In the International Music Video Awards January 2024, Money Game Part 3 won Best Music Video and best Director of a Music Video (Ren & Samuel Perry-Falvey), and they were also commended for best Cinematography in a Music Video
That’s my thinking too - since Ren calls it a “hostage hood” (or was it bag?) in the behind the scenes. But I think it also represents being blind to what is happening, and maybe a “money bag” too. Ren likes his cake in his lyrics and I think this is one of his layer cakes. :)
The only cut is when the camera goes behind the wheelchair - they had to put a cut in there, because the next scene had the rain, and they only had one shot at that, and they also needed to move his mic because he was about to take the suit jacket off. Everything else was one take. And I agree, I do think that you and Ren have the same philosophy regarding money: it's not wrong to make money, but it's wrong for money to become more important than people. I'm glad you enjoyed this, I figured you would be appreciative of the lyrics for this trilogy!
@@suz9451 Both Ren and Sam have said that the only cut is when the camera goes behind the wheelchair - there's a great BTS that Wolf Johnson did, if you're interested in seeing more about how it all came together!
@@yilomina2047yes was so nice to see Wolf Johnson's behind the scenes. And then have it match up with some of Connor's posts on instagram. I think Ren also would have needed to not risk multiple unnecessary "rain scenes" getting so much IV treatment. He likely had an IV catheter in ready for if needed IV fluids, common for dysautonomia, but even if had any IV treatment within 48hrs prior he would have been told by doctor to not get site wet unnecessarily. One more reason to add a cut there.
This is live one continuous shot till camera goes round back of the wheelchair so they could move the mike from lapel to tie. Also could only get suit wet once as it was the only one he had! Good reaction ❤
I recommend his band "The Big Push", their official video for "I Shot the Sheriff/Road to Zion/Hip Hop" - I totally get what you're saying about part 1 and 3 feeling more like musical theater than just music. "Ren, King of the Bards" xD I freaking love it, lol.
Yes, I love Power! Ren said he and Sam had so much fun just spending time in the car driving around doing that video. Very upbeat but still has the Ren style message.
Check out The Big Push! Rens old band. (2years or so ago) They’re all great musicians and made great music. Busking on the Brighton streets. There’s a set they did that includes a War pigs cover, I shot the sheriff/road to Zion/hip hop mashup, Watch out(an original), paint it black cover, they are all separate videos fyi. Also check out their Wade in the water/nina Simone/trouble so hard mashup….the list goes on
YEAH. "BACK ON 74/MESSAGE IN A BOTTLE". 😉 Every time Ren makes a new song I say "This is my favourite song now". But the thrut is they are all my favourite songs. 👍 😅🇳🇴
OK, You might wanna avoid Su!cide, Freckled Angels, How to be me, and For Joe. Joe was Rens best friend growing up, and he unfortunately un-alived himself. Rens songs are amazing on this subject, but really tough if you have own experience.❤️
My take on the bag head is that those with the bags on are specifically those who are trapped within the Money Game (aka the system of capitalism) who don't recognize that they're hostages to the system they also can't help but support. This video is done in 2 shots. There is a single cut hidden in the pass behind the wheelchair that was inserted specifically because they only had a single shot to get the section with the water because Ren didn't have any other clothes, so if they got it wrong, there was no second chance that day. Ren is a perfectionist with a love of 1-shots. This is one of his most ambitious and actually won awards for both Ren and Samuel. You should totally check out the BtS videos that were taken by TheWolfJohnson, who traveled to the UK to document the process. If you really do enjoy the technicality and insanity of a large-scale 1-shot video, then you should definitely take a gander at his video for Animal Flow. It's really something else. ❤🔥
Next Ren song should be "What You Want", it's a fun one Great reaction to MG3, so happy you took the time to really check it out and talk about the subject and the video. I agree, it's a performance piece more than a song! 🤩
Suicide and For Joe are brilliant and cathartic, but may be difficult if you've been personally touched by topic. No one is obligated to react to them publicly (or to listen to them at all). ❤
I love how you open up reluctantly and then have a great conversation and show your vulnerability’s!! It’s powerful stuff - keep pushing on YT - you will get where you want to if you keep it real!!
To answer you re next track Maybe one of his band The Big Push A cover or one of their original ones. All amazing. Love to see you do Heretic or Ready for You (earlier stuff)
Jimmy's end was not surprising. His whole life was moving forward, like the piano, in an increasingly manic pace. Once he was forced to stop, he was left to observe his own wale of destruction. An entire lifetime spent destroying lives for what? The emptiness he was left with. He couldn't Not something easily lived with. Edit to add: if you haven't done it already and i just missed it, Chalk Outlines with Chinchilla
watch the Knox Hill interview with Sam, Ren's partner. This was done with people that have the same visions. But Ren is in all of it , from camera angles to wardrobe his OCD is strong . lol. But in Knox's interview all you are asking here he answers.. It was done 4 months ago
Money used to be transported in cream canvas bags like the ones they use here . I think the symbolism here is that the money bag like the money game distorts our vision not only of the world but also of ourselves.
