I appreciate that it's an intentional, stylistic choice, but currently (who knows, I am prone to change opinion semi-easily, lol) it's a choice I am not a fan of
@@dyver123 He uses auto-tune not to fix his voice, but to make it sound like a synth or an instrument - If you listen to the whole album you'll understand more..
I don't know if anyone's mentioned this in the comments. But just to give you some information. The sample of this song was originally called Strange Fruit by Nina's Simone. A black singer from the 40s. The terms "Strange Fruit" is based on black people being lynched and hung from trees Back in the day before Segregation was abolished in the US. So they are literally Strange fruit. It's a very powerful song. Blood on the Leavess represents their Blood on the Leaves, but Kanye flips the song into his own life. There's also a reference when the beat changes to "No Limit" a Southern rap group from the early 2000s. Everyone who listens to rap in the 2000s and would have instantly recognized that beat sample😊
Since I listened to this song the first time I've looked a little bit more into the history surrounding it, and I really, really, really appreciate comments like this! Thank you for letting me know!
To me the auto tune adds emotion, especially if you hear the live version. It sounds like the auto tune is making him sound more emotional and in in pain
@@dyver123 when I first got into Kanye his auto tune on this song and others put me off, but once you’ve listened to enough you start to understand when/why he does it I think? Course you might never warm up to the sound it’s all subjective, & honesty I don’t think blood on the leaves is the best showcase of auto tune vocals, try lost in the world maybe?
The live performance of Blood on the Leaves Kanye did on BBC really shows how the autotune fits this song. It sounds way better live. Should check it out.
Yeezus is probably best consumed as a whole in order, it’s a whole story told over 3 acts, Act1: ego, power, influence and rise to glory, Act2: struggles with drug addiction, family, women and eventual downfall Act3: attempts to break out of his habits, realisation, vulnerability and redemption Blood on the leaves was about this girl who he was having an affair with his wife while he was high, drunk and away from his family. He gets her pregnant, she tells him and goes after his estate. The story doesn’t end with complete closure, down to the last song he fights with his urges to slip back into his old self. It’s Kanye’s movie album, it’s dark, industrial, heavy, emotional, tragic and frantic. As a whole I’d place it at his most underrated piece of work!
This is an old song from 2013 so it's wild to watch you go thru emotions I've been thru many years ago. If you listen long enough you'll hear the evolution of his pain, hurt & excitement. This album came out 6yrs after his mom's death it's like an emo Ye faze. My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy imo is the greatest album of his to date, Donda a very close 2nd for me. Runaway being my all time fav song across every type of music I listen to. Really enjoying watching someone take time to try & feel this artists melodies. He's changed completely since this album an the next few to follow, constantly evolving, making bigger & better sounds.
Hi man, love your kanye reactions! I think you'll like those Yeezus songs too: Black Skindhead, New Slaves (especially outro), Hold My Liquor (my personal favorite, also great outro), Guilt Trip (you'll like this one). 808s and heartbreak is my favorite Kanye's album and I hope one day you'll react to it in full since it's an experience, one of the most influential albums in hip/hop, also 10/10 for me, same as Yeezus. Also, not sure if you're familiar with Playboi Carti, but his latest album Whole Lotta Red is influenced by punk culture, you can give it a try too, basically first 2 songs are the hardest. Love ur reactions
yo ur the best reactor ive seen ,, im not searching for reactors neither. but youre the first to seem genuinely BOUT IT. you love the music and understand chords and musical aspects to it. iiiii fux with rap for lyrical content but i understand the beat is like the canvas the lyrics lay over . i aLso understand that beat,, is somebodys product. iiim looking for lyrics,, but the canvas has to be behind it . YoU understanding the musical side ,,, being THRILLED by the musical production. you the real mvp . keep it up homie
Once you listen to a lot of auto tune you start to recognize the difference between those who do it well and those who don't. He does it on purpose for a certain effect and actually adds power imo.
You definitely need to watch the live performance of this on Jools Holland. To me it honestly sounds better than the studio version, especially that last set of vocals at the end. Also consider watching the SNL performance of Black Skinhead, it’s the most raw and aggressive Kanye performance you’ll watch.
check out Kanye's live performance of All Day at the 2015 Brit Awards. All Day is a single in the same harsh and industrial style of Yeezus and one of the best live performances ever imo
the autotune is an effect that fits the story . Yeezus is kinda of cyber punk type setting , so it represents this dichotomy between human and machine . The switches between his raps without autotune and singing with autotune is intentional . Think of autotune like a delay pedal or reverb for guitar its meant to convey an emotion and atmosphere
I get your not a fan of auto-tune, who is? The difference is how Kanye treats it more like an vocal instrument..I find it breathtaking and could not image the song any other way.
Bound 2 and Black Skinhead are two songs off this album you would enjoy. Bound 2 is more of a classic Kanye sound, chipmunk soul sample with funny lyrics and amazing production. Black Skinhead is more like this one, really in your face heavy instrumentation
You should definitely check out Kanye’s No More Parties In LA. It’s one of his best imo, it also has a fantastic Kendrick Lamar feature. It’s also one of the few times Kendrick has been out-rapped. It’s a great throwback to Kanye’s style of rap in his early albums but features the great production of his later work.
i think its a bad streotype from the rock/country community about autotune, i used to have that same opinion as a young teen but once i started listening to more and more different genres hiphop and others ive grown to enjoy autotune when used right.
