No joke when the hooded chainsaw guy appeared I thought "Hey, that's kinda like resident evil" before remembering I was watching a resident evil series. It's so detached from the games I'd literally forgotten it wasn't just another zombie series
It's why I couldn't say anything about the race change to Wesker. It was so beyond Resident Evil that they could have named him Alfred Ashford and it wouldn't have made any difference. Come to think of it, Alfred would have been more accurate due to the twins thing.
It reminds me of when shooting the Marx Brother's movies (the brother notoriously improved entire scenes without reading the script) the director once jumped up and shouted 'I RECOGNIZED ONE OF MY LINES!'
Why. Can't. They. Just. Adapt. The. First. Fucking. Game??? It'd make for great episodic TV. Get to know the S.T.A.R.S. team a bit, watch them train and bond as a unit would. They get the call, go to investigate, get stranded at the mansion. Dogs attack set piece, great way to finish the first episode. Then we gradually work our way through the game's plot, following Jill and Chris on separate paths through the mansion, making discoveries, dealing with traps and puzzles (could even expand this into a more escape room type thing if you wanted to modernise it a little), encountering new creatures left and right etc. It'd work really well, why is it so damn hard for them to do? Could even have little flashbacks as they find journal entries and the like, showing shit like the poor animal Keeper being infected and going mad. There's so much to work with.
Even for a standalone movie rather than a series all you need to do is adapt the Jill and Barry side and you have a perfectly good cast of characters that interact well and sufficient plot to fill out a decent runtime.

I finished watching it this morning, It was so hard to get through it's so boring. I mean there's an entire episode of the girls crawling around their house looking for hidden compartments . So much padding. And can we PLEASE get off the whole Umbrella Corp story now? The games moved on from it 20 years ago. Resi today is all about werewolves and 9ft tall sexy vampire women, even Umbrella's replacement is long gone in the story arc.

We ain't leaving Umbrella until the amount of good games without them rivals the amount of good games with them.
I feel very sorry for Resident Evil fans. They want to see their favorite moments from the games into live action, but these writers make crap up as they went along, bastardizing everything that made the games so beloved.
This had to have been someone's teen drama with zombies that they just slapped the Resident Evil name on to get approved, I absolutely refuse to believe it was intended to be this way from the beginning.
@@ericcaulfield4477 Unlike other adaptation teams, it seemed like the makers of Welcome to Raccoon City at least had affection for RE, but they lacked the skill and budget to do it justice.
The show itself was fairly lacklustre, but Bert was definitely a highlight. He actually felt like a guy just enjoying life when he got to actually go outside and meet his "daughters", and it was kind of refreshing.
Capcom keeps licensing the series to talentless hacks and never lets any people who care about it work on it seems whenever live action adaptations are involved. It's rather sad when Ace Attorney is the only one that had a passable adaptation
Feels like someone pitched a 28 Months Later series that was sprinkled with Resident Evil references when Capcom surprisingly gave green light for Netflix. Netflix also probably just threw clones in just to annoy Phelous.
Feels like a CW show that got a bigger budget. Hard pass. Just gonna sit back and wait to see if RE4 Reimaginged is another rip off like RE3 2020 or great like RE2 2019.
I just don't understand why Reddick's character is Wesker. How does it improve the story in any way making him Wesker when he's going to act like an entirely different character during the whole thing? If they wanted a family man, why not Birkin? He would have fit the part better. He could be working to try to undo the mistakes of his past and maybe even ocassionally getting news of Sherry, considering the possibility of trying to reconnect with her as well as maintaining his new family. Hell, you could do away with the whole clone thing even, just establishing the idea that the explosion in the train destroyed most of his body but also kept him alive and reversed the mutation, but now he needs a periodic blood injection from his daughters to stop it from advancing again. Then you establish a new danger to hang over the characters: Birkin won't just die if he doesn't get the blood, he will again mutate into an unstoppable monster.
It's simple, The show runners can't do anything right and they needed to find a way for them to push their agenda so they took a popular franchise and slapped a name on a bland run of the mill character and that's it.

