Ita not his finger. It's his head he bashes against a pillow. Its fiction based on the true story of a Canadian soldier who was maimed horrifically by an artillery shell in world war 1
According to what you just you guys just said about not seeing the movie (12:48 - 12:56). Trust me, you really should because it will give you a more frightening idea of the horrors experienced during the First World War. This is what this film and the song is based on. Happy viewing ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-uUfBVLAY_pU.html
@Debisib What all you talking about..?? 90% of kids today are into cheap 80s nostalgia, talking about how great everything was back then. And I don´t know, but I live in a small town in the middle of nowhere, and Ive been playing in bands and giving guitar lessons for like 10 years, and Ive ALWAYS seen a lot of kids into rock, and metal, and all that.
I have kids of 20 and 17. Never fall into the cliche that they don't understand/care/have insight. Misunderstanding the next generation goes back thousands of years. Your parents did it to you, try not to do it to your kids because they've a different view.
@@gabrielp9646 um as a teen myself and from New York specifically brooklyn most kids listen to rap and edm etc the rock and jazz and metal are getting smaller but are still alive
The drums during the" darkness imprisoning me " section is the metaphor for the machine gun that echoes in his head. He is remembering or having mightmares of war! This is a masterpiece on my behalf
It was really funny when they played it on the UK “Top of the pops”, and they knew it was a song of two halves, a quiet one and a brutal metal riffing half. So they were going to play the quiet half, weren’t they, the BBC is kinda scared of metal. So Jamie Theakston introduces it and it’s the second half, from the twin guitar harmonic solo! “Darkness, imprisoning me, all that I see, absolute horror!” Obviously by accident. And they get to the end and Theakston and the audience look shell shocked! They are not ready for “Buddadabudda-Chang budda-Chang budda-Chang!” Hetfield monster riff. “Ooh er! Says Theakston, “That’s a bit heavy for me!”
Good metal songs are quite complex. It's difficult that you love them on first hearing. You need to listen them several times to know when to bang your head.
As others have mentioned its an anti-war novel from 1939 about a guy hit by an artillery shell losing his arms, legs, all his face (ears, eyes, teeth, tongue), and most of his lower groin area. His mind, however, is perfectly functional. He is a prisoner in his own body, fed through tubes, given air. He realizes he can communicate via morse code and asks for help, drifting between reality and fantasy (as he has nothing to base when he's awake or asleep). He asks to be put in a glass case and toured around the world to show the horrors of war, when the military declines, he asks to be killed. They decline that request too. It ends with him knowing he will live the rest of his natural life trapped in his prison.
The thing is Lars does SOS with kicks too. I've learned Morse code when I was 8 and used it on several occasions, I can interpret it on the fly with ease. I've heard the song with the video first time and I still don't know how my jaw didn't detached.
This video is really unsettling. I remember seeing it for the first time on MTV when I was around 5 years old, ('89) and it creeped me out then and still does. Metallica caught shit over making a video - MTV was considered "selling out" to quote unquote 'real' metal bands and fans. This is the video Metallica came out with. People were on the fence about the movie scenes interrupting the song so they made an alternate video of just the band playing in a warehouse. This is the REAL video, the one that has more significant meaning.
Alright, I just have to say that this song is in no way mainstream because it isn't a 2 minute, catchy song. To me it is one of the most beautifully written metal songs even to this day. The guitar intro captures the aesthetic perfectly and every other part from the lyrics to the aggressive breakdown to the drum solo interlude to the outro solo, every part has a role in the song that no other metal band has been able to capture quite like them.
Terrible MTV put up two versions , short and long , I believe it was actually pulled off the top twenty - mtv what a disgraceful channel - now you don’t even get a full song of anything
Orion was played as our wedding party was introduced at our wedding reception. My wife let me pick that song. It may have been the best part of the wedding reception 🤘😆🤘
Juliet your exactly correct about people in a coma, I spent 3 months in a coma and you are absolutely trapped within your head especially if your under a medicated coma
There are so many great songs from Metallica. It is not just about noise, it ‘s the riffs, their music transition, and content of their songs that gets me more than other bands out there. By the way, your dad has great taste in music!
