and Future Breed Machine.
Check out all this death-tech goodness below!

To speak honestly, if to blame Meshuggah for peacockery that 2 strings are enough for playing Meshuggah rather than 8, then it would be fair to blame thousands of other popular bands who really don't play more than 2-3 strings on their 6-strings. Technique is something very subjective, personally I find polyrhythmic leads by Fredrick very technical, and I cannot say any guy from Meshuggah is a technical mediocrity.

I aspire to be able to play rhythm guitar like Fredrik. I've always been attracted to "odd" sounding music. I grew up with Korn (not their later shit, I'm talking first album) and Tool. It was easy for me to get into Meshuggah because they have exactly what I look for in metal; rhythmically focused music that has an unusual feel and approach.

Dear Sir, I can assure you Fredrick uses all of his strings while doing his incredible lead work. I also would like to recommend you Fredrick Thordendal Special Defects side-project. Solos it contains have completely blown me away - that proves at least Fredrick understands and uses potential of every string in his 7 and 8-string guitars. It is just a matter of Meshuggah's music - using of the lowest strings most frequently.

The way they play is so organic. Playing guitar from a traditional stand point is so restrictive to me. I'm tired of 4/4 and scale and pentatonic therory as being the only way to write something. Meshuggah go outside of all that. I've been trying to play this style but it's very difficult to master but I have to keep learning from Meshuggah and people on You Tube. Also lift weights to build up my forearms because "Bleed" will kill you after a while, lol.

@saintlotus93
@saintlotus93 12 лет назад
I had a lot of trouble with it too, but I realized most of my trouble was because I would stiffen up when played it. I had to practice really slow, that way my wrist and arm would be more relaxed and loose, when I played it full speed. It also smoothed out when I changed my pick to a dunlop jazz 3, they glide over the strings a lot easier, for me.
@thinkpad20

Holdsworth doesn't read music, but he definitely knows his theory. Coltrane, Davis, Monk, Bach, Beethoven, Debussy, Ravel..... would you call these people uncreative? They all knew their theory backwards and forwards. Having theory knowledge gives you a tool to use in music creation; it doesn't take anything away. Knowing rules doesn't prevent you from breaking them. :) Not to mention there are many forms of music theory - classical, jazz, modern, Hindustani, etc. There is no one "music theory."

theres no groove in the bands youve mentioned....meshuggah may stick to the real low notes...and i can understand some people finding it a bit repetitive at times...but for me....what makes them the heaviest band of all time is their groove....cryptopsy is def awesome...and technically its impressive but sometimes death metal just sounds silly to me

I've never said that theory is useless, at the contrary, but sometimes, or better, the most of times who study music is not really free or able to write non-considering the penthagram, self-thaught people are a different approach to songwriting, haveto use yuour head to find a way to do what you want, sometimes autodidact find something new, that noone have never thought, so...

@666spawnofsatan666 - it is and it's not. On Nothing,Obzen, and a few albums before those, they use a system. If you can learn how to nod your head to the beat, that's a major accomplishment. Go from there to learn the riffs. The verse riff to Rational Gaze is not too hard. It has a starting point, and an ending point. They totally use cycles, and their music is arranged into sections. Otherwize, they wouldn't be able to play it live - which is mind blowing to see.

the whole point of the 8 string is so they can play bass. Like he said its a rhythmic exercise, and u need the next 4 at least for pwr chord. I imagine there is sum sort of need for all strings to help hold tension and tones up the neck maybe??? Maybe it's just annoying to sit on the couch and not be able to dick around wit higher strings, thats more likely the answer:) they seem pretty blaze about playn

It could be compared with someone who is ridiculously good and experienced at playing Tekken, and is beaten in a match against a complete newbie who just mashed a load of buttons. Typically people who are truly immersed in music theory may be cautious to write, or might even use a robotic process for writing a piece, because they've seen it all done before. I think the real geniuses are those who are experimental with theory and who manage to fuse styles that are a polar opposite from each other