I'm impressed by how much creators continue failing to adapt Resident Evil. It's like they took our complaints about the Paul Anderson films being bad as a challenge to write something even worse. Lastly I hope Lance Reddick got a good paycheck, he's the one character who was worth watching. At least we got a laugh out of him dressed up like Blade.
We live in a year that had a Halo Show, and Resident Evil show, and a Sonic movie sequel, and somehow the family film about a flossing teenage hedgehog fighting a flossing Jim Carrey is the more accurate and respected video game adaptation of the year. Try explaining this to yourself from 5 years ago.
Should have made the main lead Birkin if they wanted to follow the “special” daughter cliche. Sherry and her sister; her father struggling to be a good father while dabbling in creating viruses, and then the viruses get released. I just can’t imagine a Wesker that…cares…

@@darthkai8242 Yeah the casting for Iron Fist was mostly good. Colleen's casting originated from there too and she's great. Finn was better in later stuff. They updated Ward and Harold in an interesting way (better than Diamondback's interpretation anyway). It was really the plot and the choreography/time given to practice choreography that was the problem there. And each season had an actual plot. Here it sounds like they just want to stretch it out forever with bland Netflix generic teen protagonists

Fun fact: there was a genuinely good Resident Evil script written by the late George Romero himself, but it got scrapped in favor of the Alice saga. It's still available online, and it'll make you wish they'd gone with that instead of what we keep getting
This whole show feels like someone trying to AVOID representing Resident Evil. Zombies created by a mutating virus/precambrian lifeforms? NOPE! They're made by anti-depressants! The iconic Raccoon City incident? THAT'S ALREADY OVER BEFORE THE SHOW STARTS! Any characters looking like or acting like the characters in the game? NOPE. These people if they have any association with the characters names in the game don't do anything to look like them or sound like them or act like them! This was so much money completely wasted on NOT being what it claimed to be...
Also, a pharmaceutical naming its anti-depressant "Joy." That was done for dark comedy in We Happy Few, but we're meant to take Umbrella as a serious company - before all the BOW stuff - while their biggest product sounds like a troll to people with depression.
I'm convinced that this series was the showrunner's pre-existing zombie drama pitch that he scribbled Resident Evil into the margins in order to garner funding with the promise of a pre-existing audience...
At the time of me typing this, Lance Reddick (who played Wesker) passed away yesterday. Tremendous actor that always gave his A+ material in anything he was in - even if it was shit. He will be missed.

The first game would adapt VERY well in terms of structure. Welcome to Racoon City trying to cram both plots in rather than picking one or the other was that film's issue.
1) Since the show ended up getting cancelled, I just deleted this comment that I had made over 7 months ago: A sequel to "Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City" is more likely to happen than a second season of "Resident Evil". The fact that whoever is working on this is a producer who was proud of how long Supernatural went on does not bode well. Not as scary as it should be? Meandering and not having great plot twists? Emotionally inconsistent? That all sounds like the later seasons of Supernatural
All I've ever heard abotu Supernatural was that its story sucked, and the only reason anyone stuck around was for shipping purposes with all its sexy handsome dude actors. It's not the most positive image of a show if the only thing anyone cared about was the shipping wars.
That is very ominous. Supernatural went on far too long. The moment they brought angels in it died. Before it was one off stories with one over arching story. After. It never went anywhere. It moved at the pace of a snail on valium. The same rubbish over and over and over. It should have stopped when the angels came in.

The thing that made Supernatural good was the cast and crew. They had great chemistry, and were very cool people irl. It was also the only show where a monster of the week episode was actually something to look forward to.

The "Barry" zombie chained to a pipe in a bathroom is a perfect visual metaphor for what this show did to the source material. It's a dying husk of the story that barely resembles the original.
It's obvious to me this was some original horror property they were developing until they got the distribution for Welcome to Raccoon City, so they took this series and slapped the name Resident Evil onto it, put in some of the monsters, Umbrella and named one of the characters after one of the villains from the game. Like, why else would they focus the show on Albert Wesker's (oc, do not steal) daughters? Why create characters that have no basis in the source material when you have a long list of beloved characters fans want to see more of?
And the zombie apocolypse is what kind of turned me off from this show in the first place and had me rolling my eyes. What I love most about the games was that it felt different than most of the other "Zombies win, all humans die, put metaphor here" films I had watched. It was all about you facing down some zombies and other monsters and kicking their asses. By putting in an "End of the world" scenario, it stops being resident evil to me and starts being another run of the mill zombie flick. Then I read the rest of the plot and all I could think of was, 'How does this sound anything like Resident Evil.' Wich is something I think you should never ask when you see an adaptation. Its funny...Sonic gets mocked in the games, but those movies are more like Sonic than these. I look forward to the Street Fighter movie about M. Bison going on an RV trip with his kid sister, Darkstalkers about a young boy meeting the ca...oh wait let me change that. Mega Man about a young boy who can turn into meg-oh wait...Ghouls and Ghosts movie about an ex-marine saving his girlfriend, and a Phenox wright film about him being a noir detective looking for Maya.
Uh, it's pretty funny that the RE games never actually did a zombie apocalypse given that it's one of parts of the franchise you would think they would have done it by now. Guess Capcom has some restraint when it comes to that, at least when it comes to RE.

