There's a fun story that the band shared about him that he recorded their first album in one sitting because "he had things to do later and didn't want to re-record anything" and honestly while their first album isn't the best album ever, the drums are still pretty precise even if filmed all in one sitting.

I think Sounding the Seventh Trumpet is one of their best albums personally, but the songwriting isn't the best in spots. Especially the lyrics, but songa like To End the Rapture, We Come Out at Night, and The Art of Subconscious Illusion go pretty hard.

Jimmy was so accurate that his drums sounded fake most of the time - and I mean that in the most complimentary way possible. He was good enough to be a high-caliber studio musician (which is really high praise, most drummers couldn't cut it as a professional studio drummer. Like not even close). The Rev's dynamics are nuts. For this style of music, you could pretty easily catch yourself just banging the hell out of every drum. But every time I see him go for his ride cymbal, he's always using very light taps, because that's all he needs to do to get the sound he wants. Same with that swell on the crash at the end of the last video you watched, he's very gently bringing the sound out of the cymbal after bringing the whole goddamn house down. All of the Almost Easy recording at the start shows this, too. He just hits the drums as hard as he needs to, which isn't very hard. The man had utter control.

@AdeptusCaeiusIII
@AdeptusCaeiusIII 2 года назад
IIRC, Jimmy preferred to get his tracks down in a 'live' recording, ie: playing the track start to finish to make sure it didn't need cutting and resampling. There are a lot of people that prefer to do guitar and drums that way, but it DOES speak to his professionalism behind the kit. The fact he wanted it 'live' so that he wouldn't have to change it when performing says a lot about how much he cared about having it right. Too many bands lean on recording piecemeal and can't play the track start-to-finish live. With Jimmy, it meant he could play the full album the way it was meant to be played when they performed live. Gates is the same way. He'll record one track of his guitar 'live', then double on subsequent tracks to ensure it sounds that way in a concert.

I got pictures with them, I got to hang out with them after the sets for a little bit and Jimmy really liked a watch I used to wear that was all black everything, but the hands would light up if you hit the button on the side. Before I even started playing drums, I’d watch that beast and the harlot drum cam video religiously. Jimmy’s the man that changed my life for the better. RIP

Jimmy is actually the reason why I start playing drum when I was 15 years old.. I grow up with only guitar on my daily lesson and never want to touch the drum, until I found Jimmy..

The Rev is one of my biggest influences! I was in middle school when Bat Country released and I immediately fell in love with the drumming. His death was the first time a genuinely felt sad about a famous person dying. RIPREV

Jimmy was such an absolute fucking beast, man, he was such an insane drummer and had a great sense of humour… Still sucks that he left us so early but his legacy still lives on, and happy birthday to Jimmy

I share a birthday with him and he was one of my heroes for a long time. He was a huge creative force and I wish we could have had more of his musical genius on record.

As far as I know he did a majority if not all his tracks in one take. Which is a big part of what made it’ amazing. He kept whatever mistakes he made in the track but somehow those mistakes are what made it so chaotic and amazing.

He was such an amazing drummer. One of my all time favourites, is one of the main reasons I started drumming 🤘🤘

I know what you mean about missing them, and certain bands. I went from kind of heavy, to WAY too heavy, and back again. I missed a ton of stuff in the middle that was all really good. Now I am learning to appreciate all sorts of stuff that before I would have skipped over. Not saying I still don't mainly listen to super heavy stuff though ha ha. Such a beautiful heart felt sign off too, Samus!

Sam says "That's a good place to cut this", like there ever is one for someone as badass as The Rev 😭. Regardless, just another amazing video showcasing some of the master's work. RIP brother.

I am born in 1998 right. I started listening to A7X when i was like 8 years old. Jimmy is the reason i got into drumming. I did everything self taught and just watching and listening to A7X. When i heard he passed away i got very sad as i never got to see him preform live with A7X. Very not normal but Avenged is one of if not my all time fave band because its what got me started with drumming. Still to this day not had the chance to see them live but that day will come hopefully next time they are in Norway. Thank you for this vid Samus
