I don't think anybody can replace Lombardo. He's amazing and while Portnoy can play his parts, there's just something special about the way Dave plays them.
This is because only he can be him. Those tracks are engraved in our memories with his swing and agression on it, so, even if there are many way better skillled drummers, they will not be able to copy that swing from the records.
@@moveover76 I'm not the biggest Portnoy fan, but I guarantee he can play Angel of Death. Its not that fast for a modern drummer (~215 bpm 16ths on the fastest double bass runs). And Mike is plenty quick. Whether he can be as consistent and powerful as Lombardo is another story entirely, but Angel is not the most complex song in Slayer's catalog. Mike's work in DT has many examples of fast single strokes and double bass patterns. And, being the fanboy that he is, probably covered this song 100s of times growing up.
Kratos Uchiha they??? We all love metal and metalheads man do not try to divide , I love metallica and slayer seen them both in 90’s many times.. call me old but do not divide
@@oldmanuserphan no Dave does not EVER use triggers... I def know what triggers are as i have used them in the past and Dave is a flag bearer for the no triggers movement. He has always said a good sound man can get you that snap on your bass drums with good eq and mic placement. Listen to his bass drums dude they are barely even dampered. He like them as wide open and booming as possible. That sound is the exact OPPOSITE of the robotic sound of triggered drums. Are you a drummer? If so for how long? You should not generalize something like that. Real drummers get upset when you don't speak from knowledge.
I love Paul. Great drummer, teacher, musician. But this can't be denied - Dave, at his age, still plays like he's attacking the drumset. THE thrash drummer, never to be topped.
Q1. Are there 'better' and more technically proficient drummers out there? A1. Yes. Q2. Can any of them come close to absolute fucking savagery of Lombardo? A2. No.
Igor Cavalera (or however he spells Igor nowadays). Hardest hitting drummer I've ever seen. Eloy Casagrande (his replacement in Sepultura) also beats the living hell out of his kit.
@@blppt Being savage doesn't necessarily mean hitting hard. It's creating the appropriate brutal fills and playing energetically. Bostaph is very precise and is no slouch, but Dave's creativity and punkish aggression is unmatched. If anything, Slayer should've stuck with Jon Dette.
@@hugolafhugolaf I think Dave is the best fit and has the precision with speed and groove. Let's not forget he wrote the drum parts for their most legendary work.
i think one day all of daves bass drums are going to get together and start a class action law suit for the extreme physical abuse he has put them through
Dave lomardo is my generatons...Keith moon. Absolutely amazing 👏 I'm still in awe at how freaking great of a drummer he is. Unless you play the drums... you don't know or understand the song angel of death, the drummer carries the song. Wow !!!
@@blppt That's why I love an album like World Painted Blood. Sounds like Lombardo is playing right on the edge in some of the faster sections, and you can even hear him hitting different zones of the snare. It sounds alive to my ears.
@@jtjdrums You can hear Bostaph's imperfections too---notably his uneven double bass even on the studio albums, so its not patched to death like say, Hardwired, where Lars is 'playing' cleaner then he ever has in his life. Its pretty easy to tell when somethings been ProTooled/Quantized---it sounds too perfect for a human to have done it.
No Backwards cap, definitely not Dave Lombardo! Nah, but in all seriousness, great to see my favourite drummer still playing my favourite slayer song! Rock on Dave! also seeing Portnoy air-drumming in the background pretty much says it all! XDD
Now that’s what I’m talking about Dave Lombardo love that double bass part on Angel of Death, and Mike Portnoy found it hilarious in the background air drumming but hey The Godfather of double bass drums is the best 🤘🏻🤘🏻
Those guys all grew up worshipping Dave---I doubt Dave would have been nervous around them. Maybe if they were up on stage and Dave was watching them, they'd be nervous.
@ 01:26 Drumstick get's brocken and past away behind Dave !!! He takes a new one so fast that people did not see or hear that. His cymbal gets out for 3 seconds. Total Thrash Metal Drum Goat ! Mr. Dave Lombardo !!!
They had a shit business model, he pointed out they had a shit business model and wanted to find out how shit it really was. Kerry didn't want him to see just how shitty it really was so they kicked him out, that way they could carry on with the shit business model.... there's a lesson there regardless of what line of work you're in! ;)
I've seen this performance on many different channels ,from behind the drum riser, the left and now the right , it never ceases to amaze me at how natural Dave's playing ability is , if you are a musician and you watch Dave perform this ,if it doesn't impress you at his technical abilities ,speed and the power he hits and kicks this drums at then you know nothing of playing live , Dave lombardo is one of the main reason we now have super fast extreme metal drumming ,
You can tell that Dave still really enjoys playing these songs. Cool to get to see him play them without all the drama of Slayer-Lite starring Kerry Gene Simmons King & Tom Araya
Bostaph never had the speed or endurance with the kicks, NEVER. Saw bostaph with Slayer this past September and Paul had them sounding like a Slayer cover band playing in a garage...