That truly sucks. I subjected my kids to metal as soon as they could talk. The flip side is I had to listen to hiphop/pop when they were older. But it was still a win.
My uncle was the same way, but far more closed-minded. It's the cross between his time as a cop as well as the military-style upbringing that grandpa raised him by. You know, that "Yes Sir!, No Sir!, Can't have any fun with a stick up your ass Sir!" 😒😒 And no, I'm most definitely NOT knocking our military personnel. I have the highest respect for them. Our military personnel put their asses on the line every single day to ensure we have the freedom we enjoy. In fact, my grandpa was a WW2 vet. He served on a carrier, as the CMO as he said on the VERY rare times he talked at all about his war-time experience, but he never stated whether he was in the Atlantic or Pacific fleets.
I'm happy to see this. I saw another father/daughter reaction to this video in which the daughter just didn't care at all. Understandable since Metal is an acquired taste, especially in these days when the genre is not nearly as popular as it was back when Metallica was good. Still, your daughter is so much more receptive to your tastes, which is such a beautiful thing. Many families, especially these days, tend to not connect anymore, and it's almost like we're all just strangers to each other. You two will be able to share these memories of listening to this together for years to come. Take it from someone who was never able to connect: It is hell being alone, in many ways as hellish as the soldier in this music video experiences. Never take each other for granted!
Hail to this! I'm still getting goosebumps from that show. It was amazing, even when standing quite far behind, people were still singing and chanting like crazy!
real fact: when they recorded this masterpiece, they didnt know the book or the movie! one guy in the studio said that there is "jonny got his gun" and so the movie comes into the video
Thanks for checking out this video! What's your metal tomatoes rating for One? What do you think about the bass-boosted version of the song we listen to after the studio version? Any recommendations for School of Metal?
This song is easily a 98 tomatoes, it's just a staple of metal and a classic. I'm not a huge Metallica fan (obviously grew up on them in the late 80's/early 90's and lost interest after the black album, cuz as Chuck said, "the rest doesn't really matter"), but this song is always a pleasure to listen to. For the next School of Metal, maybe Deep Purple - Burn, or Highway Star (live from the 1974 California Jam concert)? That whole concert was EPIC, but those 2 are the easy choices for a first listen.
There's also a couple of scenes from the post-apocalyptic movie A Boy And His Dog, which stars a young Don Johnson and Jason Robards, who was also in Johnny Got His Gun.
My favorite Metallica tune is a tie between Damage, INC, and For Whom The Bell Tolls. Cliffs distorted bass intro on that one is effin sick!! Check out the live version from 1986. Cliff Burton was such a cool dude. He brought a smile to everyone face everyday. There is also a video called Cliff Burton Bass Solo, where he is shredding on a $3000 Rickenbacker bass. But what is even more amazing is in the live video of For Whom The Bell Tolls he is playing a $200 Aria Pro II bass. Pretty much considered a cheap garage banger, but in Cliff hands .... So AWESOME!
I’m in Ireland and followed Metallica since mid80s . And justice for all is my first ever album when I was 10. Please react to my favorite instrumental of all of theirs “ to live is to die”. Tribute to bass player Cliff Burton and harmonizing part is Epic and gives me shivers all over when I listen to it.
Glad to see a youngster that actually understands it. It was relevant to me, because my Great Grandad fought at the battle of the Somme. All of his friends were blown to pieces by a shell. My Grandad died when I was 16 and he still had shrapnel stuck down one side of his body 70 years later. And this video is a sanitizer version of the injuries that those young Men went through. There were Men that came back with half their heads blown off. And they were still alive.
Pulling teeth is definitely one that should be listened to with Cliff Burton playing. Even better would be reacting to the live versions of the song as played by Metallica's current bassist compared to Cliff. The difference is eye opening especially when you consider how young Cliff was when he played it.
