You know a game is going to kick ass when the first boss is something the main character struggled against in his debut game, and you carve it clean in half down the middle while a rock song blares in the background.
So raiden stops an enormous ass blade with his small blade, grabs the metal gear, THROWS it in the air, the splits it wide open. Japan, u never cease to amaze me
Miles bbop I agree with you and personally think he was the character who ruined the direction of the entire series. When you think of metal gear you think of robots and ninjas now. No more of those slow moments with say, Big Boss explaining how engraving indents in a pistol handle can help you in a fist fight Now it's just... wacky un-explainable ninjas and robots with nano machines and super powers...
This is a theme throughout the entire game. The group in charge of implementing the audio deliberately have the instrumental version and vocal version of music kick in when certain conditions are met. Best example is that every time Raiden enters and exits Blade Mode the soundtrack takes a shift. And of course "Rules of nature" kicking in when Raiden blocks Metal Gear Rays Blade arm AND towards the end when hops on the missiles. I was blown away by this approach because it always drives these moments home, more so on your first play through :D
You must be referring to the point when his HP hits 40%? That one does feel a bit hit and miss. During my first fight against Monsoon it was perfect. I suppose if the track happens to be at certain point then a smooth transition might not be possible.
Now THIS is how to present a tutorial. You can hardly tell it's the first real fight of the game, it streamlines most everything with no extra flab to bore the player.
Ian Roper It's weird. Almost every studio either has a game that flopped or at least has a couple mediocre games that aren't too memorable. All of Platinum Game's productions have been superb. Vanquish just faded due to poor marketing but was an awesome game, and Bayonetta is just incredible. It's impressive.
I read online in the lore of the metal gear mecha that almost all of them have synethic muscles or something like that are susceptible to bleeding, if not real blood, then some other kind of fluid thats like blood to the machines.
Just love how over the top the fight is, fighting a giant robot in the tutorial, flipping him in the air. Then, later jumping on missiles to get closer to attack, and running down that clock tower I love this game so much
Ik this is super unrealistic and Technology (As well as Physics) will never allow this to happen and even if we do reach this point I'll probably already be dead. But if I get the opportunity to become a Cyborg ninja in the future and the Cybernetics lets me pull of stupid over the top shit like that. I am 100% gonna do it.
Sam and Armstrong might have been the best bossfights the game had to offer, but there's just something epic about fighting something a thousand times bigger than yourself that really made this so special. And not to forget 3:17.
Memes aside, cutting in half what used to be one of the final bosses in Raiden's debut game and one of the toughest battles in that one JUST IN THE TUTORIAL is an incredible gameplay/narrative tool to see how strong Raiden has got in all those years after the Big Shell incident
@@SonoftheFortunate Yes, I knew from the very beginning that this was going to be amazing, and I confirmed it when "Rules Of Nature" started blasting in the background.
@@SonoftheFortunate this for me. Raiden just going "fuck classical fighting styles against targets bigger then you, imma just match it in strenght" is fucking awesome
What some people might not realize about this fight (and the rest of the game) is that every time the Zandatsu/blade moments occur, the music changes between at least two instrumental versions, while the QTEs at the end are where it crescendos and you hear the lyrics to Rules of Nature. I didn't realize it until it was pointed out, as it's done very subtly, but it's honestly a stroke of genius as it keeps the player engaged in the tempo of the fight without interfering with the flow of gameplay. Platinum did a solid job with the game.
There's a very tiny detail about this fight that I love. After the first round, on the rank screen it says "Kills -", foreshadowing the fact that you didn't finish it off yet
@@zachbrewer1373 yup a sword and a cyberninja that lifted a 200 foot robot and cut its arm and body in half and then killed a president with nanobots which wanted to destroy the world, yup just a ninja and a sword right?
The boss gameplay itself is good, but where this becomes a masterclass is in cinematic and sound design. The way the music is made to hit its high points at moments of high action is perfect.
