CT... Great progress! She's a little crispier than she looked last episode! I'd make one recommendation on your bracing. I'd run a piece of angle from the top of the windshield post down to the back of the brace you have welded in. Then I'd run a piece from the rear lower corner of the door opening to the middle of the brace you have welded on. The 'X' will keep the door opening from moving around on you. It's a huge pain to re-square a door opening that has moved. My Ghia taught me to weld that opening as stiff as you can weld it BEFORE you cut everything apart.
Leave the inner longitudinal in place as you replace the outer. Even though the inner has rust, that will help keep the car square. Once the outer is in place then cut out your floor pans and inner longs. Keep the tunnel in place until the floor pans are done. Try to save the tunnel. Finding a good donor is going to be very difficult.
Yeah….just gotta keep pushing. And BTW you don’t have a boss standing over you looking at his watch, tapping a foot. This is the most drama dramatic CT video to date! And that is a compliment…..a little trick to make us want to watch the next. I was sweating bullets and trying to manage my acid indigestion!
Hi CT, next time on the undercoating, try using a heat gun and a flexible metal scraper. Comes off quite easy. Once you have most of it off, you can clean up the remaining residue with brake cleaner and a rag. Love this series.
My anxiety level has been pegged watching these vids. You have some major cajones my friend. Love the 914. Had one when I was in high school and sold it to pay a debt..... regretted ever since
CT I hope this one is worth it. That’s a heck of a lot of metal to replace. Good luck with whatever you choose and I’ll be watching from the other side of the continent.
Just realized that I have been following you for four years. It has been a long ride, with one thing in common: no finished projects. I think you deserve to be honored with a diagnose. It could be called "CTism", and be described as "Fear of finishing projects". I say this with "tongue in cheek", but feels partly true :) Is the guy that bought Rusty making or people buying one of your other projects on RU-vid? Would be nice to watch some of the cars I have followed on here beeing finished. ;)
You should take us along when you go out and find donor parts, because that's part of the fun. Really good camera angles when working with the 1/4 panel and rockers. You'll make it, just keep going.
Just keep focused on the Heat channels. get the one side built out then the other. Then do the floors it will all come together pretty quick. The patches are the time robbers.
Looks like so much work and you discover more problems as you go. I’m not sure if I could stay as positive as you. I’m enjoying the progress this is one of my favorite models next to the 928s. Keep up the good work.
I guess what I would need for the bodywork of the Porsche is some sort of explosive view or plan of the 914's body, in order to gather some ideas on how the different metal parts and plates are shaped. And let Wolfsburg West take care of that.
CT and a sawzall. Every 914 Halloween nightmare! May want to add some more bracing before going further. Great content! Looking forward to the next video.
CT Good afternoon You have been doing great. Everything will come out fine. It looks like is is going to take longer and a bit more complicated, but You will manage to finish it great. Many of us are with You. Perhaps nobody thought this much rust could hide so far. I am pretty sure You will handle it
When cleaning my Ghia, I found that a thin less aggressive knotted wire wheel removed all that junk extremely easy and much quicker. BTW, that steel bar you made to scrape stuff off, you need to patent it and sell them…..
Hey CT....still say strip the crap out of it and get it chemically dipped....it will pay off.....also once all the metal and paint job is done....fish oil the crap out of it....use a long fine tube and spray inside all the tight spots and inside the guards etc and leave it out in the hot sun for a day or two.....it will def stop or slow down rust from returning.....keep up the great work ....cheers from Syd Aus🤜🤛🍻🍻
CT If you were doing this again, would maybe a chemical dip/strip and rust converter have helped, considering it was a flood car? I don’t know how $$ that is, but thinking water was everywhere and that means rust is in places you will never get to. Just wondering….
Holy crap CT! Peeling back the layers of this one isn't looking good. Yep, stick to the driver's side before doing anything else on the passenger side. Good luck finding all the parts! Look forward to seeing this come back together.
Just started watching this segment. The sail had foam insulation inside from the factory. That captured moisture and caused rust. Missing on yours so someone was definitely in there before. Also, that tight area inside the fender behind the door handle recess was loaded up with seam sealer at the factory. With no fender liner, the rear wheels tossed decades of water and road debris up there and it's a breeding ground for rust. Karmann must have learned lessons on what not to do in auto body design.
Genuine question, at what point do you say “It’s too far gone” and scrap it? Assuming the ROI exceeds cost of parts and labor of a project like this, do you use that as a measure of when to stop/continue? I’ve seen mint 914s and do not know where this one will end up from now and between, but rest assured I will be here watching and supporting your decisions in the process. ✌️
I bought the car for $1,500....If I invest $5 to $10k in parts "metal, interior, rubber, primer, paint, etc" and do most of the work myself it could be worth 2 or 3 times my investment if it's done well. This does not included labor cost. This is a learning experience for me and I'm having fun. Hopefully this one will turn out really nice.
I just got my hands on one of these, so what I am guessing is that the body and frame is all welded together. So you can not replace body panels by unbolting them, this is going to be a learning experience. lol I was hoping to been able to replace the body with Carbon Fiber parts, after 3D scanning the car.
Hey CT Enjoy the videos you put out. Were you planning on attending Bug jam 11/11/2023? You mentioned that you might bring the Bug. Nice to meet you if you were. Cheers JC
You ought to have that beast dipped and rust treated. It would save a lot of time and stop all rust. You’ll end up with a solid longer lasting car. The main thing is stop the rust and clean it up for easier repair.
Sometimes its better to do it bit by bit instead of cutting out all the rust all at once, the get loses structural integrity and the rusty panels help with measuring, replicating and positioning the new panels.
Estos bonitos coches casi siempre están igual de podridos. Me gustan, pero suponen demasiado esfuerzo para lo que en realidad son. Quizá merezca la pena en un seis cilindros, pero son muy raros.
I am lucky because I live in Tucson. Cars do not rust here, they just wear out. My 1985 Mercedes was delivered in Tucson and has zero rust. I think you're off to spending too much time on this car. Can you have it dipped to removed all of the paint?
that's intimidating how bad it is, but you have lots of metal work to look forward to, or we have lots of content to see!! lol, good luck will be watching this one, you did awesome on the bug and that was almost as bad!!
