Well tbh Kirk still feels he is guilty of Cliff's death, since he was supposed to sleep at the back of that bus, but got to sit in front cause he lost at a game of card with Cliff and Cliff chose to switch seats with Kirk
Its hard to watch Kirk get emotional cause it makes all of us emotional. I hope Cliff is really watching over these guys and being proud of them still moving forward.
Knowing the story of the collision and how they drew cards for who would get the bunk is pretty heavy to think about, situations in life where a single choice could have caused the death of one person or the other, gambling for the bunk not knowing that it was a gamble of who would live and who would die. In terms of the comments, showing emotion is human, not sure why everything has to be posturing, impressing randoms on the internet is so meaningless
@@68state83 well he certainly has fulfilled his dreams, it may be sad that he is gone but he is the best bass player and is resting with his brother. RIP Cliff ❤️
@@anthonyzbikowski529 the thing is, they drew cards for bunks and Cliff won the draw and chosed Kirk's bunk. If theu did not draw for bunks, Kirk would have been gone. No matter what, we would loose someone special.
The support and fans keep him alive. If they went down a different road and were never reminded of him, I bet it would be a different story in general. But the legend, the ora, and the impact of cliff as a musician all around the world, is what causes the energy to come to tears.
@@johnbraucher1499 what the heck is Ora? Do you mean aura? look what keeps a person grounded is not fans and music and money and people that love you that don't know you. People that are there for the long haul, real love family love. While I do not pretend to know Kirk Hammett, I certainly do know people. No offense intended. Personal perspective, I think perhaps you just need to grow.
According to Wikipedia when Cliff's brother died when he was 13, Cliff said to his parents that he'd become the best bassist in the world in his honor, and it's funny because he damn near was. RIP
I feel so sorry for Kirk! He was the last person who had contact with Cliff in the tour bus in Sweden before the tragical death of Cliff Burton. Keep strong bro!
It hits home for Kirk because the night of Cliff's death both of them were arguing about who got a particular bunk bed. So they drew cards and Cliff drew an ace of spades. He then told Kirk he wanted his bunk to which he agreed. Unfortunately, that was the bed which was next to the window that would see Cliff get thrown out of as the bus swerved and toppled over, pinning him down. Kirk knows that if he had slept in his original bunk bed it would have been him that died. Its hard to imagine having to live with that for the rest of your life.
I remember when the news came out about Cliff's death. We had tickets to their next show opening for Ozzy and all of us were just devastated, not because of the show, but because this huge part of the music we loved was taken. Cliff was already a legend in our eyes....way before he was gone. I can't imagine how Kirk or any of the guys felt and continue to feel. Kirk especially. Wow.
Rob had no match at the auditions. The man is a bass beast and he plays Cliff´s basslines, riffs and solos in an awesome way. Cliff did give you a thumbs up Rob! we all are
My thoughts on the 4: You can tell Rob is trying to be as respectful as he can be, and his story was a nice little uplifting part of this. James doesn't want to delve into his feelings too much. He's likely one of the people who grew up with the whole "emotions are stupid" environments like many people his age have. But he feels for the loss of cliff. Kirk gets super emotional due to all the traumatic memories surronding Cliff's death, and rightly so. He had the most direct trauma related to this event. I can tell that Lars is emotional about this despite hiding it very well, as well as distracting himself well by talking about Ray.
Kirk is such an honest cool stand up guy. through all the Metallica shit he's the one who's not been changed he's still the same guy just living and enjoying the dream. I salute ya man.
I got chills when Rob said “I won’t let you down, I promise”. He’s absolutely kept that promise. He does Cliff’s legacy such justice, especially with Orion. Cliff would be proud, Rob. We all are.
Man, if Cliff's loss hurts us the fans as much as it does, I can't even imagine how much it hurts James and the gang. God rest Cliff's soul. The greatest bassist in in Rock and Metal period.
Kirk is such a Nostalgic guy!! It's been many decades and even now makes him cry talking about his lost friend. Love you Kirk and your immortal deep friendship.
I've been a fan of Robert Trujillo's bass playing since he was in Suicidal Tendencies. To hear him say "Cliff if I get this gig I won't let you down I promise", just makes me respect him more as a person. That is a great promise to make.
You know, I consider Cliff and Kirk two of my biggest idols. And seeing this just breaks my heart...I'm crying so hard right now. Oh how badly I wish Cliff was still with us.
I didn't but Kirk's such a good and cool guy man, always been the softy of the group and wouldn't have him any other way I'm glad he dosent try to be some tough guy because who he is is much better
If you think about what Ray lost, not only Cliff but his other son also, Cliff's brother, that's a hell of a lot to endure for a parent. God bless his strength.
Its gonna be hard to think that the band right now sits between 50-53, I love these guys man this has been a long journey. Its gonna be even weirder to think that they'll be entering 60's then 70's then its gonna be scary when their dead. Cuz you know?! Its Metallica, they'll never go away you know what I mean? Still guys, as a fan. I still wonder
one day, some day, I want to give Kirk a hug. Dude is an absolute gent. And props to all the guys for maintaining the memory of one of the coolest, stand up, genuine guys who also happens to be one of the best bass players ever.