Commandant: "At the moment, every industrialized nation on the globe knows the specifications for Metal Gear. Worse yet, so do a number of rogue states. They are all working on deploying their own Metal Gear force to compete with the US's nuclear strike capability. The world is about to see a swarm of these Metal Gear derivatives. We initiated development on Metal Gear RAY as a countermeasure to these pirated weapons forces. The only thing that can stand up to a Metal Gear is of course - another Metal Gear. With RAY, the hundreds if not thousands of Metal Gears that exist all over the world are no longer a threat. The blind rush to nuclear proliferation, and it will be the Marine Corps, and our RAY, that will accomplish this. This weapon will render all other Metal Gears obsolete. Nations building up their own Metal Gear force will think twice about their nuclear strategy in light of the nuclear dominance spelled out by RAY. The shift in the balance of power will mean a new world order. And we, the Marine Corps, will play a central role in its military affairs. Ours is not the only military project devoted to Metal Gear development, but it cannot be more different in nature than the Navy's Arsenal project. Theirs is a program that will add fuel to the uncontrolled fire of nuclear proliferation. It is a fact that players in favor of such a policy are attempting to derail our own RAY project. But I promise you, they will not succeed. Some say that the strategic importance of aircraft carriers will be reduced by the completion of RAY. The opposition from the Navy is an undeniable fact. There is a lot of pressure from Navy brass, especially those with submarine and air background. Not to mention interference from a major player... This project is vital to the Marine Corps. The enemy is sometimes closer to home than you think, gentlemen. Always bear that in mind. I have a daughter and it is my greatest wish never to have her, or her children, experience the horror of nuclear war. As a father, I want to leave a better world for the future generation. As a soldier, I know that is my duty. Metal Gear RAY is amphibious, unlike the Army's REX. It can cruise deep underwater, move in undetected and make its landing on any shoreline. Its onboard Joint Tactical Information Distribution System identifies targets with unerring accuracy and takes them out with massive firepower. It is the ultimate weapon and it is yours to guard. I'd like you all to think about what that means. The National Missile Defense program was initiated at the end of the 20th century, projected to completion in 2005. However, the NMD trial conducted in the year 2000 was a complete failure and the success of the 1999 trials is now considered a chance happening. There was no technological solution in sight and the program was already attracting strong criticism from Russia and China for its potential violation of the Anti-Ballistic Missile agreement. The fact that any development in missile defense would trigger accelerated weapons development has been pointed out from the very beginning. President Sears forced the NMD proposal through and succeeded in deploying the program. Some say that it was a military interest - with plans for the hundred billion dollar program budget that actually arranged the legislative approval. Former President Sears did also act towards reducing the nuclear stockpile while nurturing the NMD concept. It was he who lowered START3's ceiling for tactical nuclear weapons in order to bring Russia around to approving a revision to the ABM treaty. Everyone believed the world was headed for the end of the arms race when Shadow Moses happened. Even though the development of Metal Gear REX is still outside the bounds of official truth, everyone in the international military community knows the facts. Its specs spread across the globe like wildfire, and the nuclear race was on again. The only thing that can reverse its course is this Metal Gear RAY. The Metal Gear REX development on Shadow Moses was supposedly the first preparatory measure taken against the future possibility of reduced nuclear defense capability. An NMD technology leak to other nations would make that contingency likely. But if this theory is correct, it means that there was a calculated intent to cash in on this opportunity by specific interests within the military-industrial complex. We are here today to flush out and rid our country of corrupt sources. That is our mission and you will bear that in mind. George Sears surrendered his presidency in the aftermath of Shadow Moses. The official reason given did not, of course, include the development of Metal Gear REX and next-generation nuclear warheads. But even you will have heard rumors that he was forced to resign after a failed cover-up cost him his influence in the political community. This Metal Gear RAY is a prototype designed to be operated by an onboard pilot. In its final form, RAY will be unmanned, driven by tele-existence and an autonomous control system. The importance of next-generation technology such as C4ISR and RMA in battle situation has been discussed time and again, but RAY is the first to deploy it so fully. With RAY's completion, the Marine Corps will lead the way for a new age of military tactics. We will proceed out of New York Harbor and conduct top-secret field testing of RAY. Shadow Moses has turned the public opinion against weapons development and this training needs to stay convert. We cannot risk jeopardizing the program on the eve of its completion. The disguised oil tanker is a part of our cover. RAY is well worth all these precautions. Trust me. It is an undeniable fact that there is a force at work in our government and within the military, seeking to control national affairs to suit its own interests. Metal Gear RAY bears the burden of confronting this party, thwarting their plans and guiding this nation back to its original path. This exercise is but the first step towards that goal - the future of the country rests with you tonight. The brain drain of nuclear specialists and the black market trade in weapons- grade plutonium has been fueling a cottage industry in nuclear weapons since late last century. Add Metal Gear to the mix and the result is the new proliferation you see the world over. We once lived in the shadow of the doomsday machine. This Metal Gear RAY can bring other Metal Gears under control and ensure that we never know that fear again. And we, the Marines, will be the guardians of this peace. This new model of Metal Gear is codenamed RAY, after the great Manta Ray. Our RAY has a sting that nature never gave the Manta. With this latest Metal Gear, we can rule the sea and land as we never have before. The proliferation and development of Metal Gear technology are about to render agreements like the NPT and START obsolete. There are also forces at work trying to exploit this disturbing trend their own power and influence. The human race is about to slide back into the endless arms race of that last century and we cannot afford to play that Russian Roulette again. The Metal Gear RAY you see is here to prevent that possibility. We the Marines will lead the charge into a new world order with Metal Gear RAY. That is all dismissed." Raiden, 11 years later: lol whats this bitch ass metal gear doing here, gtfo scrub
I regret skipping this game thinking it was a MGS knock-off with Raiden being the lead role. This game looks insane :D I might have to grab it. Soundtrack was epic!
