He tried to sue her for this and he lost because she just said "Dear John is a phrase used from the war when women would write to soldiers to break up, it was called a Dear John letter. So the song could be about anyone." Then after she won the case, on tour she sang "You're so vain you probably think this song is about you." by Carly Simon. Young Taylor was savage.

He was 32 and she was 19. She had idolized him since she was a child and he took advantage of that. She met her idol, was seduced by him, he used her to get his final hit (Half of My Heart in 2009), then broke her heart because he was an emotionally abusive narcissist. He never recovered after this song came out. His career tanked and he complained in the press about the song and called her songwriting “cheap.”

I think it's worth remembering that she was not anywhere near as famous then as she is now, so back then, doing this was ballsy AF!

This is the same person she wrote "wouldve couldve shouldve" about 13 years later. He was 32 she was 19..... Its so heartbreaking to listen to her 13 years later saying " god rest my soul i miss who i used to be the wound wont close" "give me back my girlhood it was mine first" this relationship robbed her of her innocence and she is still grieving today.

I think that’s why I love Taylor, she has the gumption to write and perform songs about whoever, famous or not. John wrote “paper doll” in retaliation to Taylor writing this. In my opinion, there’s no comparison as to which song is more well-rounded.

My impression of Taylor Swift is that she’s an empathetic person. That empathy is what makes her so able to write songs that other people relate to so heavily but narcissists also LOVE to prey on empathetic people. Which I guess means we will have a ton of music inspiration but I really wouldn’t wish healing from narcissistic abuse on anybody. It’s pretty brutal.

You're the first person I have ever seen comment on the change in her face. It breaks my heart when I see videos of her before the 1989/red era, because with each album I watch the look in her eyes get harder and its so devastating.

In Dear John Taylor says “I should have know” throughout the song until the last verse when she changes it to “you should have known” placing the blame on him and off of herself. Then in Would’ve, Could’ve, Should’ve she never says should’ve even though it’s in the title. tying the two songs together. Also, she wrote WCS the night of the 2021 Grammys after seeing him there. I wonder what he did to upset her that night. He’s the worst. He did awful thing to Jessica Simpson as well. Much of what Taylor writes about jessica describes in her book.

so he was 32 and she was 19 during their relationship which is weird enough, and then in an interview when they were dating, they were recording something and during a break she was drawing and john described her as, "looking like a child" which makes it even weirder that one would describe their girlfriend as a child.

I have experienced "narcissistic abuse" as well and are you familiar with Dr. Ramani? She puts out excellent content on the subject among many others on RU-vid. Thank goodness I caught her videos when I did because I was upside down, gaslit to death, and everything! Awesome content! More Taylor pleasezzz. She writes about these terrible people throughout her lyrics. Subscribed and am looking for you on FB. Honestly, I don't hear many good things about John Mayer these days, just like Kanye. These people often blow up their own lives because they burn people out and that reputation remains.

I dated a Narc for 8 years! Was rescued one day by her "best friend" of 20 years (she treated that friend like shit also!) Now that friend and I have been dating for almost 4 years and are still VERY much in love! Ive had more than my fair share of abusive relationships (I dare say possibly more than Swift!)! and this one has been SO different! Im SPOILED! Im not always getting told Im fat or Im a lazy slob because I have struggles with crap. Instead they tell me its ok and holdme when I cry! I HATE when people are all Swift just dates people to write songs! or shes played the field to much or any of the other garbage people/the media love to throw at her! As some one whos been there with SO MANY guys My real conclusion is people just SUCK! and Im just a poor no body compared to Swift! I can imagine her money and fame make dateing THAT much harder! I mean how do you know if they love you for you? or for what you can give them? I honestly feel for her! and her music has helped me heal SO many broken hearts!

I dated a narcissist on and off for about 2 years. Ended up having to move across the country to get away from him - that sh*t is no joke and really messes up your brain. It’s been 4 years since we broke up the last time, and after some great CPT (cognitive processing therapy) and a lot of time I’m a much stronger person today because of it. Now that you've dived into Taylor and listened to her various genres, I hope you agree with me that the next genre she needs to knock out of the park is classic rock - think Joan Jett, Pat Benetar, Heart - ooh, I can dream, can't I?

He totally groomed her! They dated officially when she was 19 and he was 32. But he slit in to her DM’s way earlier asking her to do a duet with him. He didn’t contact her label or her manager, but her directly. He was her idol. They recorded the song and then they went on tour together, then they started dating “officially”. John called her a child in several interviews. Talking about seeing her sitting on her knees drawing.. Before Taylor he dated several famous women. When he and Jessica Simpson broke up he went on the radio bashing their sexlife (slut-shaming her) her career was never the same. She later wrote a book where she described their relationship and there are many parallels to Taylor’s descriptions of the relationship with John. He tried to sue her for both Dear John and Would’ve could’ve should’ve. This relationship really damaged her! We obviously don’t know exactly what happened but for Taylor to 13 years later write a song about this relationship writing that the memories still haunt her in her sleep, that she can’t free herself from the pain, that the relationship changed her and made her take wrong turns that she wouldn’t have taken if he hadn’t broken her in the way he did. Saying she regrets him all the time. The pain, hurt and anxiety in the music, the lyrics and in her voice..

Then a year after John, Jake G ripped her heart apart.....All Too Well.

He called this “cheap songwriting” and then wrote Paper Doll as a response song…. Which was ridiculous. Last year on her Midnights album she followed up with Would’ve Could’ve should’ve which she wrote when she was the age he was when he dated her.
