I was thinking the same as you, I have a great respect for Lars! I think that could be the reason why, no matter what, they were able to achieve what they did in the past 30+ years. It doesn't take a genius to understand he's not the best drummer in the planet but he's certainly a great producer and being a great musician is not only about being the best in your instrument, but it's also about the understanding of what you doing and the overall song and the arrangements etc etc! It's like in car race, the best are not the one who can drive awesome, but are the one who can "read" their car and be not only drivers, but testers as well, so that they can tell to the engeneers what to do to set the car as they feel is right and that's what Lars has been doing with James during the past 3 decades!
True, he is kinda the glue who keeps 'tallica togheter. less talented musician compared to the others, but he can hold the creative process like no Jamez can.
DaemoniumCC well you know looking for the best guitar to record is not an easy thing, at the beginning of the video he was using a gibson for writing but later on he start using ESP's.
I love the writing process, it's my favorite part. Simply changing bpms and structures and then having vocals change all that is just what makes a song unique. Pretty soon, you look back and hear old takes and realize..."What song was that!!"
I do love the chorus of this song. It's pretty un-metallica even though it's pretty basic. Lookin forward to the new album :) Metallica is nostalgia, glad to see they're still going
Rabin Miguel sometimes I just feel if it's been done before and BETTER why bother? I'm older than you, seen it and done it and see the futility in it......
Tone Hunter because music is not just about innovation and being unique. It's more so about conveying a certain emotion. And if it works for at least one person, the artist included, then it's a successful piece of art. The amount of people who aren't feeling it don't matter on that subject. Age is a funny thing. While it makes people wiser, it also gives them a sense of bitterness when they don't maintain their youthfulness.
So hilarious. First Rob with that ridiculous green hat, looking like a tourist, then "I like Gugugu, I just gotta get back in Gugugu shape", then Lars getting a massage from a metal man while song writing, then "That's fuckin hard!" On the wah. Lmfao! Classic! It's always good for metal to be funny and not too serious like with Saint Anger. 🤘🏻🎸
I think that Lars is the only one that is not so bored as the others. He has the motivation that they all need BUT at the same time being so motivated he should practice drums home or something
Johnny Valencia well lars is the one primarily in charge of composition and arrangements. That doesn't mean James doesn't have his say, they bounce off each other but Lars is primarily the musical arranger. James is primarily the songwriter.
The band is still together because there are 2 clear leaders and 2 happy followers. When you have 4 leaders/strong personalities in 1 band it usually does not go very far.
@@DankoHidalgo Because it's kinda the fall out of being a metal drummer. You're overworking all the mussels in your arms from a lot of swinging. It happens to baseball players too. The messaging is to relieve the stress and push out the knots because you could tear something if you don't take care of your body in the long run.
@A smile on my face but a Demon inside true. I think he sort feels the drums sound great simple, and doesn't really feel like he needs to be that creative with them. Some parts in hardwired were good, but overall it felt too basic
I get so tired of people throwing Lars under the bus. He'll be the first person to tell you he isn't Neil Peart. But he is a killer arranger with great instincts. As a drummer he just plays for the song which is really the only thing a good drummer should be doing anyway. And none of those classic Metallica tunes would be the same without him because he and James are responsible for piecing all of those riffs together. And he's playing better than he has in years. So...fuck off about Lars.
Hell yeah, man! Finally somebody else that gives Lars some credit! I've always had great respect for him - his leadership, his vision, his arrangement capabilities, and yes, even his solid drumming. Don't need to be flashy, just solid.
Mike Patton outstanding drummer, excellent composer, genius in his world...outside of his world, he just needs to learn to shut up. And yes, I'd say he's a much smoother drummer than he was in the 80s.
TangoPlays He's always been perceived as an arrogant prick, but mostly because he is very opinionated and he was the FIRST person who had the balls to stand up against free file sharing with the whole Napster thing. He took a lot of heat for that. And a lot of fans never forgave him. And fuck those people anyway. You don't get cable or cell phones or cars or anything else for free so why should you get someone's intellectual property for free? But that's another conversation. Anyway...I first saw them in 84' (DJ's Nightclub in Colorado Springs with Lillian Axe opening) and I'll never forget after the show, the rest of the band bolted for the bus, but Lars stayed outside for about 2 hours signing stuff, taking photos and chatting with fans in the freezing cold. And he still goes out of his way to connect with fans. So like him or not or make fun of him.......Metallica wouldn't be where they are...if at all....without him.
amen to that, the whole 'Lars is shit' thing is getting old. its an internet fad. Lars is playing what suits the song, he is serving the song which is what every musician should be doing. Would Metallica be the same if the drums were different? no it wouldn't because that is Metallica's style.
Absolutely, I can't stand drummers who over play and "show boat" during songs, it ruins them. Lars plays beats that suit and compliment the songs, so what if they aren't technically challenging. Lars has a song writing credit on pretty much every Metallica song for a reason. James comes up with the riffs but without Lars vision they are just riffs, great though some of them may be, he crafts them into a song. Kirk and it seems Robert too are happy to let them take the lead but chip in with their own tupence worth, Kirk also has some writing credits on Metallica's best songs so i don't think it's fair to say he just contributes the solo. Solos I don't think generally get a writing credit although I guess it depends on the band and how they divide stuff up.
