This week I make a parting blade that will allow me to part off next to the lathe chuck jaws. I need to get a real parting blade holder for my Dixon tool post but until then this is going to need to work. I also square up a block of A2 tool steel in the shaper and show some of the garden. Heck, I even go Black Widow hunting. Want to help support the channel? Click on the link below to join my patreon. / stevesummers

Steve, you're a blessed man - sounds like you have a wife who cares for you dearly, kids to pass your wisdom to, a nice patch of land to grow things on, and a well-set-up shop to tinker and build things with. I appreciate my wife, son and shop too. No worries about the "simple" stuff like brushes in a grinder or making a special cutting tool, it's all part of the shop life as Adam calls it. We need to make/maintain parts and equipment, and sometimes it helps to get ideas from others in the community. Thanks for sharing what you do.

Shapers are one of my favorite machines nice shop good to see young guys staying at the old ways I'm an old machinist/tool and die/mill right grew up with a dad the learned to be a mechanic by helping the town black smith put together model Ts that farmers had ordered from Sears and roebuck. So I learned from him to run, build, and fix pretty much anything mechanical. Keep it up.

Steve, we used to buy 4 inch diamond cutters for masonry. I know they are not precision but if they are too out of round you could still use them in a 4 inch grinder. Our tomato's were late but were loaded! They are dying out now due to late blight. Great video and it is great to have the family involved. Even as a bricklayer, I had my wife and two kids, a girl and boy, out there mixing mortar and carrying material. My daughter recently thanked me for teaching them good work ethics. My son was working on becoming a bricklayer, too! He went on to college to become a culinary artist and runs his own bakery business. I am retired but very interested in machine trades...never too old to learn new things, Greg in Southern Ohio.

Hello Greg. I started learning to dry stack rocks because I love the old walls around here and I have more flat rocks than I could ever use. I just never did it long enough to get real good. Not as easy as people think. Bricklaying is a great trade and can pay good money for someone willing to work. Thanks for watching

Your lucky your kids like them too it is getting harder for newer generations to appreciate some of the old generation tools. I really do appreciate you really work with your tools you can tell by the way you had your hand on the ram of your shaper to feel for vibrations. Great video if I didn't say it before.

Another great video Steve! Sometimes, the hodge podge type videos are the best ones IMO. It's good to show simpler things like changing brushes, or any other maintenance that might come along. You never know who's watching. Could be some young man who has never changed brushes on a power tool before, but now he has an idea of how to do it. Great video as always! Have a great rest of the weekend fella!

Just an observation on the parting tool grind,the knowledge of which was passed on to me by a cutter grinding toolmaker many year's ago. When you ground the 2 degrees side clearance,it is not necessary to incline the 1 degree as well. The reason for this is that when you apply the 3 degrees top rake,the back part, looking down on the top of the blade will automatically dovetail inwards because you are further down the inclines on the side where the thickness is less.

Morning Steve love that cutter grinder it gives you uniformity, I'd like to see Abom send you the big spiral cutter he has now, that would be a project but once it's set up it's just a repeat. Date time is where you get it right. I'm waiting on her to inform you y'all have dinner date that you wasn't aware of. What is it about oilers I'm sure we all did that I know I did, heck yesterday I had a oil can in hand at the shop and a lady asked what's that, the next thing I know she has it in hand finding things to oil, great content have a great day as I'm running late been extremely busy at the shop

For sure you got it right using the bench or pedestal grinder for roughing a HSS cutter. The most useful is a large pedestal grinder with 2-3 hp. Those allow you to lean on the cutter to speed up roughing it. Make sure you have a bucket of water nearby to cool the cutter so you dont burn your fingers. A solid table that can be angled up and down in front of the grinding wheel also helps to have more control when roughing. By the way if the front cutting lip is not exactly parallel but tilted 2-3 degrees with the right corner sticking out a little you get a clean face on your work while the remaining burrs stay with the stump in the chuck.

I agree with the comment suggesting better draining soil for the tomatoes. Perhaps some sand ammendment might help. That and a fence to keep out the deer. They just destroy tomato and potato plants, among other things. Love the shaper work, it is oddly soothing, almost hypnotic.