The state of live action Resi Evil adaptations is beyond embarrassing at this point. Like you said in your Racoon City review, it should be one of the easiest properties to adapt, and yet the people in charge insist on making rods for their own back. When they're not actively ignoring the source material, thereby instantly turning off the intended audience (unless the fans aren't the intended audience, in which case why call it Resident Evil!?), they're adapting 2 games at once, and STILL ignoring a bunch of source material. Just adapt the bloody game! It can't be that hard!
Between the clones, the visual language for the Umbrella Corporation labs/facilities, and the post-apocalypse shit, it's super clear that the writers of this show probably didn't even know Resident Evil was a series of video games at all, and were instead informed 100% by the Paul Anderson movies.... which is just _the worst thought,_ that _that_ could happen. There are writers out there who grew up knowing ONLY _his version_ of "Resident Evil." I mean, yeah, at some point, someone sort of made one pass at the script to inject a teeny, tiny bits of sort-of game references in there, but nah. It's 100% obvious that the terrible writers didn't know Resident Evil is a series of video games, and only knew the Milla Jovovich movies.
I really wouldn’t have minded if this series was done as a side story to the Anderson movies. It’s a similar post apocalyptic setting, takes place in UK while the movies take place in America, just have Marcus and Wesker be all new characters, head scientists at New Raccoon City prior to the global virus spread
I can sum up my feelings similar to Cowboy Bebop: sprinkled with good ideas I want to see explored, but completely drowned out by terrible writing and characters. And the show runner saying he wants to make 15 seasons reminds me of the writer of Bebop saying “fuck, man, you guys are missing out on what was to come in season 2.” You don’t save your good stuff for later seasons! You need to show the goods in the first season and then use that as a base line to improve upon in further seasons!
I'm just gonna assume they had nothing good in season 2 because the first season was so trash except for Jet as that was the only character that was like the original
Judging from the final scene in the show mentioning the "butterfly man," season 2 was going to loosely adapt the movie. Considering how they adapted the other episodes, the whole subplot with Julia going off the rails and how they'd probably be stretching a feature length movie over the course of several hours, I don't think we would have missed out on squat.

What is it with video game adaptations not trusting their source material? What is so hard about just adapting one game and retaining the relevant plot beats while removing a bunch of the gameplay centric elements? Why do you we have to screw around with the established formula just to fit a preconcieved notion of what audiences want? They did this with the Halo TV series to equally dismal results. All you have to do is just pick a character from the game and follow THEIR story. That's all any of these Resident Evil adaptations have to do and they just outright refuse because it seems they'd rather do their own thing. That they're just using the marque value of a hot property to tell a story they've made up and they're retrofitting it onto the IP. And it makes me wonder how much they actually care or trust in that franchise's own story if they're just using it for clout.
I heard that Lance Reddick based his performance on Shawn Roberts' Wesker from the Alice movies since he didn't know that Resident Evil was originally a video game series. Also, the showrunner promised in another interview that he would add every RE character to the series if it continued, especially Lady Dimitrescu and the Village from RE8 (yes really). Yeah, good luck with that, pal !
I've heard of not knowing the source material, but not knowing resident evil was video game is insane. like one google of "resident evil" would tell you at least that much.