The game was originally developed outside Kojima's supervision. When it began to look like an epic fail without any innovation, Kojima got back in the field, changed all the plot by himself and created this wonderful spin off. Best part is, Kojima kept Raiden in his role of kick ass slasher, without trying to give him Solid Snake's charisma. A good choice that saved Raiden's public reception also in MGS4 (after he got destroyed by critics in MGS2...). Grab it :)
Predyz Um, no. Kojima was working on MGSV. He handed the development of the game to Platinum Games who morphed the free cutting concept into a full-fledged game; the director was Kenji Saito, a Platinum member. The plot/script was handed to one of Kojima's men, not Kojima himself.
I played this for the first time this weekend. This may be my favorite boss fight of all time. When I was running down the clock tower, I was just screaming “I. Am. UNSTOPPABLE”!
Yep because wolverine is awesome but the thing is since wolverine is durable he still can't keep up with raiden because he's very fast and of course wolverine has a quick temper so it's not enough to beat raiden when he's in the berserker rage eventhough he ignores all pain. Sorry if I am giving a nerd fact
The thing is that Wolverine can heal himself almost instantly, but no one ever slashed a limb out of him, otherwise he would die, now thats convenient. He is Wolverine, not Deadpool. Raiden wins.
@@JXKyrian no I was talking about the game genre which is still alive thanks to dmc.But speaking about the sequel there are multiple leaked infos about dmc 6 been in development and it won't come any time soon so it's going to be another 10 years of wait
At the beginning of the fight, RAY will shoot those missiles at you that get stuck in the ground, if you immediately run backwards, he'll do the tail attack and you'll have the opportunity to cut it off. It will get you the *Steel Tail* Achievement/Trophy.
Undoubtedly one of the best fights in video games. The high-octane music, the cinematic flair, a boss with a plethora of moves to deal with, and the David VS Goliath mentality. P* has always excelled with these things, but for me, the RAY fight stands out as a true flex of their creativity.
I always found it interesting that last game where you play as Raiden, MGS2, ended with a bossfight with standard Rays. In this game, several fights with a modified more dangerous Ray is literally the tutorial boss.
***** he means the ninja theory dante, which has been outright stated to be an alternate reality dante, which means our beloved red coat wearing, pizza munching, wisecracking badass is still awesome.
i cant believe this game is 10 years old already. i remember back when i was 13 exactly 10 years ago, i would stay up all night to wait for this game to be released and lets just say that i did not regret it at all RULES OF NATURE
And that's mindblowing. The final phase of a boss fight indicated not by some immersion breaking glow or highlighter. Indicated by the sudden, smooth introduction of the CHORUS AND BRIDGE of each /UNIQUE/ BOSS FIGHT TRACK.
He used his right hand to keep hold of his sword to catch the blade and not cut his hand off, while I am sure some kind of gripping pressure was made, the majority of that throw into the air was done with one arm.
He then runs DOWN A TOWER DODGING MISSILES THE PLASMA RAY AND SLICE THE THING IN HALF WHILE HE DOES THE ANIME ONLY THE CUT APPEARS WHEN I HIDE MY SWORD
it must be fun being awesome CAUSE FUCKING LOOK AT THAT THE GUYS USING MISSILES AS STEPPING STONES RAN DOWN A BUILDING WHILE DODGING A PLASMA LASER AND MORE MISSILES AND BLOODY PICKED THE THING UP AND THREW IT!!! AND THEN RAN DOWN ITS BACK SLICING IT IN HALF!!
I remember that time when I played Metal Gear Rising on Revengeance difficulty. First time doing PERFECT Counter on Ray... Skipped the whole battle phase.
Uni-Tsun-Tsun Lastation Sister im pretty sure killing one ray thats actually moving with a SWORD is more badass then fighting 6 stationary rays with a missle launcher.
He simply incapacitated them temporarily. They all walk back to their positions and let another undamaged ray take over. Solidus had to actually kill them or one of them while the rest got shut off by the worm cluster Emma developed. In here they simply have no chance and these are even more powerful rays than in MGS2.
