Metal Muff (by Electro-Harmonix)
Here's a big ol' distortion pedal for you. How does the Metal Muff sound through a Marhsall Plexi? This isn't the most expensive pedal out there, but it seems fairly popular in some circles. The name would suggest that it's not ideally suited for blues, but for a rather more aggressive genre (romantic German music?).
Anyway, all jokes aside, here's the EHX's contribution to the pantheon of overdrive and distortion pedals.
Enjoy!

I use this pedal all the time, but I use it for noise rock and black metal. It's really just a really jacked up Big Muff with an EQ and treble booster so if you look at it that way instead of as a "metal pedal" you can see what the uses for it are. It sounds fantastic if you run it through a slightly crunchy American voiced tube amp.

This pedal is great for old school black metal. That’s all I’ve ever used it for and it does great at that. But that’s all

This man is full of contradictions!! ;) - Using a Marshall amp, but getting distortion from a Fender pedal. - Using a Strat style guitar, but made of mahogany like Gibsons. - Using single coils but it's actually small humbuckers. Still sounding great :)

I had one of these...with the right rig and right settings it can be useful...but not without serious tweaking. my suggestion would be an ibanez sm7 smash box. If you can find one try it out.

Great review Elmo. Good move breaking out the Universe, the Strat isn't really going to get the full benefit of a more extreme sounding pedal like this. I agree that a darker amp might have worked better, or an amp/cab setup more designed for thrash/death tones. A lot of the noises it made were horrible, but it also sounded very versatile (loads of dynamic range on the EQ) so I reckon with the right rig this could be a promising device. I'd say it was definitely "off genre" for the Elmo style though 😉👍

I own and use a Marshall 1987x plexi and I also have used a Metal Muff through it. I would suggest to get a decent tone from that particular combo, to stick the MM through the clean low channel of the amp and reduce the treble on the MM to virtually 0, boost mids and bass along with your amp settings. Don't run anymore gain other than the pedal and set the Top boost to no more than 9 o'clock and just use as a boost for solos. You would probably get an half decent tone out of it if dialled in correctly, oh and preferably use something with humbuckers! 😉

Got one circa 2006. I used it with a vox VR30 and it was ok. The top boost is trash. It's useful for someone who needs alot of gain for a cheap price.

Why don't you make a review of SESSION amps? They are suposed to be a valve like solid state amps. The page is www.award-session.com. Thanks!

Tbh I don't know why this pedal gets such a bad rap- it's pretty good imo. The top boost is pretty much useless- unless you have the darkest guitar/amp ever but- the regular side of the pedal sounds good. It's not my style of music or pedal, maybe that's why I can't hear the subtle differences between it and the more popular metal pedals. But everyone seems to hate it- I've seen it on two different guy's "worst pedals ever" list.

Does anybody know how this pedal reacts to rolling back on the guitar volume knob? Particularly at lower gain settings. Btw incredible playing and keep killing it!

To quote a famous jedi- "These are not the droids you're looking for." - this pedal just isn't that kind of pedal. If you back of the volume you just get a little bit quieter version of the same thing. And there's really no such thing as a "low gain" setting on this pedal- it's a high gain metal pedal.

@@stoneysdead689 Hey thankyou friend. I will look elsewhere
@stoneysdead689
@stoneysdead689 Год назад
@@ladyjulia4038 No prob.- if you are looking for a really good low gain drive the Tumnus by Wampler, or Tumnus Deluxe- is really something special. They're not cheap, but they sound unbelievably good for low gain blues, classic rock style stuff. The JHS Morning Glory is another great low gain blues drive. And if you want a really solid budget option- the Pure Sky by Caline is so good lots of pros use it, lots of guys have replaced 200$ drives with it- and it's only like 35 bucks.
@ladyjulia4038
@ladyjulia4038 Год назад
@@stoneysdead689 I wouldn't say I'm looking for low gain. I'm looking for modern rock n roll sounds. At the same time though. I want it to be very dynamic and clean up well.

I guess it depends on what genre of music you like. I don’t think Metal Muff is meant for metal, oddly enough. Seems more like a hard rock or blues kind of pedal. In which case I’m sure there my be better options for those styles of music. I guess this pedal really isn’t needed. For the price range and for metal tones one might give the Boss Metal Core a go. I think it gets shit on just for having core on it but it’s not at all bad for metal tones. Thanks for the excellent demo, Elmo.

It works really well as a doomy shoegazy kind of pedal, I use it for that all the time. It makes more sense when you realize that the circuit is just three Big Muff Pis cascading into each other and then going through an active EQ and treble booster. It's certainly not meant to sound like a high gain amp.

As many pedals too gainy and fizzy (e.g. the Rat, the Metal Zone etc) they acquire (good) meaning when used as preamps straight in the fx loop return instead that in front. My 2 cents. By the way you kick ass as always.
