Let me just say this. As a son who's dad told him he gave up riding because of us as kids, I felt guilty. I got into motorcycles before I even knew he used to ride. A few years after I became an adult and got into riding, he bought a Goldwing because we told him it was okay. He doesnt ride it as much as he may like, but Im glad he got back into it, even if just a little. I wish he'd have never given it up.

That’s awesome that he found his passion again. Even more awesome that y’all can share it together.

My daughter is in college now. Many of the best memories I have with my daughter are trips on the motorcycle. She has ridden with me since she was 6.

I stopped riding when my kids were young, not because my wife was against it, until I could afford good life insurance. Then I/we started riding again, but I have never ridden intoxicated and I try to ride safe and keep improving my slow speed skills through practicing in parking lots. Of course I wanted to be around to see my kids and grandkids grow up, but I also needed something to maintain my mental health. I have other hobbies like camping, fishing and floating that I have shared with my kids and grandkids. They all, with the exception of one grandson, like to ride with me or my son. My grandson has had it drilled into him, by his mother, that motorcycles are nothing more than death machines. Hopefully one day I will be able to get him on the back, but I think a part of his fear is a lack of control. He was in a car accident when he was 7 and that has made him nervous about anything he's not in control of. I did impress upon my son that good life insurance is a parents responsibility and that the children should be beneficiaries, not just their mother, because you never know what that person may do when you're gone. Anyway, that's my $0.02.

I completely agree with what you said. Take responsibility, manage risk, and be that role model. All you can do.

The way I look at it is, I am my kids father. If I lose who I am because I had them, then am I really even their father, or am I being what I thought a father should be? I choose to raise my kids as myself and not a crafted image of what I think is safe. I try to teach them to think for themselves and understand how things work so that they can see things as I do.

Your most authentic self is who you really are. Does that make sense?

My Dad's passion was flying (trained at the end of WW2 but didn't see combat). He had a single engine plane when I was a kid. He stopped flying when I was around 12, likely for financial reasons. But for 55 years he never flew again and just sat around watching TV into his 80's. Dr prescribed "depression" and gave him pills. I have always ridden motorcycles, and always will. You just hope something else kills you first - but no one makes it out alive (with a body anyway). As a spiritual being we are immortal, and motorcycles can bring you closer to feeling like a free spirit because that is what you are.

Absolutely. I think that’s what scares me the most, being at the end of my life and looking back at my accomplishments and deeds…and feeling regret. Thanks for your comment!

All men should have three things in his life. A church, a tribe and a hobby. I ride motorcycles as one of my hobbies. I love just going out and exploring the countryside around where I live. I have yet to find a group that is more of my speed to ride with. Hobbies like motorcycling allows one to focus on things that help maintain our mind and spirit and keeps us away from distractions and paths that we should not go down. I guess that is the therapy side of things. I am lucky, my wife has always been supportive of my MC riding. If your wife really insists that you should quit, then maybe you should quit. Just understand when a spouse forces you to do something that you enjoy and is not anything inherently bad can lead to a some discontent. Be aware of this and move past it. Maybe some day you will reach a point where you can get back to your hobby. Another example is when a husband loves to hunt and the wife for some(useally selfless) reason forces him to quit. You know the guy is miserable and suppressing contempt for his wife.

“Hobbies like motorcycling allows one to focus on things that help maintain our mind and spirit and keeps us away from distractions and paths that we should not go down.” I couldn’t agree more! Usually the outcome is much worse when people don’t have a creative outlet.
