Fuck me! The greatest metal band of all time. Hetfields voice probably woke the dead back in the early to mid 90's. He was like a fucking bear. No heavy band will ever come close to what these guys have created. I'll worship this band until the day I die.
What?!! 80's was the day of metallica the 90's gave way to the greatest metal band ever and that is pantera. Phils voice overpowers all, dimebag was 2 notches up on skill from kirk, rex gave the pounding bass line, tho i will say cliff was a better bassist and lets not forget vinny who would and could dominate larz anyday of the week on drums. Metallica was and is great but pantera rules all.
MadLane ill laugh at that lil one. They had way better songs and range. And phil carried on with even better music, down, superjoint ritual etc. All in all its opinions but the pantera shows were way more intense then Metallica shows lol
There were multiple rapes and deaths at this concert. Unfortunately, the Russian police and military at that time did not know what a mosh pit was and took things too far.
A well-known fact among the Polish fans: In the late 80s Metallica came to play in Poland. A couple of fans wanted to meet the band so, despite a very limited budget, they booked a hotel room in the same hotel where Metallica stayed (they didn't know if Metallica stayed there - the hotel was located near the concert venue so they guessed that Metallica would stay there). They decided to wait and see whether the band would arrive. Indeed, they met the members of the band at that very hotel and invited them for a drink in their hotel room. James said that they would come. Now, the boys had to get hold of some booze. At the last moment, they bought some very, very crappy vodka (again, limited budget and supply shortages in Poland at that time). The Polish boys were waiting well into the night...until they heard knocking on their door. It was indeed Metallica, willing to drink vodka with their Polish fans. They stayed with them for some hours and had a good time. Now, that's what I call being cool and down to earth.
Thanks for the Intel. Pretty cool info my friend and another fun fact about the down to earth dudes from Metallica! They were just looking to hang out and have fun like normal people after a concert. Like everyone else.
Lars actually bashed his finger on the snare drum binding at 5:04 if you listen closely, Lars doesn't hit the snare with his stick, he hits it with his finger. He missed the snare because that little pause they do during the song was accidentally cut a bit too short by James, and Lars quickly had to hit the snare while leaning over his drum kit. His finger bled all over the kit for the rest of the show, he still has this snare with the bloodstains still on it. He wrote "Bleedin' for Moscow 1991" as a little reminder of this awesome show :)
@@RM-mf2di than Jasons monster back up vocals,Lars playing the drums like a boss,Kirk shredding the fuck out of his guitar Metallica really headlined Monsters Of Rock 91.
+Josh Hunter There is sort of truth in that.Between quadruple vodkas Boris Jeltsin asked his ex-Apperatjiks what the young people wanted. They answered "probably AC/DC" who happened to be on tour with Pantera, Metallica and for fuck's sake Motley Crue?????
+ Omar Ali No matter how many try to dispute that fact. It will never be spiritually validated. Unless one can headbang their way into death! and make it back to life still headbanging. In sequence with the rhythm of death making that life coincide with the significance of the truth. That we can restore the youth. From the significance of the pain.
Love how James always plays the guitar perfectly while singing. Even though there's many people who are good at singing and playing guitar at the same time, James is the one who actually got me awestruck first as a kid with how he played those riffs that contrasted to his vocal melodies.
+Rabin Miguel They actually asked one great guitarist (cant remeber who was it) is it hard for him to sing and play the guitar and he responded: not really, parts where i play and sing are not complicated but there is one man whose songs i cant imagine playing and singing at the same time and that is james hetfield james is a fucking beast as far as that is concerned :D
+Ivan kovačević Especially those staccato riffs where the guitar is chugging along, have no earthly idea how he plays that well while singing...James is always flawless.
It's years of practise. I am the second guitarist and singer of my band and it's really hard to sing over the complicated riffs I like to produce :D but you just have to always try to do your best. If you want play and sing well at the same time I recommend you to take a complicated riff like Metallica's Jump in the Fire (in my opinion it's complicated, but no hard) and try to pronounce some strange poems at the same time. It's good practise.
At their best. All wearing black, all with long hair. This was when Hetfield was THE metal god. He looked like a lion and had the growl to match....those were the days.
@Goat I think most of this has to do with Hetfield's vocal execution. Early to mid 80's were actually relatively weak for him. His voice was brutal, but very out of tune. '86 till '92 was when he found his godlike form. It took a huge toll, and he lost that edge after blowing his voice out performing like this every other night for 3 years.
The new album is pretty good, for their age now, it wasn't disappointing to me! Two thrash song, few heavy classics and rest was load reload but amped up, and a song dedicated to Lemmy! I been listening non stop to it
for their age there are bands out there who are even older and been rocking it still the same as before, but they still have all of my respect for what they put in metal
One of the best Metallica songs ever. Every riff in this song is hard not to move to. The fucking verse riff is just nasty. It's so simple, but it has a mean groove to it. I think people died this day if I'm not mistaken. The Russian police didn't know this is how fans "release" at a metal show and thought they were rioting. They weren't of course, they were just excited and into the music. Metallica was oblivious to this until after the show, or they would've stopped and explained to officials that this was just normal. At least that was the story I remember. They are still going strong, but this was in their prime...although I saw them in 2009 and was shocked they played for almost 3 hours at a very a high energy level at their age. They've still got it. One of the best heavy bands of all time, without a doubt. I'm sure diehard Megadeth fans would disagree, I think there is room for both bands. I have "Master of Puppets" and "Peace Sells..." in my top 15 metal albums ever. "Ride The Lightning" and "Rust In Peace" are in my top 25. I've just never liked Priest or Maiden, never seen what the big deal was. Black Sabbath are the gods of metal. "Paranoid" - "Sabotage" are in my top 30. I'm biased, I'm a HUGE Sabbath fan...early Sabbath. Nothing against Dio, I just preferred Ozzy. I was thinking a few days ago on the 28th anniversary of Cliff's death, what would Metallica be like today if Mustaine had gotten a 2nd chance, stayed with the band, Cliff never passed away and both were still in the band? Most talented metal band in history? Ok Lars isn't Neil Peart or Dave Lombardo...but still. That would've been a hell of a line up. Egos may have gotten in the way eventually. Sorry for the rant. This was around the time I started getting into heavy music, I was 10 or so...good times.
