Imagine fighting REX in MGS1 and all of the sudden he starts rushing, side stepping, kicking and jumping around trying to crush, kick and combo you because Liquid found the STREET FIGHTER subroutine program.
@@PrincessTwilightdash No actually, the reason for that was that the subroutine was hidden inside REX's programming and only Otacon was able to access it because he was the one who installed it secretely and was the only one who knew that the simulation existed.
Oh god I've would have panic if rex could pull off cqc moves out of nowhere he'd squish my dad if he did that th3 first time ( as i was a kid and I couldn't play on his save file and i have hard time doing stealth games)
@@Mister_BIack It's really a mix of both, REX really wouldn't have been able to do most of those tricks in the very enclosed space of the hangar. Also, the rushing and sidestepping moves were never mentioned by Otacon as par of the street fighter program, merely the commands you can activate when close enough to RAY.
Well for one I think like one person already said there wasn't enough room in the building to utilize Rex's full potential and for 2 otacon installed an update into Rex's computer while your fighting off the suicide gekko and Raiden with vamp

I just noticed that in mgs3 there is a medicine if you eat it you die temporarily with game over scene. But if you move you become alive.... Kinda hilarious stuff lol. Maybe Ocelot took that med and pranked solid. LOL

It's crazy how Snake took down Rex in MGS1, badly damaging it and years later in MGS4, left there with no maintenance whatsoever, it still functions like a beast and manages to defeat a "superior" Metal Gear. Just goes to show how scary of a weapon of mass destruction Rex is.

Rex is a mobile nuclear platform with stealth launch capabilities, it doesn't need that much armor because it was built to launch indirect attacks. The ray however is a direct combat weapon, if this wasn't a game, the Ray would have totally whipped that ass.

+Scauldron Jhon on top of that, this version of Rex has the prototype STREET FIGHTER program he made. It was added into the firmware but not activated, increasing Rex's mobiility and allowing it to perform CQC. (it's in a codec call in youtube, you can search for it.)
this is just proof that REX was the superior machine all along. It gets destroyed and sits in an abandoned hangar for years, and with nothing more than minor repairs is able to power through hundreds of Gekkos AND a fresh, new RAY with an experienced pilot. REX is boss.

I had fun playing it. Was it written like casablanca? Hell no. It wasn't even the best of the series. But that doesn't mean we need to be slinging around add hominem insults about fans of a game that, for all intents and purposes, was actually pretty good. And in my defense, I don't have think there needs to be any pretense about enjoying a giant robot fight; everybody can like watching two huge machines beat the shit out of each other, and it doesn't need to be lord of the rings to be fun to watch and play. Victor Katilis You also forget Rex has a secret weapon that Ray doesn't: CQC capabilities. Otacon built a secret program for Rex to be able to do CQC, so when Ray was built they did not know that Metal Gears could be outfitted with such a combat feature. Ray didn't get CQC capabilites until Metal Gear Rising when cyborgs became a bigger threat then nuclear weapons.
Gilgamesh ,the treasure hunter Arsenal doesn't count. It's a mobile base, not a Metal Gear. And technically Excelcus isn't a Metal Gear since it cannot launch nukes, but they decided to give it the Metal Gear tag because it sounded cool.
As soon as RAY was introduced, I imagine people started thinking about a RAY vs REX fight. Imagine their giddiness when they realize this battle is about to happen.

Damn, 8 years... and this is still my favorite mech fight in gaming. An old, dying man with chronic pain piloting the Metal Gear he wrecked 9 years earlier, vs his own brother piloting a brand-new Metal Gear designed to destroy Metal Gears... _AND HE STILL WINS!!_
This entire sequence was written and executed only for the fans lol. I guarantee Kojima was like alright you want mgs4, well here it is. Didn't even want to make the game and completely wrnt beyond all out to appease every single person in the fan base and tie up the entire storyline into one beautiful fukkin package.

Rex was always the king of the Metal Gears. The first Metal Gear didn't even move, Metal Gear D was beat by Grenades, Raiden trashed like a dozen Metal Gear Rays by himself, and he was just a virtual soldier compared to Snake. Meanwhile it took Solid Snake in his prime and Grey Fox, two of the greatest soldiers to ever live, giving it everything they had to DISABLE Rex, not even kill it. Just a few squirts of lithium grease and a jump start and Rex is back up and kicking ass no problem. Snake could have probably drove Rex home after that, all he really needed was an oil change and a detail and he would have been good as new.

