I love how Taylor talked in an interview about how an ex once reached out and wanted her to promise not to write a song about him.... well it makes the line "The girl in the dress wrote you a song, You should've known" like a 1000 times funnier. 😆
John couldn't win the court case cause, Dear John is actually a noun informal. Any letter terminating a relationship, is a dear john. A letter from a woman informing her boyfriend or fiancée that she is ending their relationship is a dear john. He should have known that Taylor always wanted to be an English teacher.
A Dear John letter is an actual thing that women used during World War II to break up with their boyfriends overseas. So the song isn’t Dear John Mayer the song is a Dear John letter to her former boyfriend.

I love watching these old videos where you can see the anger and hurt and then you watch her perform it live at the Eras tour and just the personal growth in her saying she’s singing this song because she’s proud of it and the whole vibe is different. You should watch if you haven’t already!
fun fact! if u have ever heard a john mayer song then yk what i’m about to say. if u listen closely to the guitar riffs in the beginning and when they have solos, it is very very similar to john maters guitar style which makes the song 100000 times better.

John is a very good guitar player. The riffs included to sound like his music are similar to his song “Gravity” which came out around 2006. His song in reply was really lame. Then she came out with Would’ve Could’ve Should’ve when she was 32 (same age as him when he dated her) as a look back on this relationship and put it at track 19 (the age she was) on her album. It is a very good song as well. Hits with deep regrets from Someone who was a teenager at the time but is grown now.