2:40 always gets me. Come On!!!!! So much aggression. This version is my fav. Metallica at their absolute prime. Jason days. Can we go back in time please ?....
Rare fact: In the end of the song, Lars cut his finger and ran to help, well that time. Kirk and Jason kept doing solos of guitar and bass, respectively
@@alexanderdimitrov9045 ESPECIALLY during this show! He also smacked his finger on the snare instead of the stick during a pause in this song, blood everywhere. ( 5:02 ) when James starts singing again you can hear a thud which shouldve been the snare but he missed because he misgauged the pause
There's something about that shot of the chopper that pans back to the chug of the Harvester riff that is just so... for lack of a better word... HEAVY! That shot just suits the song, and the particular part of the song, so perfectly. It's almost as if the rotor blades are thudding along with the riff. The strange dystopian atmosphere really fits with the mood of the song.
Metallica at their best in front of 500.000- 1.000.000 (+) people, while flags of U.S.A., Great Britain and others were waving in Moscow. No hate, man, just pure rock and heavy metal music despite the brutality of military. Is this the best concert of Metallica? Hell yeah! At this epic concert Metallica were the real headliners in my opinion, not AC/DC.
Leafgreen1976 without a doubt the best version. I can only thank my buddy Trent for faking me to 2 shows. Bear concerts of my life..wicked amd there was no one even close in the day to compare....if I could turn back time...man Ohhh fucken man.
James between Seattle 89 and Moscow 91 was fuckin intimidating. That's metal in the most agressive way. Not only the way they sound, but the way he performe's. Best mode... And Jason, maybe the 3rd in terms of talent between the bass players of Metallica, but live... the best.
When Jason comes in at 1:24, the first time I watched this, I'd never heard Metallica sound like that. Jason was finally mixed in where you couldn't just hear him, he was mixed at equal levels, and it sounded like he was slightly detuned so there's just a little bit of flat dissonance and the dirty purity of that growl was magnificent. I had to stop, rewind, turn volume up, watch again. Stop, rewind, listen, etc. I never wanted to give up rhythm guitar and pick up bass as much as I did hearing that one growl. It was so satisfying to me.
This is the best performance I've seen from them so far. It gives me chills. So much energy. I love how towards the end some of the guards were like, "eff it" and started rocking out. That's the power of Metallica.
On the one hand I am so pissed that I was born 1996 so I had no chance to see those perfomances live, moscow 91, seattle 89 etc. But on the other hand I feel blessed because I can hear and watch Metallica nonstop whereever I may roam (pun intended). During car and train drives, during lesson (lol), during walks, during grocery shopping, during studying, during workout etc. I focking love it. Imagine dying 1980 without hearing anything from Metallica, rip
+metalmusician6798 did youtube even excist then? do you think? but still, it was a chock to the rulers that so many came to tushino air field that day. the old guys in the kremlin didn´t know who metallica was!
+Hördur Vallur Sigfridson actually everyone knew what western music sounded like, we just smuggled it all through radio recorders or some sort of black market. it was iliegal to play music not aproved by the goverment (most of the western music)
Whatever Metallica is now there is no denying the pure fucking power that can never be taken away from them. This show has so much passion and force that I can feel it through the screen.
Could have been better if it followed the rhythm and tempo more. It doesn't really linger too much on stuff that is happening and instead edited into a mess. Long and steady shot could've been cool when they stopped for couple of seconds. It would be awesome if they have the original footage of the concert on public and edit it out to polish it. Overall, seems like one of the best concerts in the world, too bad the editing was the only mess and it would be awesome to convert it to 4k.
My favorite Metallica's live song ;) I wish I was in Moscow that time :) the full concert and the crowd kicks ass :) that's what I fuckin' love :) METALLICA FOR EVER :)
One of my favorite performances by Metallica - I wish I was at that show. I've been to about 7 or 8 Metallica shows- but the level of energy those fans brought was clearly reciprocated by the band. Harvester of Sorrow is my favorite off of AJFA and one of my favorite songs by the band. It's one of those songs I learned to play on guitar as soon as I heard it... great stuff.
Wow.
Usually kirk doesnt headbang or get that into the music when he plays but when he was all pumped up at 1:24 i got goosebumps just because of the pure energy from this song
There are two reasons why metallica changed the way they did after the black album. 1. james blew his voice out and 2. look at this concert, they played infront of 1.6 mil people. As a band thats a clear cut way to say you have reached your peak. After the black album and WIMR tour, they dont need to make triple platinum albums anymore, they did what they wanted to do as a band and still made great albums. Respect the band and what they want to do. Thats why metallica is the best!
Even when he says stuff like “yeah” and “thank you!” Black era James makes it badass. He was the total package. The Long haired Wild man up for anything! No beer or woman was safe! Lol This is seriously my fav James. Best era to me was the Master/Justice era (with some great one offs like this concert in the Black era) Best James Black era James Cliff and Jason both were always cool and all ways will be
If James and Lars watched that video now, they'd be like: "Oh man, why did we cut out the bass lines from the Justice album, it would have sounded even better"
I have maybe seen this Harverster Of Sorrow version a thousand times, but I can"t help it it so intense and so good that it always brings tears to my eyes. Hall hail Metallica (at least until 91 ...)
