Not only is this a devastatingly great song, NOBODY was doing anything remotely like it in the early 80s. They didn’t just blaze a trail, they napalmed it.

Hell no. 80s was the golden era of metal. Particularly in thr beginning of 80s, there were many grest of songs of many metal bands, both mainstream and underground. Metallica was just one of them. 11 years of metalhead experience speaking here.

This song pulled me through dark times in my life. I lost my job, my father, my mother and went to jail within ten months. I was in a state of a black depression, literally in the abyss. When I came down from self medicating I would be a hundred more times depressed. Thought about suicide every day. But now I'm all good.

James had written this song in response to the band losing all their gear to theft. Stolen was a guitar and amp his mother had given him just before she died when he was 16. James had felt because all of his gear was stolen he could not perform anymore and was so devastated thinking about the loss of the gear his mother gave him...
@1982jeepcj8
@1982jeepcj8 8 месяцев назад
James mother gave him that gear to follow his dreams while she was dying slowly and painfully from cancer, she apparently abstained from medical treatments putting her faith in healing prayer. It explains why the loss of that gear hit him so hard and some of the anger and disillusionment at this time in his life. Having lost my mother to cancer while being her primary care giver this is something I well understand.

The most I saw an impact from this song was when I introduced a friend who was into pop and a typical hard guy. I didn't realise they were depressed. I put this track on for them as a "so you think metal is shit huh" track, and saw the emotion pour out of them! It was quite a shock and was a changing moment for them, yes they turned into a metal fan because of if, but more importantly this track made them realise they had huge pent up emotions from his dad's suicide years earlier, and I still think to this day he may not have been still around if this track hadn't broken his walls. Forever one of my favorite songs of all time

Bro... You NALED IT. I'm 50 years old, now, & this song (not to mention the band) has helped me through SO MUCH SHIT. I STILL tear up to it when times are tough for me, like now. It ALWAYS hits hard. James won my life-long love & respect the first time I heard this song. He'll have to do something heinously evil to lose it. Thank God, he's been the man I always thought he was. I say all of that to say that... yes, the fade is very intentional. The music is at its most ferocious, chaotic, part when it fades... as the person feels everything just speeding up & flying out of control, while still fighting. Then, it's left up to us to decide if they fought their way through & flipped the finger to their pain, & death, or, grew tired, finally lost all hope, & gave up. I have always taken the former outlook, personally. And I believe that James still being here, & fighting like the awesome, crazy, SOB that he is, after MUCH MORE pain & suffering AFTER he wrote the song, is all the proof needed. Much love. ✌🏽

I lost my brother in 2010, was just learning guitar then. I delt with the grief by playing guitar the moment I got home from school till the moment I went to bed, for my exams I played fade to black start to finish, note for note and left both the examiner and the other people in the room stunned. I got through those times thanks to this song, plus a few others but this one takes most of the credit. Barely touched a guitar in 5-6 years but when I do, I can still rip this song. I'll never forget it like I'll never forget my brother ❤️ Metallic is bigger than music, it's apart of everyone 🤘

i remember i listened to this song the night my cat that i had raised when he was a little over 6 weeks old, passed away cause he wasn’t strong enough to fight a disease. my urges to cry were so high but my heart stayed strong until school had ended, in which i just stayed in my room for the rest of the day until i found this song to sleep to

Yo boy.... U got the real gist of this masterpiece.... There are layers upon layers for one to ponder upon.... So many facets in the way it starts... Then the lyrics... And the switch over... Then the solo and the fade out at the end.... Words are just not enough... U just hv to listen to it over and over again and get lost again

I heard this song over 1000 times and I just headbanged my life in my bad at 2 am. Metallica will always be the greatest of all time. You definitely should more of them. Enter sandman/ Unforgiven/ Nothing Else Matters and much more... Those are some of their mainstream songs, if u want some true metal: Master of puppets, One, Creeping death, Seek and destroy, welcome home...

The intro is something you can't imagine was written by four 20 year olds. It is as if it had always existed, it is as if it were already in my mind before I heard it the first time.

That’s the thing about art. It is an individual experience even if we all share the exposure. It may or may not speak to you, but when it resonates... [breathes through teeth] *wow*.

When I was in rehab from heroin in the hospital I was listening to fade2black at 4AM lying awake from withdrawals I listened to this song for the milionth time but it struck me so freakimg hard. I didn't know who I was before, who I am now, and life got me to the point of breaking. Listening to this song felt so raw, it's like James has gone through the same thing. I was wondering, so I am not the only one feeling like this? Wtf is going on with James I was thinking... Eventually I felt asleep and got woken up for an iv before breakfast...This song is amazing. Thanks guys for the video.