Really enjoyed your reaction! With your background in metal, I would definitely suggest The Big Push cover of War Pigs next. The Big Push is Ren's busking band, and you will see a whole new facet of Ren in that one (he has quite a few facets - not just two, but going from MG3 to War Pigs will take you from one end of the that talent spectrum to another faster than you can say "h*llfire"!
You noticed the 100.000 dollar piano. Ren lend it from a music store and they drove it to the barn so he could do this video. In @RenMakesMusic you can see behind the scene his rehearsal of this song. 😊
I know that ending is a bit controversial. I think Ren intended it to be that way, gets people thinking and talking which I think he loves to do that. As you continue to explore Ren’s discography you will see that the subject has touched his life too. Enjoying your reactions. Don’t forget to check out The Big Push. This is a busking band Ren was a part of. I think you will get more enjoyment and identify better with this side of Ren. Because you love metal, I think you should check out The Big Push cover of War Pigs kind of a mashup to take a break from Ren’s serious side. ❤️❤️❤️
Ren had a very close friend die from suicide. He's written songs about it and references his friend a lot, of course it affected him very, very deeply. Also when he was bed-bound with excruciating illness & pain for a couple of years, he says or alludes in his songs that suicide crossed his mind. There's a video from 11 yrs ago when he was at his very worst, saying he couldn't take it too much longer, crying, it's gut wrenching. I'm sorry you've experienced that loss, also.
Ren is a boss, loving your reactions but if you want some amazing vocals and slick af guitars check out his band The Big Push they do I Shot the Sherrif/Road to Zion/Hip Hop, WarPigs by Sabbath, Paint it Black and their own song WatchOut in one busking set (Rens wearing red suspenders) .separate vids but all bloody fantastic 😊
I feel like a lot of us who find ourselves gravitating towards Ren basically have the same thought, it's just thanks to him unapologetically presenting the subject through a medium as powerful as music, we are getting to learn how many there are of us & just how powerful that could be in shifting the balance. That hit you hard at the end, try take some time for a pure joy one, War Pigs cover by his band The Big Push works for me every time 🤘🏻
I enjoy your reaction here. I was chuckling right along cuz we can’t take things too seriously. Yeah, REN’s songs make me think as well. This MG3 was his biggest undertaking with his Cameraman, Samuel Perry-Falvey. This song is on his Sick Boi album and it’s a short/faster track. Thanks for your reactions. Peace out!
Appreciate you sharing your reaction! The behind the scenes video of the making of this video is pretty cool. Neat live one shot (except the cut behind the wheelchair), beautiful camera work. And Ren composed the piano and strings music.... what a cool video. Tough story though. Thanks for supporting Ren! There are a lot of fun ones you should check out.
Great reaction, thanks, yes it's a dark story. Ren like to paint a picture while delivering a message. But there a lot of upbeat, fun stuff too! I love the BTS stuff as well, there is a great one if you're interested. Ren invited another YTer, TheWolfJohnson to travel from Canada to the UK to film the BTS video. I think the funding was crowdsourced. Ren has a shortened version on his YT page, but Wolf has the longer, uncut version. Super interesting.
I find it interesting that the bag over his head looks like the money emoji 💰. I also find it meaningful that the bag is placed over the head because it’s interfering with what you see and how you think.
Hi ! Some Ren's tracks are really funny... Love Music series for exemple. For me, it's important to get the darkness AND the brightness from such a fantastic artist.
Its time for you to do some fun Ren stuff. The Big Push anything. One of my favs, "What kind of woman is this?" ❤❤ Also, Love Music Pt. 1 has a great message based on some of your comments.
Agree with the first comment. We are all hostages but also some of us are blind to it. Some of us finally wake up to the realization of it. Which is what I think happens in the first one when he draws eyes onto the bag. But this is just my own interpretation of it. Thanks great reaction. Edit: Since I’ve come to the end of the reaction I wanted to add that I’m sorry for your loss. Ren has several songs dedicated to his friend that also took his life. I’m not sure if it’d be to difficult of a reaction for you to do. For Joe, Su!c!de and How to be me ft. Chinchilla all touch on this subject. Try Losing it or What you want for more fun upbeat side of Ren.
Next track to get you off the dark side of Ren should be 'Power'. Great review man. 100% the shacking hands is a hint at the album cover for Wish you were here Pink ffloyd, or at least I believe so too. Your the first reviewer I have seen to also think that.
There is a great BTS shot by The Wolf Johnson. Would answer many of your questions. He's annoying like thst, isn't he?😂😂😂 Keeps us questioning everything. Always. The gunshot at the rnd is a missfire. If you choose to see it like that, as i do. I imagine then where Jimmy might turn. There are different options to emohasize in life. Ren has said so many times that when we decide to lift each other up in community, life will be so much better for all of us.
