Forgive me Jamel! Please forgive me for saying what you asked us not to say…You gotta hear the studio version. Even if for your own private experience. I don’t want you to miss one of the most intense intros to be heard and the deep deep groove that doesn’t translate very well in this live video. It’s a hair slower, which means it’s still fast as f***
Very true, I just wish the crowd noise wasn’t so LOUD in the recordings of this concert so you can actually hear it better. Don’t get me wrong, I love hearing a loud af crowd, but I wish they also had a direct recording from their amps and kits so we could also listen to just the performance with a hell of a lot less crowd noise if we wanted to. Like how they record their live shows now. I know this was back in ‘89 so it wasn’t as easy, but good damn if they had a recording like that of this concert it would legitimately be the greatest thing ever recorded on audio and there would be absolutely nothing you could complain about it for. Still sounds fucking badass though
@@fiverx2159 I don't disagree with that tone...but compare the two concerts on binge and purge...this show just sounded better and I don't know what they had inline on those Marshalls that year.
I work at a auto dealership in the service dept. Me and the guy next to me are both Metallica fans and when a vehicle doesn't start one of will tell the other it needs a BATT-A-REEEH.🤘🤘👍
Absolute brutality, they were at their prime. They played here faster than the studio version (they used to play even faster, but this is also a pretty decent speed lol). Watched this 3 times in a row and then you put out a reaction to it, what a coincidence.
I have seen Metallica 4 times. First time was May, 1997 in Austin, Texas and the last time was 2019 in Paris, France. They are a great live band and have never disappointed. Thanks for reacting.
@@thefuzzmanI saw that lineup. Both Metallica and Queensrÿche killed it. Also saw them with Metal Church (not the greatest), on the "Evening With" tour (I think that was the Black Album. It was fine) and on the Monsters of Rock US tour. The Monsters show was great.
I was a 17 y.o at that "Monster's Of Rock" concert in Seattle. They blew away the other groups: Kingdom Come, Dokken, Scorpions, and Van Halen!! That night I was hooked on Metallica... AMAZING!!
Was fortunate to attend both nights of this tour in Seattle. It was insane. They actually had large signs outside announcing that they were filming these shows.
@@UncleUncleRj - Not the exact wording; but something to the effect of "Concert tonight being filmed for future release" or something to that affect. It's been almost 33 years, so i'm not sure.
This is an homage to their roots as a band on Battery St. It's also one of their fastest, if not the fastest song they have. This is a the best live version you could have chosen 🤘🤘🤘 Metallica is a top 3 band for me and I just can't get enough. Ever 🤩
Megan "Battery" is my favorite Metallica song without a doubt. What a way to start off the greatest metal album of all time "Master Of Puppets"...the acoustic guitar lulls you into a moment of "okay this is nice" then bam a kick to the face. But I think in my opinion their fastest song is "Dyers Eve" another favorite. Great insight with the Battery info! Cheers!
LOVE this song. It was the first thing that Rob Trujillo ever played with Metallica too at his audition. James asked what he wanted to play, and Rib said "Battery". Shocked the rest of the band big time.
Man!!!!!! You hit it out the ballpark! NOT ONLY did you react to a great song, but also a great live version! ALSO: check 'em out before they debuted their 1st album= you'll *trip out* seeing how young they are (& their crazy/wild energy) you can literally *see* how huge they were gonna get just based on their enthusiasm
@@johngreen5837 yeah, shits funny... I remember on MTV when AliceInChains barely had their 1st album out: they had a camera crew with them at a waterpark... the whole time they were tripping *hard* but what was funny af was when they came to this mom & her kid son! Everyth'g was cool until they little by little freaked them out & you can see the mom's face literally melt into fear/panic... poor kid's probably still in therapy
@@johngreen5837 wait... you actually remember that? Sometimes I feel like I never reach anybody w/ my comments 'cuz I'm an old fogey, but at least you know w/ I'm talk'g about
1986- my 15 year old self lied to my mom and went and saw them right after this album was released. Made it to the front and was worth getting grounded. Saw them many many times since.