@@jamesduncan6729 That's the thing though : the showrunner KNEW about Resident Evil and proudly claimed that RE1 through 5 are explicitly canon in this universe. And yet, he STILL couldn't adapt it properly.
Suspect this was a zombie series that was being shopped around and they were able to get ahold of the RE IP sell it to Netflix. The RE IP seems petty lax with who uses it. That'd explain why the focus is on storylines, characters, and themes unrelated to the game series. Wesker was likely another character entirely that they slapped the name on - a reason they might feel so underbaked.
It definitely feels like a generic YA zombie fanfic make by a wine soaked woman in her twenties. I wouldn’t be surprised if they just slapped the RE name on it and called it a day.
I can't wait for Netflix to make a Silent Hill series where the only character from the games is Vincent who looks and acts nothing like Vincent, it ends with a canon UFO ending and the hook for season 2 is that the aliens create an entire army of Pyramid Heads to take over Earth.
Besides the misuse, my only recrimination about Reddick is that they made him look like too much as Blade, instead of having a more eccentric costume design. It's way too uninspired to make him all clad in all black, too "I am so matrix, am I not cool" cliched. They were into something with him, that's the most I can say. He should have been more like Simon Phoenix, less like Blade.

I had heard the show was bad. I kept putting off watching it, and just when I had decided to give up on it, I remembered Phelan. For those of you who are new to the channel , let me say this, Phelan knows Residint Evil better than anyone I've seen on RU-vid. And his passion for the series is what makes me so sad that Capcom's media division can't figure out something that seems so simple to us! I'm a super fan of almost all of the games (even gun survivor 1 ;) and I have seen most other content so I figured, if Phelan could find something wothwile in this, then I could stop the review, go watch the series and "enjoy" it for myself. Well, I'm at the closing stinger and Just wanted to say thank you to Phelan. He watches this crap so we don't have to. :) I don't know if you have a special, genetic abnormality that allows you to get though this. The thing that's so weird to me is if they wanted a doting father character mixed up in shady corporate business, why not just make the show about Barry instead?
Lance Reddick would make a great accurate Wesker! He does such intimidating villains! But this character doesnt feel like Wesker *at all.* Part of the fun of Wesker is that he is so clearly up to something. He could barely pass as a S.T.A.R.s leader; I just cannot imagine him trying to pretend to be a parent! He loves nothing but power and himself, and I don't think he could ever fake actually caring for someone.
and let's be real even if he did it he would have the mannerisms of well a supervillian hell you could have with his narcissism bleed over so he cares I mean hell he cares about the t-virus and well it already served him so there's fun to be had there but yeah this shows gets everything wrong about him literally nothing is right

