I love Elle's feminility and kindness, she is a sweet person. When I saw her look, it took my breath away, she looked like a glass flower from an ethereal world. I agree with you about her hair and makeup, she could have put a huge thing like Lana Del Rey and then all would have come unbeatable. But I still think she did not disappoint. Thank you for your video, as always.
I appreciate that she didn't take the easy route and reference garden florals like most people at the Met Gala, especially since she has done so before. The 'Garden of Time' refers to a story by J. G. Ballard where there are crystal roses that can extend time, along with a lake. Without knowing Elle's reference, we could be excused to think that, that it is where she drew her inspiration from. The story delves into class system, time, death, and decay, with the latter tying into the "Sleeping Beauties" theme of the exhibition. The birds and texture of the dress also fulfil some of the ingenue and ethereal requirements. I find that most celebrities don't put in the effort to understand the references behind the theme, which makes their outfits boring to me. I think Chloe Sevigny did a great job with the theme. Whether or not she looked pretty is another matter, but for me, I'm more interested in how the outfits convey the wearer's study and understanding of the theme and references.
I agree 100%. I think she had a well thought out look that managed to be unique and stand out from an endless sea of florals. And she looked beautiful. I also agree with you on Chloe, HauteLeMode had a Met Gala review series and had great commentary on her look- definitely a great interpretation and execution of the theme. And your point is the crux of it- if we're just looking at the fashion of it, that's a different criteria and I too like for the looks to be on theme and interesting, even if they aren't necessarily the prettiest. However, the nature of what I evaluate (body type and style essence harmony) means that I am looking for an additional layer of harmony between the outfit and the wearer. In elle's case, she was on theme and she looked harmonious so I know I'm being greedy in wanting her to do more... but it was just the moment😩 and from her (and JUST her) I wanted all the florals lol! But I can and do appreciate the daring of the fashion because, as you point out, most celebrities are lazy and put too much of the emphasis on being "pretty" which I feel is such a wasted opportunity for the Met Gala.
I wasn't sure how I felt about it at the time, and I get annoyed by see-through dresses in general. But then I was thinking it looked almost like water and it was kind of cool. BUT, your point about playing to her essence is so true! I guess I don't give it that much thought, but she IS fun to see when she dresses to her ingenue (and ethereal) powers and I really enjoyed the little trip down memory lane of all her beautiful looks!
This Balmain gown demands to be presented as an exquisite piece of crystal, and it's a credit to Elle's rare combination of beauty and poise that she can embody this illusion. The gown is a perfect choice for the Met Gala theme, but such a gown always insists on wearing the person...perhaps this is what bothered us at first? I was wondering what it is about the video that kind of didn't sit well with me. I know this is about Ingenue essence, about what makes them shine, about how this could have been a 'missed opportunity' to showcase the Ingenue essence to the next level or to the extreme yin that it is. Now that I think about it, I think it's because we already know what a Prime Ingenue / Prime Ingenue-Ethereal looks, and we've already seen it on Elle Fanning. I see other style influencers and content creators go like, "these are examples of [this] essence, but of course you can find your personal, /authentic/ way of expressing it! Ethereal doesn't always just look like X, you can put your own twist and make it X+You." She chose to wear this, therefore it is still part of her style. While I appreciate this video, and you do put the disclaimer that this is your opinion only, the messaging feels like putting back this Ingenue-Ethereal person back into the stereotypical box of what "Ingenue-Ethereal" looks like. I appreciate this dress because it looks different on her. I appreciate that it shows a different way for an Ingenue-Ethereal person to look, and we honestly need more of that content than the usual examples we can easily find on 100+ pinterest boards.
Agree a lot with your comment, ingenue and ethereal essence can be expressed in many ways but influencers do like to push the stereotype that " ingenue wears clothes with and pink flowers and ethereals wear wedding gouns with with shine facbric" when in reality,ingenue essence and ethereal essence can be mixed with many others essences and creat a style that really reflects what you want to communicate.
I really appreciate these ingenue essence analysis videos! They have been so helpful in figuring out how to embody this essence. You made a very interesting point about simple, plain clothes looking boring and lifeless. I totally agree, I think a big part of this essence is cute details.
This dress still suits her very well because it leans into her ethereal essence. A warmer colour might have been better. The birds are kind of an ingenue detail, aren't they?
The dress absolutely suits her. I found the birds to be slightly more Ethereal in essence because they evoke a sense of flight/ lightness; but if you imagine they're doves then it ties to purity which is the Ingenue. Either way, it works wonderfully for her. She looks wonderful- In this case, I know the problem is me lol
I actually hadn't thought of that reference- I think because she herself said she was referencing Sleeping Beauty- but now I can't not see Elsa in a gorgeous ice sculpture gown. In any case, I think she looks stunning, but for this theme I just wanted to see something different and that is all.
16:32 the 2 dresses on the midle look,the one with long corset dress and and sheer fabric is romantic, actualy,florals patterns arent exclusive for ingenues only. That pink dress is not ingenue neither,have ruffles and lightweight fabric but the vibe is not ingenue, they have a romantic feel rather than inocent feel,low neckline also add too. On Scarllet, maybe is not her best color,but is too heavy for ethereal or ingenue, so that doesnt feel youthfull or otherworldy,on Jennifer and Blake looks strange in those dresses 😮 on Margot looks like the dress is wearing her😮. 18:19 mmm I think it really depends person to person some lost the essence or change,some don't. That is fair- the title is a bit dramatic and I don't want the video to be negatively connotated because of it so perhaps revising it is wise. I'll give it a think and thank you for pointing that out. That said, I also think it's fair that you're perhaps engaging with the title a little too seriously? I 100% know she doesn't care about my opinion but that is not the point. This video (and this channel in general) is a space to discuss body type lines and style essences and to train our eye to see how that looks on different people....like Elle Fanning. That is all. ❤️