You’ve heard the studio version, I hope. This version is for the fans who are very very familiar with that version. Hard to like it in a vacuum I’d imagine.
In my opinion, James Hetfield has one of the best voices out there. Especially in heavy metal. He has a clarity to his vocals that seems to be the same no matter if they are live or in the studio. I will be an ultra fan of Metallica's until the day I die. Hopefully I'll get to see them in concert one day, but sadly, I think that window is closing...
@@Zseventyone sadly it never happened. That show was 100% outta control. Hetfield stopped the show at one point cuz a huge part of the crowd was facing away from the stage cheering for a dude getting a bj in the crowd. He finally got word what was goin on and they all started cheering him on too. It was crazy. The sound wall wasn't even completely built yet either. Um... they were supposed to play til midnight and played psh i don't even know.... 5 encores... they played til after 2 am. Pretty sure they got fined for it and had a lawsuit brought against em cuz it was LOUD and the houses even remotely close were complaining about the cursing. I think they got extra upset when they played So What. They played just about every song they had up until the black album. I think they played 2 or 3 songs off it. The rest was all old school. All their B sides. They played everything. I was 16. I saw ALOT of shows after that. SLAYER was killer but nothing ever topped that experience.
No it's not, It's about the Old Waldorf venue on Battery Street, which was their home venue when starting out, and it was also home to many other Bay Area bands and that whole scene.
Great reaction. You literally can't go wrong with reacting to anything from this show. One of the greatest performances captured on film. Next up I recommend "whiplash". I dare say it's even faster than battery!
Became a Metallica fan in 1986 when I was 11 when Master Of Puppets came out. Fast forward 31 yrs to 2017. I had never seen Metallica. Took my 16 yr old son to see them for our first time. We took trains and taxi's from Long Island, NY to Philadelphia. Spent $400 on just trains and taxi's. I'd do it all over again. One of the best live bands I've ever seen.
It's unusual for an entire genre of music to fade away, but Metallica can always rest assure that they've permanently gone down in history as the greatest heavy metal band.
I was 20 when this show happened. I saw them live at the opening of the EMP. I’ve been listening to Metallica since Kill em all & they are to this day my #1 favorite band. Please do some reactions to anything from the S&M album if you haven’t already. With the SFO symphony orchestra backing them up with maestro Michael Kamen conducting. It puts a whole new spin on what an amazing band Metallica is.
Ahhh couldn't wait to click on this one. I had the privilege of seeing them on this tour for ...And Justice For All. I must have been 17/18 in those mosh pits. The energy was unbelievable... good memories
The Kings. I’ve been a Metclub member since 2003z I’ve seen them live 14 times. They surprised me and send me the remastered deluxe Black Album package early. They take care of their fans.
Master of Puppets is one of the best metal albums of all time. Thanks for playing this bro. Hope your ears recover soon from the aural assault. Ha Ha.👍😀🙏💥
You should check out their S&M album. They play with the San Francisco Symphony Orchestra and the arrangements were don by the late Sir Michael Kamen. They won a grammy for their performance of Call of Ktulu!
I saw Metallica in SF in 1988. Monsters of Rock. I was front row center and held onto the retaining wall for about an hour (Hetfield flipped me off) and had bruises on my chest and arms for days.. It was f'ing amazing.
I was 14 when this show went down. This was the tour where I saw them for my first concert at Red Rock in Colorado. They were originally from the L. A. area but that was during the glam metal era so thy couldn't get noticed so they moved up to the bay area where the heavier scene was thriving.
Yes, Battery street in San Fran was were all the clubs were that all these underground bands played. They all knew each other and were part of the Battery "family"... hence "cannot kill the family, battery is found in me." The song depicts the thrash metal scene of the early 80's with vivid mosh pit imagery.
Battery is both an homage to Battery St. in San Francisco, but also a reference to the energy they get from their fans. James sings "Cannot kill the family, Battery is found in me." He's referring to the greater Metallica family including fans and supporters, and how their energy drives him forward.
