And that‘s why ladies and gentlemen Dave is unparalleled/class of his own. No disrespect to Paul, but he never was the real clock and imho more importantly the inimitable rhythmic sound behind Slayer.
Yeee; Paul on some lives can't do the double bass pos-solo thing, and returns too early, when Dave make looks like he can do ALL Day Long, No stress. The classy on his playn is also only growing up.
@@superball401 when i saw their i 2nd to last show in oakland he didnt finish the song with the double bass and the ting in war ensamble wasnt there which hurt
Seen Slayer with Lombardo and Bostaph several times there is no comparison! Great respect for Paul is a good drummer but Dave is THE MAN !! Does't pull back, does't struggle, very fluid and less mechanical !
Lombardo is a drum god for sure, but out of the four times I saw Slayer, the Christ Illusion show was the least impressive. Dave made several mistakes (and knew it). They seemed unfocused and bored. Three times with Paul and they were flawless. Credit where credits due - Bostaph is a machine
@@ryanmacc4709 With this amount of power, yes, this is extremely fast. Is it Kollias, 260bpm+ speed? No. But George is not hitting as hard as this when he's playing that speed.
1:27 - Dave's right stick goes flying and he doesn't drop a beat just casually grabs another stick by his floor Tom and just keeps on shredding that kit 2:57 - Mike Portnoy air drumming to Slayer 😄
Lombardo is the living proof that you don't need a fancy kit with millions of shiny toms and cymbals to be a god! Simple drumkit, even after all these years, and still kickin' it like the best! Hail Dave 🤘
Don't you just absolutely love it when you hear and see fast double bass in metal with absolutely no triggering whatsoever, this is what makes Dave that bit better, how loud, fast and hard he can play is part of his style and sound, I'd rather hear the true sound of the bass drums and the acoustic quality that only hard fast and rapidly played drummers can create ,it opens the sound of the drum kit in a way that metal needs, I wish a few of the modern era drummers out there actually trying to play without the trigger set up, I love how the fast and heavy doubles become almost locked in and taking off and the way my feet feel when I am working it and keeping it steady and just drifting away in the beats playing for ages and letting it out.
24" bass drums actually help in that, because if you'd tune it to have the same frequency as a 22" would, the batter head would be tighter in comparison and thus allow better rebound. Having two bass drums allow them to breathe better and therefor sound less muddy than a double pedal on a single bass would. Because of this I think having double 24s is the secret of the trade. Lombardo also stated that he doesn't muffle his bass drums. A wide open sound sounds inherently bigger.
Here’s the only problem, this is only 200bpm double bass. When you get 230 to 270, it’s almost impossible to hear where (1) is, that’s why we trigger, George Kollias said it.
It sounds completely dead and muffled to me, like one of those Traps kits. Triggers can be used/balanced with a natural drum tone, and often sound better.
Haha spotted the smile and laugh when he realised he was behind after the pause going into the solo. Quickly upped the tempo and slotted right back in. It's not about the mistake it's about how you recover! Legend.
I think it was a matter of other musicians here, they were not clocked well since they didnt play together daily. Its really hard to get into tempo with someone you dont really know. You need to practice that off the scene a little first.
I have been playing drums since high school. Played many gigs over the years in various bands. In my younger years, I could effortlessly play anything including this piece. Now as I am older, getting through these faster songs is much more taxing yet Dave, being a year and a half older than me, is not only doing it effortlessly, he is doing so over an entire set. A truly amazing drummer!!!!
Damn he looks much older in this video compared to the 2011 Seattle video. Fuck, just another reminder that all my 80s Metal hero’s are getting older and so am I.
@@garrethigdon7678 Yes, Dave and members of Slayer wasn't getting paid well so Dave wanted to investigate with his own accountant to check the books of accounts but then the management bought Kerry and Tom and they kicked Dave out of the band.
@Gina Doll Nope, that was before Dave left Slayer. In 2011 Tom was thinking about retirement so Kerry and Dave thought they should form their band. Now I am pretty sure Paul Bostaph will be the drummer of Kerry's band.
@Gina Doll I have actually saw the whole interview of Dave Lombardo in which talked about it, Tom wanted to retire because of Jeff's death and his growing neck issues so because of it Kerry and Dave thought they should start their own band but Dave and Kerry had some sort of disagreement so Dave left Slayer. Kerry and Dave hate each other.
As a bassist, I love watching drum cams. We all know about Lombardo's feet, but let's talk about that fucking ride hand. How his right forearm doesn't look like Popeye is beyond me.
Man.. I’ve always said Dave fits slayer like a glove. Stylistically he is such a big part of why slayer sounds like slayer. Props to Dave 👍 love you sir
just seeing those first double kick 16 note blasts so smooth and with such precision was amazing...his heels and legs barely move...no extra motions...no overexertion...so much control and so little wasted energy or effort. Lombardo is a legend.
I remember as a kid listening to Reign In Blood album and thinking, "holy cow.. who's this guy!?" I was well into Anthrax at the time and love Benante, quite different drummers of course, Charlie is no slouch in the kicks too!! Anyway, I always thought as good as it sounded on album, live it would be an undistinguishable row... Many many years later in 2010 I saw Slayer (classic line up) in Wacken in Germany and prior to them coming on, I was anticipating the "row" HOW WRONG COULD I HAVE BEEN... they were clean, tight and light motherucking machine. It was an sonic assault and no messing. And of course, right at the back thundering away like his life depended on it was Dave Lombardo. Huge respect!
Dave Lombardo is a beast, hands down for the drum king of Thrash Metal. Jason Bittner is one of the best part of this video, I'll be in the same mood as him if I see Lombardo playing in front of me!
Ton loads of respect to Master Dave, after all these years, your drumming is still a force to reckon with! Salute to you sir, you're one of the reason why I fell in love with the kit.
UNMATCHED and I'm not overreacting,it's simply facts when Lombardo is in the conversation, best double bass drumming ever, that power on top of that speed is nowhere else to be seen.
I wasn't fortunate enough to see Slayer in general, but Dave was the fill in drummer for The Misfits when they played at MSG. I was watching him pretty much the whole time. His speed and abilities blew me away.
This for instance is why Master of puppets will never be THE1986 thrash album. A guy that can actually play his drum track in one take with no editing whatsoever. And he's still nailing it in his mid 50s.
All of us that are lucky enough to be able to play this song on drums all know that we can't play it like Dave, even though I can stroke for stroke play it ,it still doesn't sound like Dave Lombardo when I listen back to it. If you are a drum you know what I mean.
Is it me, or Dave changed his foot technique? He used to keep his heels very high when doing double bass, but know looks like he's more into flat-foot/ heel down technique. Nice, that he is having less leg movment, which conserves energy but his hitting power remained the same!
yes man, I also noticed......he´s using here some kind of full ankle technique.......and didn´t use to play like that or at least as far as I´ve been noticing in other videos
@@abellustgarten1446 Might not actually be his kit/setup---i think they had a bunch of drummers play that night---maybe he couldn't do his normal technique.
The GREATEST Heavy Drummer Ever. Dave Lombardo. Met Him and The rest of the band a LOOOOOng time ago. He Was So Kind and a lot of Fun to Hang With. Taught Me a Lot.. They Really Fucked Themselves when they Screwed Him Over. Much Respect for Paul Bostaph Who is Amazing as Well and I Loved His Work Especially On Diabolous..But Dave Was Slayer. Always Will Be.