Purposefully awkward "wait, what?" "wow, that's so weird!" smalltalk dialogue, overly smug, snappy characters, tonally destructive comedy and pointless pop culture references are the four horsemen of the apocalypse.
It’s just… what’s so hard to make a thriller in a zombie infested mansion? We got traps straight out of Saw, Zombies straight of the Romero handbook, and monsters from creature features. It’s like a perfect storm of a creepy movie that gradually ranks up into a rollercoaster of a nightmare scenario. Of course the modern idea of making everything prepped for a franchise doesn’t help. How studios feel the need to just cram as many little easter eggs and clues to future stories instead of focusing on the current one.
The only halfway decent zombie fight sequence wasn't even done by the protagonist - the comic relief villain dispatches the zombies like he's Chris and Leon combined, while Jade runs away. He also saves her life, but when it is time for her to save him? Oh, he is too heavy, so she drops him into the remaining horde (never mind that the show spent hours insisting that she was "badass who can do anything")
I just love that this show made everyone from all sides look at the Paul W.S. Anderson movies and basically go *Thanos voice* "Perhaps I Treated You Too Harshly". When I saw clips on twitter, I couldn't believe that it was real.
Oh Resident Alice can go blow itself too, it's a continuity nightmare that also has very little with did with Resident Evil in the end. I can give it that it didn't drag like this series but I'll never say it was judged too harshly. It wasted our time for 14 years. (12 if you want to count the 1st movie as being ok)
@@phelous I have mixed feelings for the first one, only because it was one of the first zombie movies I ever saw when I was 12. But I'm not gonna lie, it's not good. At best you can say that it's maybe a guilty pleasure. When I watched... whatever the hell Retribution and The Final Chapter were, I was like "Ok, even if these weren't the last two, you can't possibly make something worse Resident Evil related..." I was wrong... Oh boy I was wrong....
I don't get why people making these adaptations snub the games so hard - yeah it's a bit goofy due to the dialogue but you got so much potentional there. Make a season 1 about the first game, introduce the stars members and their relationships in the first episode. So we see that Chris really trusted Wesker and feels super duper betrayed by him. Then show them getting split as they make their way to the mansion. Spend a bit more time with the other characters who die or get hurt and then find a way to mix in both Christ and Jill doing stuff, have Barry pop in to help maybe show more of his side plot ... Voilà extremly good story set up, the outline is there and by mixing it up and giving everything a bit more depth it justifies the adaption. Not to mention a claustrophobic setting with a house and few zombies, hunters, sharks etc ... that would make for some great tension and it probably wouldn't be super duper expensive, like CGI dragons ;) I know it's probably never going to happen but a girl can dream ...
so i heard yesterday that main actor (the guy who plays Wesker here) died recently....and the only reason i recognised his face is because of this review😢 But um i am grateful you introduced me to him even if it was for a brief time. I don't get live action adaptions obsession with turning Umbrella into a super powerful megecorp that can stick around in a post-apocalyptic world! Umbrella weren't even around that long in the games! They got taken down after 3: Nemesis and since then it's just been different groups messing with virus monsters and such! Sure there's Blue Umbrella that's recently surfaced but still! And what's with a post-apocalyptic setting anyway? The games are always about stopping the menace BEFORE it spreads across the globe!! We can't just have an enjoyable show about S.T.A.R.S. or BSAA thwarting schemes of bio-terrorism?!
Or hey, how about a police debriefing where a skeptical Chief or higher has to go though the "Biohazard" tape, tells Jill & Barry he thinks they'd have been full of it, but then drops a little aside about the "Sweet Home:1989" incident in Japan; have Barry say something along the lines, "I honestly think the Resident was Evil", cue the eyerolling of a million nerds. "Lickers, you called them?" And it turns out the whole reason these tapes were being played out was because there's credible evidence towards a Biohazard incident occurring within Raccoon City.
Its nuts that Pokemon and Sonic has done better than RE in live action. I mean Pokemon has basically magical creatures who can be captured in balls and duke it out and Sonic has a walking talking Hedgehog. Yet the property that basically has Humans running around a spooky mansion solving puzzles and shooting monsters is to hard to get.
You know watching the performance that Lance Reddick gives for his main version of Wesker I think he would have been far better for William Berkin. At least if he is going for, (or is being directed to go for, I haven't looked into anything behind the scenes yet) "tired and yet dangerous family man/scientists whose children have issues with him". That is assuming that kept the G-Virus storyline. Casting doesn't seem to be an issue here, just writing and production. If they are going to cast him as Wesker I'd prefer him as Wesker prime most of the time as a serious/traitorous twist villain and clones are used only occasionally.

I think it's safe to say that Resident Evil is the one video game that's forever stuck in the Shitty Video Game Adaptation Curse while Sonic The Hedgehog already broke it.
They kind of did Scott Lewis cosindering their some of the highest grossing video game movies, received several glowing reviews, have been praised by channels that primarily focus on sonic as a franchise, and have even had a handful of videos talking about how they enjoy the movie iterations of these characters. You really can't say that for most video game movies.
@@scottylewis8124 cheap is a pretty shallow statement cosindering how much money went in to them, and the fact that companies who have worked on the animation for the games worked on the movies. Also if you haven't really watched them you can't really make any solid judgments about them.
@@fightingmedialounge519 that's the point.. I can't watch them because of how they treated my childhood. I'm sick of my childhood being crapped on. If Hollywood can't get my childhood right, then what's the point? I'm done with movies treating my childhood games like crap.
I will admit, that I know very little about the Resident Evil series and all the stuff in it, but this is the third series/adaptation of Resident Evil and they still mess it up, like how do you do that? Zombies and other creatures in a mansion and reveal twists and secrets throughout the exploration of it, it worked in 1996, it should work now
I was literally screaming at the TV when Umbrella had zero security guards at their ultra secret evil lab. Another thing I disliked was how the Jade character literally survived every damn thing that would killed her ten times over. I was expecting it to turn out she was like super soldier Alice eventually. To me the actor who player the Weskers was probably the best part of the show overall. I also found it weird the croc monster did not bother the daughter but she was chased by the zero. They did hint at Ada Wong in the end for "next season". My main issue is the show was like a 1.5 hour movie put into over 8 hours of run time. If they were going to be so slow and plodding, i think they should have done like you said and made it a more creepy show like the original game was.
The funny thing with the little girl and the giant crocodile was that the croc becoming all docile made it weirdly cute. If someone has made a giant BOW "cute," then they've really f**ked up badly.
Thats pretty much all they've done, "hinted" at things for following seasons. Like anybody is going to fall for that, especially after season 1 was so disappointing.