James's and especially Kirk's reaction really show how Cliff is still there. I'm not talking about spirit and stuff, but about someone who's been so dear to you that he profoundly IS there in you and with you even after more than three decades after his physical death. A hugely authentic and down to earth guy like very few.
If you read about the whole Kirk and Cliff thing with the them swapping beds on the bus. Even though it wasn't his fault, I think he still feels guilty. Every time he's interviewed and they go into talking about Cliff he's nearly in tears.
I connect with Kirk a lot in his expression of emotion and words. My dad had that same calm and fair demeanor that Kirk describes Cliff having. My dad passed away a few years back, and I miss him a lot. I can hear Kirks emotions with every solo. He may not be the most technical player, but he shreds with his heart and that sends chills down my spine.
I know Newkid aint in the band anymore but it would have been cool to hear what he has to say considering he was cliffs replacement and was in the band for fifteen years.
I genuinely feel bad for Jason. Been in the band for 15 years and got shit on by Lars and James. I honestly have a lot more respect for Jason for having to put up with their shit.
You can tell how big an impact he had, in such a short time, just by Kirk's reaction while talking about him. Even after 30 years, he still starts crying.
I never met Cliff Burton, but from what his band members are saying about him, he sounds like an awesome, awesome guy. I'm too young to have seen Metallica during the years between 1981-1986. I wish I did. Seeing Cliff Burton would've been the shit for me. RIP dude. You are missed.
Kirk just made me cry. They all did. The way they talk about Cliff and then how great and amazing Ray is. And you see it in James's eyes, he loves Ray as if it were his Father. This was cool to watch.
Seeing this video just makes me glad. It's so nice to see these guys that I grew up listening to turning out not only to be calmer and wiser but simply to be great guys. The 13 year old me is smiling inside! :)
Cliff is an absolute legend and it's great to see people recognize his grave talent and originality to this day. Cliff is one of my biggest influences in life🙏 I'll never forget hearing the bass part from Orion for the first time and just being in total shock of how incredibly beautiful and intricate it was. RIP CLIFF🙏
30 years today, i am right there with Kirk, i never met Cliff but grew up watching him play live and he and steve harris are the reasons i play bass! i remember that day 30 years ago like it was yesterday and i too get teared up! the man was a legend before his time and set the bar! to James, Lars and Kirk, i know your hearts are heavy and we all come together 30 years to the day to pray for you and give you strength. Cliff would be proud of this new material, i have heard only two songs but they are the Metallica i grew up listening too. Cliff is smiling and saying keep it up and we will meet again...RIP CLIFFORD LEE BURTON
Definitley caught the feels during Kirks part. Not only was Cliff their bandmate and friend but they looked up to him. They've alluded to it in many interviews and Jason touched on it more directly in his interview with Beez. Cliff was special, it shined through big time with his playing and writing style, and evidently, Cliff the person was every bit as great if not more so than the Major Rager we saw on stage.
Cliff's death hits me harder now that I'm older than he ever got to be and realize how young and in his prime he was. Poor Kirk must think about switching bunks with him on the fateful night every day :(
I lost my best friend in 2018. I was hanging out with him hours before he died. He just got back to work from being on a 2 week Christmas vacation. He said work kicked his butt that day. His arms & chest hurt, he was white as a ghost & just weak. I begged & pleaded with him to go to hospital. It was about 1 am & I was getting ready to go home. He told me if he didn't feel better in the morning he'd go to doctor. I got a call at 5 am that he died of a massive heart attack. I miss him & will never be over losing him. I'll prob take the guilt to my grave. If I would have made the call my best friend may still be here.
I just received the book yesterday and have already finished reading it (til 2am). With every page, I could visualize myself being there and I was born a decade after Cliff passed. Being the huge fan I am, it was hard to take a break from reading this as I wanted to know everything. This album had such a tremendous amount of influence on me. When I first heard the title track (especially Kirks solo) it made me pick up the guitar. I can't help but think that with this book, I own a piece of history. I've been an instant fan since 2009 and there were a few things in the book that I didn't even know. Maximum respect to Metallica (and Matt Taylor) for putting this masterpiece together. LONG LIVE CLIFF!!!! \m/
Ray and Cliff are two gifts from heaven. They gave us a great life lesson. What a wonderful human beings… a big hug to both of you. I’ll never forget you.
cliff had a very special vibe, so unique. of course that everyone is, but some people set the difference clearly, and cliff was one of those. Tones of respect and love for all.
Tough to watch this but puts a smile on my face at the same time. Remember these guys back in 85', front row. Cliff non stop head banging and James stepping on your fingers and flipping you the bird. Good times. RIP Cliff!
I never realized the connection before: that both Cliff Burton and Robert Trujillo worked with Mike Bordin (drummer, Faith No More) before joining Metallica.
got my copy of the book a couple of days ago, signed by James Hetfield! I made an unboxing video actually, and yeah it's quite something to see back those pictures of Cliff and the band RIP Cliff
As a fan of Metallica from age 17 and now almost 21 cliff had the most impact in the band for me and knowing his personality isn’t there anymore breaks my heart I get kirk getting teary eyed his spirit will live on inside of Metallica forever he was surely one of a kind and this whole band is truest special god bless