Love how broke the stick threw to the back and grabbed the other stick without missing a beat at approx.1:28!! Dave is a beast and it was too bad he didn't get to play the last show with Slayer!!🤘🤘
@@omarrodriguez4237 yeah I think it started around then. And that's where the stick broke then he threw it to the back and smoothly grabbed a new one!!😀
Good grief he’s badass, hasn’t lost a beat, slayer letting him go and screwing him was the dumbest thing to do , I met Dave back in 88 and he was really cool and laid back and approachable. He is the king of thrash drummers. How many drummers out there have been influenced by him? He’s a beast
Number one drummer ever...he can play anything from any other great drummers in any style....but the other great drummers cannot play slayer tunes on point and time like he does....gene hoglan said so and gene is another of my top 5 drummers ever...even in numetal.or wherever is call...joey jordison
Fuckin guy is and ALWAYS will be a legend!🔥🤘🤘 His playing just gets faster and tighter with time. His high-hat isn’t even able to catch up to his tempo!😂🤣 BEAST!
Exactly what I'm thinking, when you have Mike Portnoy air drumming in the back like he's observing his idle his a huge Testament on how much of a G.O.A.T Dave is. His perfect drum fills and tone are unmatched in his genre 🤟❤
Other well known musicians are at the back stage, nerding out like a bunch of fans. So awesome. I would love to spend a whole show behind Dave, i want to see that power, speed and precision up close.
Dave's a big part of Slayer's history. Sad to see how he and Slayer parted but that's part of life's journey. He seems to be doing fine now and I wish him all the best!
The thing that really interesting about Angel Of Death's song is..IT'S APPLICABLE in Metallica's Battery song.Watch Metallica ft Dave Lombardo 2004 Download UK, where the outro of Battery suddenly turned into "Angel Of Death"., the most epic part during that time!!😂
Always remember my first Slayer show Tom,Jeff,Kerry and Dave... Tom was still headbanging and it is one of my favourite memories was blown away they played Silent scream I lost my shit 🤟💀🤟
Kinda sad Dave wasn't able to play the last Slayer show but this video is a blessing on all of us Slayer fans Dave Lombardo fans and thrash metal fans in general.
Anyway , " Angel of Death " is shit of Jeff & Dave's being☝️🏻 . Fuckin great lyrics & music by Jeff , and fuckin great drumming by Dave 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻. ……Album " Reign in Blood " is fuckin important for Jeff & Dave 's work . 😎
You know what this is better than? It's better than EVERY last one of those "5-year-old Japanese girls plays ..." or "half-blind Cocker Spaniel plays blah blah blah" videos.
The king of double bass and heavy metal drumming. Is not a more versatile. Or Elite drummer out there is in terms of defining the heavy metal scene from the 1980s. Until now. I mean, he's like fine wine. You just gets better with age. I mean that kind of music that he plays drums to is hard enough as it is to play. And at his age, he makes it seem just so effortless. He's a true icon of a drumming world. And the guys in Slayer were fools to let him ride out, but honestly, it was the best thing for his career. Cuz he's better now than he ever was in that band. He does drum clinics all the time. He takes the time out to see his fans& do drum clinics, drum solos , basically show off his drumming prowess. he's endorsed by Paiste cymbals, and I'm not too sure. What kind of Kit he's endorsed by if its Tama DD drums. Or Yamaha. But if there is any metal drummer out there that I look up to its him. And he blows away Paul bostaph.. Slayer could never survive without Jeff hanneman. And Dave Lombardo.. I mean Hell, he's on the metal Alliance tour Only the baddest motherfukers are on that tour.. d.lombardo the man!!!!
Listen, Paul Bosteph, is a great drummer. I have immense respect for him as a fellow drummer & musician as a whole, BUT go watch him on Slayer's "final tour". Dave is on a whole different level. He's solid in playing, flows like water. The man is a farking machine
No click, no triggers, great timing, great feel. Fucking incredible. And the hands... nobody can play his fills. Mostly cause hes left handed but it's so unique and fluid. And the dynamics. What a jerk!!! Making us look bad. Hahaha.
For the fucking life of me I'll never understand why Slayer wouldn't put their massive egos aside and put Lombardo on their final tour. Atleast for the final night.
Such a human feel! The tempo actually speeds up a hair rather than slows down like other players have to do. Check for yourself and compare the beginning to the end of the video.
Its his song he made it up!Imagen your band moving on playing tunes you made up with domeone new and getting paid for it cutting you out?Bullshit!!Slayer dudes did David dirty...
