But metabic acidosis and alkalosis is due to HCO3 changes know not with CO2.The way you simplified is correct but i think in case of metabolic acidosis the same change occurs with PH and HCO3
Yes that’s my recent understanding. Currently trying to get on top of this topic and although this mnemonic method is cool it doesn’t quite make sense to me. I too thought high or low levels of CO2 was respiratory only.

For R. Alkalosis you can use your index fingers, your right index will point up and it forms the L in aLkalosis, to better remember! Hope this helps someone.