Am I the only one who finds the ending humorous af.. Two old men fighting each other.. & Solid Snake running after Liquid Ocelot after injuring himself, and Liquid just lol'ing away LMAO
It's an embarrassing moment. Snake sticking his landing like a brick on gravel. Ocelot playing dead for no reason except to undermine a previously good moment. And of course, two old men awkwardly shuffling towards the sea with one of them basically going "nyehhhhhh". Why didn't Snake try shooting him? He wasn't exactly running serpentine. Kojima went out of his way to make it as ridiculous as possible. It's a really funny scene, in a sad way.

This was probably the most satisfying thing in the whole game... I really loved how this game let you finally pilot a metal gear yourself. And not just any, but Rex, the best model (in my opinion). Ray was good, but honestly, Rex will always be the best model in my eyes. No matter how many they make.
Nope ever since I got an 8.1 laptop in 2013 ive stuck with it on everything. Had my gaming PC in 2016 at Windows 7 and just last year n November updated to 8.1 again and it is super fast now
The original Rex model is insanely terrifying. The fact it was a mobile nuke launcher alone makes it terrifying, but it was left in that hanger for 9 years after it was taken down by snake and all it needed to continue operating was repairing the cockpit that was shot with stinger missles.

Hal needed to find a way for Rex to defend itself when up close and personal with combatants, and B. Because he's such an adorable otaku that the mere thought of giant mechs punching each other is too awesome Liquid never used the close combat capabilities for only Otacon knew they existed.
the cqc routines would be much more effective with Sahelantropus, since it had arms. and by the way, if Otacon was the otaku that his nickname suggests, why didn't he use the design of sahelantropus for Rex? The arms and walking upright things i mean, in the 21 years between Sal and Rex surely the technoly ould have progressed enough to have it normally pilotable.
Because Sahelantropus was expensive as shit and only one model was meant to be made. REX was supposed to be cheap and mass produced, hence why it's smaller.
Dammit... I was trapped in that rubble... but I watched Snake's deathbattle... and Ray was designed to kill other Metal Gears, and Snake destroyed it. Basically, this shows Snake's tremendous skill.
I like how the Rex vs Ray fight could have the same dynamic like Snake and Liquid. How Ray is suppose to be the “Rex killer” and Liquid having the superior genes, while Rex/Snake are suppose to be inferior or have the “recessive genes”.
This makes me imagine a spin-off where it only focuses on the Metal Gear Mechs themselves, but somehow they’re granted sentience (throw in googly eyes and cylinder shaped black brows for good measure somehow) with dynamics mimicking the relationships between certain characters in the main series, here’s my take: REX and RAY: siblings Sahelanthropus: father of the two brothers Metal Gear D: the family friend Metal Gear TX55: ??? Shagohod: the family’s rival Metal Gear ZEKE: plays everyone like a damn fiddle (even RAY does it too as a prank) Arsenal Gear: it’s literally a submarine, how the hell can i give it a personality? Metal Gear EXCELSUS: political sword brandishing spider crab that’s somehow a master chef of making omelettes. And is a Microsoft Excel user. Metal Gear RAXA: Magneto as a mech basically. Gekko: just your standard everyday passerby and “NPC” This is literally a shitpost/sitcom just waiting to happen, I’d be more than willing to see a series just like that play out. Either by GMod or SFM, imagine how it’d play out.
People ask this all time "how did Rex beat Ray when Ray is supposed to superior in every way?" Realistically speaking, Ray was faster than Rex but as a result of being quicker it had less armor (weight slows you down, that is just physics) while Rex is a literal tank, its hulky and slow but has alot of power behind it and also new tech or not, alot of old tech still holds up better than the tech now a days, (my ps2 still going strong while my ps3 craps out after a couple years is proof of that) but if we are talking game wise, than Snake won because he is the main character. Metal Gear Rex FTW.
Technically the "weapon to surpass Metal Gear" was actually Zero's weapon, Solid Snake. The perfect soldier. Solid Snake had managed to beat every single Metal Gear thrown his way, truly surpassing it. He even beat the "World's Greatest Soldier", Big Boss.
I love just how much chaos there are on that very beginning , the way Rex stumble and with the screen shaking on every step + the explosions couldn't have made it any better
Sometimes I have a bit of a tough time deciding whether I like REX or RAY more in terms of design. Although it feels a tad outdated, there is certainly an appeal to REX' bulky-as-hell, boxy design. It's armored to the teeth and appears to be the most stable of the two. The railgun also looks pretty dope. I remember when I first played MGS as a kid and thinking how fitting the name REX was for this MG. Its overall shape, coupled with the beastly roar really did remind me of t-rex. On the other hand we have RAY, which appears to have been designed as the antithesis of REX, in both form and function. Its incredibly sleek and amphibian design definitely made me think "YUP. This *would* be the navy's metal gear." It appears to have more maneuverability than REX, but I remember when I first looked at it and wondering how the thing even managed to stand on those dainty feet. I think they're both freakin great, but the bias of nostalgia gives REX just a bit more edge. What can I say, it's a classic. I feel like the reason I don't feel as strongly about RAY is that it was massively produced ever since its introduction in MGS2. You fight multiple ones in MGS2 and a few more times in MGR. Kinda unrelated to anything above but... I don't quite like Sahelanthropus' design nearly as much as the aforementioned metal gears. I dig the fact that it makes for a really imposing figure when it is standing upright, and I like that it somewhat ressembles REX when it's about to use the rail gun but... that's kinda it. The headpiece being... pretty goddamn similar to REX' cockpit kinda takes me out of it. It looks as though they've stuck REX' head onto another robot. I first imagined a Rex vs Ray fight as a fanfiction when I was a teen. When I saw the fight in a trailer before the game’s release this was like a fantasy come true!