Cliff was not only a master of the bass, he was one of the greatest musicians ever in my opinion. How many other people can play a bass and make it sound like a lead guitar? One of Metallica's best members ever, even though he was actually technically the band's second bassist (the very first bassist being Ron McGovney, back when Dave Mustain was another original member). Taken from us too soon by that bus accident in Europe (in Switzerland if I recall correctly). R.I.P Cliff Burton
Greatest of the Great...1st time in Finland 1986, with Cliff. Since that day, biggest ONE for me. They got 10 Years hed start for Nightwish...My Heroes. Classic...KIITOS👍
The best thing about this song is when it was nominated for a Grammy and they performed it live at the Grammy Awards. It was a bit of a surreal moment back in the 80s to see Metallica on TV performing at the Grammys. heh When they showed the crowd, you could see some people getting really into it, but most of the crowd looked like, "What the hell is this?!" LMAO! That was also an infamous night because Jethro Tull won the newly added Heavy Metal award. lol Gotta love that.
During the first 3 albums the bass sound was never a problem. The only album were you hear not a single bass note is "justice for all" and even in the remastered version they didnt change that. And the reason for that is that they are still childisch assholes. Not more not less!
One-Eye bs, you can hear Cliff great on those albums, the only way you can’t hear it is if you don’t, a typical music fan might not hear it but anyone that plays or understands music will have no issues.. bass played a lesser part in their music after Cliff but it’s still prevalent if you’re actually listening.. plus the focus of Metallica has always been guitars and drums because James and Lars are the writers of 99.9% of it all..
TubetakerBHV the real reason the bass is non existent on AJFA is because of the frequencies of the mix, James guitars are scooped with the mids taken out, so it’s high gain with a heavy bottom, the bass gets lost because it occupies the same space, and with James ego during that period and being the main writer he’s obviously not gonna bend. Plus Metallica has always been all about guitars and drums, James and Lars drive the ship, they aren’t gonna let anyone really shine beyond themselves.. hence even clipping Kirks wings on the St Anger album with no solos.. they were huge egotistical asshats until that point and almost lost their band because of it
The movie was based on a realnsoldier, and the details are in the lyrics. "Landmine has taken my sight, taken my speech, taken my hair and taken my arms, taken my legs..." His whole face was scooped out, and all limbs were blown off in an airstrike, leaving him with only his thoughts.
I have 13 different recordings of this song, in its single form alone, all the way from little 3" CDs in card sleeves to 12" picture discs (Mint, NRFB!), unique foreign issues and the "2 of One" VHS! I think it was the first song I learned to play on guitar (never anywhere near as well as Kirk of course). Like I've said before, Justice was my first album too, and remains a firm favourite. They won a grammy for this song, and yes, I would say it helped propel them from darlings of thrash metal to mainstream metal monsters. There's a reverse snobbery in metal fandom where bands are punished for becoming popular. People equate "popular" to "mainstream", and then surmise that mainstream is the antithesis of cool. Some even say a band has "sold out" just because their latest album went platinum. What nonsense is this? I think this is very unfair. Anyway, I don't think you mentioned it, but an interesting fact is that they actually bought the entire rights to the movie "Johnny Got His Gun" just so they wouldn't have to keep paying royalties! Great reaction as always guys. Keep them coming!
I saw the movie one night when I was really young, then I found the video much later. It was actually one of the first metal videos ever made. Still one of the greatests of all time. Made me a Metallica fan instantly
And for the record. Metallica loaned many stuff, for that gig in Saapasjalka Rock(1986). From Marko Hietala's band Tarot...😁 Who would have known back then...RIP Cliff 😢
basically, the song goes along with the movie. even though he got injured he is calm at first but as the song and movie go along, his mind gets frantic and song shows that. until the end where he lost it all. and that is when the song gets nuts
Please react to Wintersun - Sons of Winter and Stars live rehearsal @ Sonic Pump Studios. The song is one of the best songs I know and Wintersun is really epic band (current Nightwish's drummer is Wintersun's original drummer).
One of the hardest scenes (that most people miss) is the final one. Those at home who didn’t experience war first hand, singing and drinking and moving on with life. While the broken war vet is moved into the back room out of sight and forgotten that they exist.