1st video of yours I’ve seen, love the honesty and musical insight you give. You should react to the live bbc performance of this track, it might help you see the autotune in a different light.. Also, you should do Hold my Liquor next! It’s from the same album 🤙🏼
I would be interested to see what you think of On Sight from the same album lol. I didnt like most of Kanye's stuff at first (especially the autotune!) but it really grew on me after a while.
The song isn’t about lynching, but the sample of the girl (Strange fruit by Billie holiday)on the chorus is a song about lynching. Kanye is talking about talking about a relationship with a mistress while having a wife and how cheating backfires. Makes the song more beautiful, dark and twisted
As Eminem says: ''Let's take it back to straight hip-hop and start it from scratch''! thats what he's talking about.. Beastie Boys-Paul Revere with lyrics
You need to look at the auto tune as its own instrument. Because kanye transforms his voice into an instrument with autotune and makes in a way a autotune solo, like a guitar solo
I'm a metalhead and Kanye is the only rapper I truly love and I have no idea why. Also check out Hell Of A Life.. it references Iron Man by Black Sabbath!
I think the thing you have to understand with Kanye when he sings with auto tune, he’s using it as an instrument instead of hiding it to hell him sound better. There’s even a song he had an auto tune “guitar” solo.
I used to be with you on the autotune opinions. I truly thought it destroyed otherwise beautiful songs. Looking back, I feel like this song wouldn't hit the same without it. Along with a lot of other songs, I feel like Kanye has used to autotune as another instrument, more than simply making his voice sound robotic. I feel like it brings a certain emotion by itself that a regular voice can't always capture. I think done artistically anything, including autotune can sound amazingly beautiful. 808 & Heartbreaks is a fantastic example where the autotune brought out his pain and emptiness, the way a classically trained voice simply couldn't. Cheers for having an open mind though, this is my first video of yours and I am excited to see the journey and how some of your opinions may change with time, while also learning from your insight. Have a lovely week!
I'd say Kanye and RZA from Wutang were the first to start making complicated beats, melodies, and change ups. RZA had complicated beats but they still didn't change much. Kanye is really the one who started to change the game forever. Kanye used a lot of auto-tune because.... well... his singing voice is terrible. Lol.... He been taking singing lessons and so he's a bit better these days.
A lot of people believe that Kanye uses auto tune to cover up poor singing because that’s how most people use it. But for him I really believe he uses it as an instrument to sound different compared to others, he doesn’t try to hide the use of auto tune, he wants it heard, for other artists who use it to make their voice sound better they tried to hide it
Yeah it's clear that he is not trying to hide behind it. Unfortunately the sound of auto-tune (if we're talking about it as an instrument) is rather grating to me. But hey, that might change with time
You should listen to Yeezus. The autotune was more of an artistic decision that fits better with the overall vibe and theme of the album. Great video by the way, I also love metal and you've earned my subscription.
Please listen to Runaway by kanye (not the music video version, the full 9 minute version) that song is a perfect example of why I think Kanye uses autotune. He isn't the best singer and he isn't using autotune to act like he is. He uses autotune as an instrument. The vocal runs he does throughout his tracks that heavily feature autotune are not at all anything he would do dry, he is trying to get that robotic click between note shifts as if it's an instrument. Kanye is not a singer, he is a producer and that is his creative decision to add layers to the instrumentation. (Still loved the reaction though and I understand not liking autotune at first)
The autotune will grow on you, most likely, as you listen to more Kanye/artists that use it in an artistic way. Glad you dug this, sick reaction. You should check out Death Grips. Anything by them. You will most likely love their music, all of their albums are damn near mindblowing. The producer is this drummer Zach Hill, who is one of the most inventive drummers of the last 20 years, used to be part of this math rock group called Hella. On your own, or for a reaction vid, check out Hella's live performance of the song "Been a Long Time Cousin" on RU-vid... You won't regret. Feel free to check out more of their work too, and Death Grips is just as good imo, just in a different way.
Bl.a. Legend Has It.
I appreciate that he is not a singer, and therefore has got to make do with what he's got. However, I still tend to dislike auto-tune 😉 Still a banger tho!
@@dyver123 I used to feel the same about auto tune but I've made a distinction for myself. If autotune is used to make the singer sound "better" as if the autotune was not even there... this is bad... BUT if someone uses it like Kanye has here (and many other songs he does) it's just another instrument used to create texture and emotion, not unlike a talk box used by Peter Frampton or Stevie Wonder. Just my two cents.
@@hyperUFO He has def improved his singing voice on Donda but you can watch any live performance during this era and see he has the vocal range of a two gallon bucket.
metalhead? dude, you are a total flesh-head, i can see it, no metal on your face, except for the weird thing that holds the translucent plates over your eyes, other than that, it's nice to hear your impressions from the music