Each time one is destroyed a pop up in the lower right section of the screen shows up saying what he posted. :)))))))
I really like the segment where REX runs through base tunnels, breaking and stomping everything in it's path. The feeling of raw power and superiority over little gekkos is intoxicating.
find it kinda weird how rex picks up ray by its wing/arm, yet the cockpit is in its mouth, youd have to duck pretty low in order not to get crushed in the process id assume
+TyberZann777 Oh yes. The wee Metal Gear MKIII on board probably carried out the repairs . It actually fixed Rex in the first place (after the damage Snake had done during the Shadow Moses incident) and most likely done repairs during the fight as well :)
Keep in mind that RAY was made specifically to counter other Metal Gears, including REX itself. Not to mention that Liquid Ocelot has experience in piloting Metal Gears. However the one factor that gave Solid Snake the advantage was Otacon's guidance and utilizing the "Street Fighter" program he secretly installed in REX.
It also helped that, yes, RAY was built as a Metal Gear killer, but more so against knock off Metal Gear REXs that were made after the events of Metal Gear Solid. This fight proves that the original REX was superior all along
When I first played this game with a friend, I wholeheartedly enjoyed this fight. I always imagined what a fight between two Metal Gears would be like and damn it, this game delivered.
seeing Raiden suplex the Metal Gear Ray in Metal Gear Rising years later like that was nothing makes me say that if Raiden wasn't stuck on those rocks he could probably defeat it easily
This just proves how badass REX is. REX had the shit kicked out of it, left to rot, rail gun removed and armour destroyed. RAY was an Anti-REX. It's whole purpose is to destroy Metal Gears, and REX still kicked its ass, and it didn't have to be bloody Sehalanthropus to do it.
Trey Owen RAY could pummel a Kaiju, even an unmanned RAY could. REX might be able to handle one also, but Sahelanthropus would just slice right through one with its freaking sword.
Redstone Casey Well, the data of sahelanthropus was not released to the black market and the original designs of REX was basic as they only had part datas of the shagohod and at most Zeke so it was shaky at best, thanks to otacon's full epic mecha design and interest, he came as close as possible to sahelanthropus
Despite basically knowing nothing about Metal Gear, and having only played Phantom Pain, which felt like a fairly generic stealth game to be honest, though honestly from what I’ve seen even excluding Revengeance, Metal Gear has rarely really been about stealth, with a frankly bare bones open world. Despite all that shitting on Phantom Pain, Metal Gear Rex has always been one of my favourite mech designs, it has this slightly archaic quality when compared to Metal Gear Ray. And I always liked old vs new battles where the old wins.
This battle makes far more proportional sense than Raiden picking a RAY up by the arm and slamming it, then slicing the RAY in half in like ten seconds.

When you first played this game on ps3 and then you was like oh I wish I could drive rex, and then you load up and your in the pilot seat your like YES YES YES, and make a separate save just before it so you can go back whenever you want to and drive rex
REX shut down due to a depleted power source, not due to the damage RAY caused. Which is impressive given RAY was designed to counter REX and REX went into the fight sporting prior damage, lacking maintenance and missing it's primary weapon. Oh and most of the munitions for REX's onboard weaponry had also been depleted prior to the fight.