Thanks to Abom79! Adam's visit turned me on to your channel. I really enjoy (much like Adam) your laid back style, but great attention to detail. I am not a machinist, but have always been fascinated with machine work. It's really nice to see someone get a job done, and really well, by simply being resourceful, as opposed to having every machine, bell, and whistle the industry has to offer!! I can actually take a lot of your ideas and apply them to my wood shop! Also, I enjoy the beautiful piece of land that your shop sits on, and the garden, etc. Finally, I have to mention that you are blessed with one of the prettiest shop assistants that I have ever seen! Is the way she dresses a part of your shop dress code, or is she just that conscientious about how she dresses for work?? ;-) Either way, great channel and I'm really enjoying your videos! At last, I have heard it all. "My angle grinder didn't work because a black widow ate it :)" . Understand, by the way, your tomatoes. Fickle things. Mine are doing well but we are now in fall mode. Lack heat. I really was impressed by the finish on the shaper-ed part. That is why shapers survived as long as they did.

I do electronic design and fabrication, and use a low-power zoom [3.5~17x] stereo microscope to see what I'm doing when hand-soldering tiny parts onto circuit boards. My basement office/shop is home to several kinds of spiders, and I can sometimes persuade one to stay on a business card so I can slide him/her under the 'scope. Of their eight eyes, spiders have a pair of eyes on their back, so they look up at you as you watch from above!

Hi! I really like watching your shaper work, and it’s not a machine many have in their shop. I sort of understand why they are so accurate, it’s a lot of metal, not easily warped. You probably know more or less how it wears as well. An interesting fact, many people around the world have heard of “black widows” before, because of their venome, even in countries with no poisenous spiders :)

@SteveSummers
@SteveSummers 6 лет назад
Depends, They both have good and bad points. To be honest It don't make much difference. The siphon system is safer to build unless you already have a small pressure vessel. The siphon system can be filled on the fly if you run low on coolant.

Hi Steve, What material do you use for the grit collection hose on your tool & cutter grinder? I've got a surface grinder whose previous owner used aluminum hose for its grit collection, and I'm rather unsatisfied with that: tears much too easily & doesn't flex well. I've considered plastic & silicone hoses, but I've been a little concerned about the risk of fire, with all those sparks getting sucked into a non-metal hose. Have you ever had any issues with such things? Thanks
@SteveSummers
@SteveSummers 5 лет назад
Mine is cheap boat hull vet line. Not good for heavy sparks but works well for the cutter grinder. I have had a few holes in it where the heavy sparks hit it. I just cut out the bad section and keep going. Cheap enough to replace often. The real good hose it very expensive.

When you ground the end of your cut off blade you feed across from the heel side then entered work from the heel side with the table towards the cutting edge. As the wheel moves toward the cutting edge steel gets hotter and is likely to burn edge by the time it reaches the cutting edge. Wheel should enter from the cutting edge side and move toward the heel. It should burn less. I don't if you know what I mean. Another way to say it is to grind against the cutting edge.

We have Black Widow spiders here in Australia but we call them 'Red Backs. Got bitten by one three times a couple of years ago... Or maybe I got bitten once by three of the little buggers. Anyway, I didn't feel the bites but a couple of hours later I noticed a dull ache on my arm where I got bitten. About midnight that night the arm felt like someone had been whacking it with a steel pipe. Ached like hell. Here's a hint if you ever get spider bit and you think it might be a widow bite. The envenomation site might turn slightly pink and might be slightly swollen but the dead give away is that the envenomation site will sweat.(perspire) Generally speaking and unless the temperature is pretty high, only the site where the bite occurred will perspire. (Hyper hydrosis) If you happen to be near a medical facility and for a bloke about your size, treatment is usually one ampoule of anti widow antivenin administered with a bag of Hartmann's solution, a bit of phenergan for the pain and maybe a bit of cortisone. Otherwise you night try rubbing the bite with a bag of frozen peas or maybe some of that corn you have growing down the back if you've shucked and frozen it. Never tried it but supposedly, the cold denatures the venom a bit... Cheers.

Our "spider to watch out for" is the Brown Recluse. If the bite is untreated, it develops a nasty rotten core, then spreads. A trip to the doctor at least, steroids are usually involved in keeping the affects to minimum. When winter shirts/jackets come out of the closet, best thing to do is shake them out, turn the inside out (without putting your arm in the sleeve) and shake them out again. Have big heavy footwear on and be ready to stomp if a recluse hits the floor.

Nice job on the parting tool. Great help in the shop, lucky guy. But you should ask what does she want?

Great grind job. You make it look easy. Of course you have a great cutter grinder. Love your video's. How long have you been doing metal work. I know that you said that you are self thought.

About 5 years off and on. Seriously trying to learn machine work for about 2 years. Even with a cutter grinder it takes a while to grind the tough HSS. I'm still real new to using the cutter grinder so I could just be slow;-)
