On May 1, 2008, when Swedens technical metal giants Meshuggah came to New York on Ministrys C-U-La-Tour, guitarists Fredrik Thordendal and Marten Hagstrom (above left and right, respectively) stopped by MetalKults Manhattan headquarters for a video interview and riff lesson.
Meshuggah were also touring in support of their latest album, Obzen, which was released on March 11 on Nuclear Blast.
In this rare footage, the guitarists talk about their eight-string guitars, extraterrestrial solos, challenging polyrhythms, and time-signature misconceptions, before demonstrating how to play some classic riffs from their catalog, including Rational Gaze, Bleed, Electric Red, Pravus, New Millenium Cyanide Christ, The Mouth Licking What Youve Bled and Future Breed Machine.
Check out all this death-tech goodness below!

I like how the views scale down from 500k to 332k to 146k for part 3, because people realise over the course of the videos they still have no idea how to do it like meshuggah.

Concatenation is the perfect example of when things are too fast and the details are lost. The slower version on Rare Trax is crushing.
@holygroove2
@holygroove2 7 лет назад
Yes, but the fast version is mind blowing. I personally am glad that both versions exist because no one would believe that the version on Chaosphere is all in 4. The whole freaking song is in 4, and the slow version proves this. That's why I can't do without either version.

The problem is not that the song is too fast, the problem is that your ears sucks.

Love how they show what they do without a technical explaination. They come at it from an artistic veiwpoint, talking about the sounds, and grooves rather than the math involved. It's really important to have them on here correcting mistakes that people have made while transcribing their music! If I played guitar I'd want to know what they actually laid down.

Always something to learn - the chromaticism in New Millennium Cyanide Christ is something I didn't hear in on Chaosphere at all. I thought the first parts of that riff were all one note! Wow!
@holygroove2
@holygroove2 12 лет назад
Now that I am familiar with most of their music, these lessons are really great. I actually hear the Pravus details that he's talking about from the CD...I'll have to check out the Alive DVD to see if what he's saying is true. Sometimes it may not be heard, but it's still felt. These little details make them who they are.

I feel so bad for him when he says his rhetoric about why they write things if no one hears it XD he almost sounds so crushed. little character quirks in songs like that are my favorite part of them, and it even bothers me when my friends don't hear them cause they don't listen attentively.
@holygroove2
@holygroove2 7 лет назад
Be patient with your friends, and be glad for your ears. The fact that the two guitarists had and interview about this issue means that MANY people don't hear what you can hear, you are rare. There are still riffs that throw me off with this band, and I LOVE being thrown off while simultaneously knowing that it's all in 4. I wouldn't say that he's "crushed". I think he takes pride in what the band produces.
@jimzeez
@jimzeez 7 лет назад
I've no doubt they're very proud. It just came off as funny as first haha. As far as (some of) my friends go, they aren't all as interested in music as I am so they don't listen as attentively. To be expected.
@holygroove2
@holygroove2 7 лет назад
Yes, to be expected. You bring up something that I didn't think about - you're sort of saying that the character of the musicians actually shows up in their sound. That's an interesting thought with Meshuggah for sure.

Yes. The last item in the list (followed by a smiley) is what gave the comment a light-hearted touch. I'm sure you know how people say that tone comes from your fingers. So the last part was simply acknowledging that Meshuggah are quite talented and rather unique, so that even with the exact same equipment it would be hard to sound like them. And of course it was exaggerated to say that their skill is inhuman as they are quite obviously human.

The only reason I replied in the first place was because there was an apparent chance that you actually thought that their skill was unachievable; as such, I wanted to be certain that you knew that that was not the case at all. I wanted to implore you to believing the fact that you can reasonably achieve that which they have done. Go forth, bearer of light.
@holygroove2
@holygroove2 13 лет назад
@thegr8HarV - I think they purposely use simple 3 or 4 note fragments. The notes trick the ear into thinking that they're using some weird meter, when they really aren't. There are a many songs where the notes they use are important - check out Closed Eye Visuals and Rational Gaze. I think they are all around the best. Go back and listen to Contradictions Collapse, and Destroy Erase Improve. They've covered a TON of ground already.
