Imagine what it was like back in the 80's.. when this 1st came out.. this was the 1st song on the album.. followed by the title track. Two powerhouse songs back to back as album openers. Ponder the reaction considering many people had never heard anything like this before. Peace

I first heard this album in 1996 at age 11. While I had already heard the Black album and the Load album, which had just came out, I didn't hear this album until a little while later. I bought the tape because I hadn't heard any songs from it and the album cover looked cool. As soon as Battery kicked in after the acoustic intro, I had never heard anything with that much power and energy in my life EVER. It was SO heavy it felt "evil" to me as an impressionable young kid. But of course after a few listens of the whole album, I was converted into a thrash metal fan for life. It was a revolutionary new style to my young uneducated ears. It was the gateway to thrash metal for me, and it paved the way for me getting in the other extreme styles of metal later on. But I still think that noone really surpassed what Slayer, Metallica and Megadeth did in the 80's. All of the big thrash albums of 86' were simply phenomenal. They have never been out-done by any band since those days. I mean I've heard and seen death metal bands like Cannibal Corpse, Morbid Angel, Obituary and Deicide perform live before, but there was just something unique about the raw savagery of early thrash metal that no one in the more "brutal" metal genres can replicate.

The intros are designed to kick songs off on the right foot... Ever pay attention not just to what Battery's intro makes you think of, but what kind of edge the chords and progressions bring with them? It's a relaxed, almost stoic feeling of being at home but the underlying feeling is of apprehension like there's something brutal coming up the street... Battery Street... and Metallica's on the march with the metal militia.

4:30 "Don't think that I should be institutionalized" Alright, you set it: Next Metallica target is 'Sanitarium (Welcome Home)'. EDIT: The bit about your mind not moving as fast as the track... this is something we've discovered and why so many will refer back to the Seattle 1989 concert for reactions/reviews. Why? Because as complex and fast as it is, it's still 4 guys, and seeing them do it while you hear it starts to cement what's going on much faster than listening to the studio cut 10 times. And trust me, you'll play their songs many, many times before you actually catch every little detail.

Live versions of Battery are so powerful because the song was written about the Metallica Family, their fans. Seeing that exchange of energy back and forth from the crowd and the band makes it much more impactful, and being there is like nothing else

Head bang to every other beat, save your neck. Might as well do the rest of Master of Puppets. I would recommend Lepper Messiah or Welcome Home (Sanitarium) next. Or Orion if you haven't done that yet.

Master of Puppets is part of the first Metallica era that was the 80s. First 4 albums were more thrash metal and really started a genre. They started the 90s with the black album that was a lot more mainstream but is still their best selling album to date with something like 15 million +. They've been experimenting back and forth since then between metal and mainstream tracks.

Fun fact. This song is titled "Battery" like the action or crime of battering someone(Aggravated Assault and Battery) to death with a blunt object. It is NOT like the energizer battery. That slips by a lot of people.

Billy if you love Metallica, you gotta check out Megadeth - Holy Wars...The Punishment Due. Your neck will never be the same lol. The original lead guitar player of Metallica was kicked out of the band & formed Megadeth as a plot to get revenge on his former bandmates. To me they are the top 2 metal bands of all time, so it's worth a listen especially if you love Metallica so much.

I think you are describing the condition wrong and I don't think he has it. I picture things all the time while listening to music and I don't have it. It is more about receiving sensory input from senses that are not normally associated with the input IE: when hearing notes or chords in music it also leaves a taste in your mouth that will always be there when you hear the same thing or you may see colours that will become associated with notes and cords in the same way. Please note I am not claiming you don't have it, just that I think your description is way oversimplified for such a complex condition and that I don't think Billy has it based on all the reactions I have seen from him.

This was their last album with their original bassist; Cliff Burton. He was a major influence in the progressive nature of this album. He died in a bus accident while on tour. Metallica hasn’t been the same since.
