Part 3. A great accessory to add more versatility to the metal shaper.
This handy tool post grinder attachment for the metal shaper has worked really well on a couple of operations during its own construction. It will be a valuable asset to improve the versatility of this great simple machine tool.
Up to completion I have only used angle grinder discs on it, but as you will see it performed excellently. Using the proper graded grit grinding wheels when needed should give even better results. CAUTION check the maximum RPM of the grinding wheels before mounting. This is no where near competing with a dedicated surface grinder but for the occasional job and if limited work space or funds is an issue it could be your savour.

Hi Matty. Thanks for commenting. I haven't made it to be a full on every day grinder. Its only a get me out of here quick if needed. Thanks Tony

not a bad idea ...i like the fact that it shoots most of the sparks out and not much in towards the shaper
@eyuptony
@eyuptony 2 года назад
Hi Neal, that was intentional for that reason and its also easier to make an extraction shoot for it as it won't interfere or hit the main machine body on the return stroke. Thanks for commenting. Tony

Very Good 👍 Finally got to see it in action. Works like it should. My main interest in watching this series of video's, was seeing IF and How well it worked. Seems you are Very Happy with the result. I guess we will call that a job well done 👍👍 2 Thumbs Up. One for effort. One for making it work. Now i need to find another video of yours to watch 😉 Thanks for taking the time to put this series of videos together. Always more effort that what it seems All the best. Peter 👍

You might need one for your shaper, one day. Hope this has helped as a starter for you to improve the design. Much appreciated Tony. (That thing lol....)

Just watched this mini series and think I'll add the project to my list. I'm on the lookout for a surface grinder (used) but here in New Zealand not many come up for sale and the ones that do people either want to much money or they are worn out. Oh well will keep looking. Regards kevin

I have to say I've never thought of doing a set up like that on my shaper, put grinders on millers and lathes and used grinding attachments on a jig borer. I have to say brilliant, great job. really enjoyed that setup. a real get you out of jail set up. is that an 18" shaper looks a nice machine have you got any videos of your workshop looks like a good-sized miller in the background , and Happy New Year Tony.

Great series Tony, extremely creative. And of course it's interesting. Just need to be super careful with the grinding dust getting into the shaper ways. You had everything covered up like you would with a toolpost grinder on a lathe. Good idea! I'd be paranoid about it. If you have a surface plate, I'd love to know what kind of accuracy you can get when squaring up a block (or whatever). It would come down to the angle grinder bearings, I guess. I wonder if upgraded precision bearings of the same size might be available for a quick upgrade in precision? If you think it's necessary that is. One big question springs to mind: Why does your grinding wheel have an oil weight rating - 15W40?! :-) I will certainly tune in for the shaper toolpost spanner build, and the dust extraction hood. Cheers Tony, Craig

Hi Craig Thanks for watching. It will be more than accurate enough for what I need. I also wondered about the digits on the grinding wheel. Maybe its a product code?
@infoanorexic

I had something similar to this in mind, except my idea has the grinding wheel as flat to the work as possible. I've thinned down some items with an angle grinder before, and managed to hold the precision and maintain the surface ground look. Use a new wheel, keep it cool, get on it quick and get off it quick. Dangerous, though. It would be all too easy to condition your fingers for safe cracking that way, but at the time that was all I had.

Hi Diggerrop. Great idea and probably faster for larger areas. I needed this to do a narrow flat about 18 mm 3/4" wide initially though. Thanks Tony
@infoanorexic
@infoanorexic 4 года назад
@@eyuptony I got a surface grinder that I'm slowly getting acquainted with, so I'm not compelled to try it any time soon. Your setup makes more sense for the narrow work, though. Mounting a hacksaw to the shaper head is one old trick that has benefits. It's not fast, but with a careful setup and start, you can get some surprisingly accurate cuts.
@eyuptony
@eyuptony 4 года назад
@@infoanorexicSounds like you'll get perfect cuts with no wobble. I'll keep it in mind.

Hi Tony, Just found your channel. Great way to use an angle grinder on the shaper. Umm could work as a surface grinder ??? Regards MachineNZ
@eyuptony
@eyuptony 4 года назад
Hi MachineNZ. It will get you by if your stuck depends on the precision your working to and how accurate your shaper is. I have only been using the angle grinder wheels so far, it functioned as well as I expected. Thanks for viewing and commenting Tony