Funny you mention Jason’s neck. Recent interviews with him he talks about the physical damage he’s done to his body. He recently had a shoulder surgery that almost ended his ability to play. But luckily he regained his ability to play.
I was there. Should have known better than to get up in the thick of the crowd, within 10 feet of the barrier, wearing my glasses. Some dude crowd surfing kicked me in the face. So for three days after the concert I was deaf AND blind.
Same age as my wife and same birthday as my son . So glad to have jammed with Jamel , My 1st. METALLICA SHOW was from this tour . 17 and wide as Hell! Your neck is so right . Shit hurts for days Whiplash 🤘😎🤘
I'm the same age as you Jamal. I have seen Metallica 4 or 5 times. One of my most memorable was seeing them at Woodstock 99. Rode Greyhound from Oakland to NY at 19 years old. What a trip... Keep doing your reviews. You and your family are awesome.
*Metallica got their start in Los Angeles when Lars put an ad in the newspaper looking for other Metal musicians. James Hetfield answered that ad... and so it began*
I first started going to concerts in 1988, and Metallica was on the bill for two of the four concerts I saw that year. I saw them on the Monsters of Rock tour in the early summer, when Metallica was second (?) on a bill that had Van Halen, Scorpions, Dokken and Kingdom Come. I became an instant fan of Metallica that day even though I hadn't heard much of them before hand (I was there for Van Halen). Then I saw them headline in the fall with Queensryche as their openers, and they delivered yet another amazing set. Over the years, Metallica has changed (evolved), and while I'm not always happy with their studio output (mostly St. Anger), they always delivered the goods live, and a lot of that can be attributed to James, who has been one of the best frontmen in metal history. He really knows how to get the crowd into the show and keep them there for 2 hours plus. I have tickets to see them in Atlanta in November, and I am definitely looking forward to it, since some of their best sets come when they aren't promoting a new album.
This song is from their 3rd album Master Of Puppets in 1986, I was 11. Bunch of kids at school had Metallica shirts and patches on their denim jackets. Took the cassette out of my brother's car to see what the big deal was about Metallica. Listening to the acoustic intro of this song (1st song, side 1), I thought to myself, this isn't heavy. Then it kicked in and I was floored and would never be the same musically.
Me too bro' (except in my case it was at Newport News, VA.)- I remember something went wrong with the opening act & were replaced with *JUDAS FKKING PRIEST!*
This takes me way back! I remember going to a concert where they opened with this song and we rushed the stage and got the ride of our lives! I waited for the crowd to disperse to retrieve what was left of my belt and earrings lol. Good times 🤘🏻🤘🏻🤘🏻😂
They did a lot of gigs on a venue that was on Battery street, but this title has many meanings and pretty much all of them fit the song. Battery as an energy source, well, if this doesn't get you out of bed, you are dead. And then there is the assault kind of Battery, which is basically what happens in the mosh pits in their concerts... People get banged up in those. And in the really early days before Metallica moved to SF, they used to play gigs in LA, which had a huge hair metal scene and the hair metal and thrash metal fans were like oil and water. And there was pretty much ambulance at each of their shows as someone was going meet the sharp end of a knife... The SF scene was way more in tune with the wave of New British Metal that Metallica was into. You cannot even feel 5% of how these things play out live on RU-vid... You can hear the crowd, but it is a whole other thing to feel it.
Saw this Damaged Justice tour in their hometown SF...it was insane! I've seen them more times than I can count, all in Bay Area, and the hometown crowd never disappoints!🤘
I got to see Metallica on the Master of Puppets tour when they opened for Ozzy. Hadn't ever heard their music beforehand and when they played Battery my mind was blown, never heard anything played that hard or fast. Ozzy never stood a chance. Best opening act I've ever seen.
My very first concert experience was walking in to the stadium with this song and hair flapping. Metallica opened for Ozzie Osborne and they blew him away. I've been a fan ever since. I highly recommend the studio version of this with lyrics. It's quite cathartic.
You really need to watch them play Master Of Puppets live in Seattle 89.That transition from the melodic bass/guitar part straight into Master Of Puppets is just epic!