I like Lars. He motivates all the band. He seems to be very warm hearted deep inside, even if he's a bit controlling. And he's drumming style is unique, the one which has influenced many and brought joy many.
One thing that is never discussed about Metallica is Hetfields voice. His voice has held up for these decades and he still sings great. Very underrated vocalist.
I agree you listen to him over the years and he has advanced his vocals so much. When he was young he was just yelling basically, now he actually sings.
RU-vid algorithm: 2016: Nah, it's too fresh 2017: Probably Not 2018: We getting there 2019 November: Let's put this video in the recommended ones even though he watched it 10 times now. Fucking genius.
@@avantjeef The EET FUK guitar has been beaten up badly during the Justice Era, so much so that the guitars headstock had broke in multiple occasions. Thats why you see that wooden scar of the headstock cause it has been constantly fixed. However maybe he will bring back the guitar when they celebrate 40 years of Metallica, James isn't as reckless as he once was with his guitars.
@@Michael-bm9de you sure about that? I saw them in St. Louis and he kicked one off the stage because it wasn’t tuned right during fade to black. Then in Little Rock I saw him throw one across the stage because he broke the plug off of it… both during hardwire tour
After over 30 years of writing songs I love that in their writing process they're referring to pieces as "the guitar doodly thing, and the chugs riff but not the main one"
You can really see the passion returning to Metallica after they reacquired the rights to their music. Knowing they're no longer making music for a company, must have re-ignited a spark within them :D
I find it so fucking cool that James needs to play his guitar while recording vocals. I and so many people struggle with singing while playing guitar and James Can't sing without playing his xD
Lucas Vieira Galvão Lars obviously played a huge role in the composition and arrangements, as he always has. But hey, who watches videos before commenting anyway?
not always. There are different parts in a song. Solos are one of them. A song can be lifted by a riff or solo or both. Kirk hammett contributed not just solos but also riffs over the years some egs Master of puppets and Enter Sandman
I would say one of the worst.... so I strongly disagree sorry. its an ok song. but moth to flame really...... have they really gotten that lost to sing about a moth to a flame??? really?
Finally we get more insight into what Lars really brings to the table. He gets a lot of criticism for his drumming but rarely gets credit for his work as an arranger/songwriter. Metallica would be nothing without Lars' input on arrangements. His drumming is almost secondary to the importance of his contributions as an arranger.
WOW, that Cliff flag in the back, awesome! Always been a HUGE Lars fan - he's a genius! Metallica-4-life, respect also for Cliff, Mustaine and Newsted David Curtis Drumming
Metallica ven esa bandera Chilena y le da inspiracion de esa hermosa pais y fantastico gente (MEJOR calor humano en el mundo)!........[perdonen mi terible Espanol--soy Californiano y estudie Espanol en High School muchas lunas atras!]
Cats love to climb on equipment in use (upper left corner), the reason is the warmness. They are very wellcome, relaxing and benefical to creative works
As a drummer, I can tell you that our goal is to keep beat and be a backbone. That doesn’t mean constantly shining like we’re the star, but as a metalhead, it’s intensity and enjoy the music we’re playing to with a passion. When Lars is more or less piecing the parts together, he listens to his “fun meter” and with the raw enthusiasm as a “kid” bangin away, it makes sense Metallica is without a doubt one of the greatest and funnest bands of all time TLDR; Lars is a little caveman and when he’s fueled by what he’s hearing, his input makes us, the listeners, have fun with the whole band like him! But it’s nothing without everyone else \m/
i use to have high respect for this band . after 25 since my first day i bought their album, the respect i had for them is enormous. the way they write the songs and the arrangement is insane . welcome back the god of Metal .
35 years after I dubbed they're first ride and master or friend made copies of cool music for me. I didn't know music stores existed until 17. Rap helped independent stores punk and bad music. Metallica is above doors emotionally but some of it, teen angst some. Great feel and perfect original can't believe it songs they're innovative everyone wanted to play like them lots cover bands 90s
Can we just appreciate that these legends just put their creative process out there for free, honestly this is awesome to watch all of these studio sessions
I really love how relaxed and comfortable the vibe is with the band, they really have their chemistry under control every bit of the way during these sessions, which is beautiful to see as a fan. After everything they’ve been through as a band and a family they really have learned a few things along the way it seems. Im glad they are still making music and are relevant still in the music world. Metallica will always be the Led Zeppelin of metal to me. Peace and love, peace and love.
Lars may need to ghost write for some bands man, guy can compose very well! .... .... .... just keep him away from the wah pedal hahahaha looked like he was gunna have a stroke
Lars is like the conductor for an orchestra. He appears useless on stage, but he's actually the one in charge of the whole operation, and the biggest (but not the entire) reason why everything sounds the way it does 😂