Genuine reaction and you seem to have the same morals we all have ..just want to earn a decent living ...if Ren is anyone to go by keep pushing ..this was his dream since he was a small kid and he busked (sang on the streets for money) he kept on pushing ..yes do want you love .
Third comment😅 ive subbed . Love Ren, Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin. Play any of them and I'll be back. Ill mention a few more favourites in future too😊 Fred Again Mashup, please.
The bags mean that the story could be about anybody. We all are players in the money game. I think it also can signify that we’re blind to the game, because in the first Money Game, he drew eyes on the guy at one point.
Here's my breakdown of MG Part 3: Its Ren's magnum opus, once again returning to his one shot live performance format with Samuel Perry-Falvey behind the lens, but this time on a grander scale then anything they've attempted to date. Ren has even stated that this video in scale & technicality was his most ambitious project yet. Ren wraps up this trilogy telling us the life story of a single fictional character named "Jimmy" who was raised from birth in the money game mentality & therefore tightening the focus even more on the MG. Instead of just singing the hook "Point the mirror at ourselves, we're all part of this old money game" he chooses to bring the mirror to life & show us through the life of Jimmy's & everyone around him who have their own money bags tied around there heads, exactly where the pursuit of this MG will lead them/us. 🤯🤯 Sir Andrew Lloyd Webber shared Money Game 3 on his Instagram and said Ren is one of the best storytellers he has seen in a very long time. Film maker Jonathan Hiller was blown away by the story, as well as the cinematography & choreography Ren & Sam created. By the end of the video Jonathan say's "This is the genius of Ren, by the end of the video his art transcends into a spiritual realm. Ren's use of negative space is captivating making MG3 utterly transformative". Cheers bruv. 🍻✌
I don't know how old your father is, but I think his attitude is more social than generational. I'm 70 and enjoy much that's available on RU-vid. I couldn't do the reaction thing, I've seen so much music and other cultural stuff in my life and know my own taste too well. I do look at artists I haven't enjoyed over the years, I'll give anyone another chance. But, no matter how often I watch Prince, or Michael Jackson, or Rush, or several other artists who I just didn't get, even when I can see they have talent, I still get turned off by them. There's no rationality behind it, just what makes my brain happy.😊
I really appreciated all your musings throughout this, and I’m really glad that Ren sparked your appreciation for the lyrical side of things - this has been true for a lot of us. (You also explained earlier in your Ren journey that your laugh is just a thing you do - a lot of us get that too, lol don’t worry you’re all good.) You need a break from all this heavy stuff. Check out The Big Push - I Shot the Sheriff/Road to Zion/Hip Hop ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-uSeCuR51rek.html (must be this version of you will probably get yelled at haha) or The Big Push - War Pigs ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-azAD9KE9HKE.html. Thanks for your honesty, much appreciated ✌
I understand the bag on the head as we are all part of the money game but the majority of us are just "someone that doesn't matter". When he removes the bag he starts to be someone in the game that makes difference in the game
Ren has a lot of great music surrounding darker themes, the route at the end of this being one that comes up which he’s also got personal experience with. But, just as many fun, lighter stories and songs. Keeeeeep going! Maybe a lighter one next.
If you want a different take on Ren and a truly spell binding listen to his production skills ( when he started taking music seriously at around 12/13 years old his intention was to become a producer not an artist), I recommend taking a gander at ‘Heretic’. It really doesn’t get as much love as it deserves but if it’s the music that drives you more than lyrics ( although both are fantastic), that where I’d turn to next to see another dimension of his ‘bag of tricks’.
1st timer here. Liked & subscribed etc. on my way to perusing your playlist. Suggestion for Ren, that’s not so heavy check out Losing it Fischer rap retake.
There's only one cut, when they turn his wheelchair and the string quartet is revealed. The rest is continuous & they didn't move any of the set pieces, you can still see the kid on the ground, the waiter with the tray etc, all in the same place, when the camera pans around near the end of the video. It's not a huge crew following him around behind the camera. There's a whole behind the scenes video on the making of this video.
Once you've seen this you don't need to have the video. It plays in your mind as clearly as if you're watching it. Some of the lyrics from MG1... point a mirror at ourselves.... rain rain rain, a storm it comes our way... Turns a saint into a sinner, a child into a killer, His finger on the trigger of a money game. He really tied a bow on it. You should watch the behind the scenes video. It's really interesting from someone who knows nothing of production so it's probably even better for someone who gets it.
"What You Want" is a lot of fun, you should check it out - Beastie Boys style. or "Power." He gets into some of his stuff growing up, but it's upbeat and has a great message. You deserve some fun Ren after all you've seen. 🙂
Ren makes you think. Ren also has friends who have unalived, the subject of several of his songs. It's a lesson for all of us. Check out his live For Joe, and he has a track called Suicide. you have a long Ren journey if you choose to go, I found him 16 months ago, best new artist in decades IMO.