Man, this video kills me every time I watch it (can't imagine what fans and people in general thought about it when it first appeared!), such a killer video! If the album should have had bass? Well, not anymore!! :) It is what it is; a killer sound! Great review once more.
Great break down! Yes, the boosted bass adds so much more to the song. They always treated Jason like an outsider and prevented much of his creativity from showing through, they never considered him part of metallica, just a fill in...sad but true 😮
yes for shure " anesthesia....pulling teeth" live in chicago 1983. cliff was the muse for the band. he had a masters level ability to write music but became a freaking monster actually playing his bass. he was inspired by his brothers death at young age to be the best player ever and he succeeded. to good for this earth so he was taken early.
Kinda get it why someone would call One mainstream in 2019, but believe you me, in 88 this song was anything but. Shows that metallica did a great job bringing thrash out of the shadows into the forefront..
The lack of bass was by mean no fault of Jason, it was not his decision. In Self titled or "Black Album" there is plenty of bass and Jasons bass playing skills are made more than clear, My Friend of Misery being one perfect example.
Just came across this reaction video of your channel,I like your guy's reaction to these music videos because I love Metal, rock and I definitely love grunge music,I even still wear flannel shirts all the time,So awesome channel and keep it up. 🤘
"There was something deeply disturbing..." you nailed it, and you get it. Nice work, Dad. Not only for having a bond with your daughter, but for making sure certain legacies are carried on. While some are tik tokking or whatever that's called, you're instilling an appreciation for music. It doesn't matter the genre, it's time spent together. Life can be very hard and horrifying. Trying to shelter our kids from it might feel right, but that's more for the parent then the kid. Came across this in my "suggested" list, and I'm hitting subscribe now to see what else you've got. if this is any indication, it's going to be great. This is one of my favorite songs/music videos. To see one without the others loses too much. Certainly one of the most powerful. If you have family deployed or have been deployed yourself, this can really get to you.
A classic for sure, strong lyrics. This is a style Metallica could have stuck with, plus minus (more thrash). But sadly that was not to be the case. Circle of Death: #Warbringer - Silhouettes ... Something to discuss and headbang to! Perhaps do a Behemoth and a Volbeat reaction before the concert in August?
I've heard the bass-enhanced versions of all the songs off Justice, and it's strange, because I appreciate them and think they are better songs, but I still like the originals more because that's just the sound I heard when I fell in love with each song. I'd be interested to hear what Juliette thinks of Orion, and what her reaction to a Metallica instrumental would be. Or heck any instrumental at all. Hearing a song that doesn't have lyrics can make for an interesting reaction, especially for someone that is unfamiliar with instrumentals.
I headbang, looking at people who headbangs. No wonder why my girlfriend ask me what i am doing... Eager to see the deep purplization My god, evey video i'm stun by the general knowlewdge and the curious spirit of Juliette. That's refreashing to see someone this clever this early. Keep it up girl !
Funny fact: that was them third single from ...AND JUSTICE FOR ALL (1988), them first album (out of four studio albums) they made with Jason Newsted!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
The girl's face at the end was pretty much the face of every person who ever saw this video back in the day. As James said "I like the video because people didn't know what to say after they watched it."
As many people have already said, the movie in the video is based on the book of the same name (Johnny Got His Gun) by Dalton Trumbo. It is deeply chilling and I recommend it. Movie is good too though.
I love what Juliette said about the video being disturbing to watch. She's totally right! It's supposed to be disturbing; it's supposed to get people to think about the pointlessness of war, and the horrors that are forced on it's victims. The original album track did not have the scenes from the movie; they were added to make the video *even* more powerful. 'One' almost seems like a follow up to 'Disposable Heroes' from Master of Puppets; I'd love to see you react/review to that one as well.
I was actually the opposite, I was into kill em all and ride the lightening. I couldn't get into the heavy darkness of master of puppets. It took some time to get used to the deeper sound.
I personally give it a 100 in your meter. It is my favorite Metallica song by a long shot. One thing I wanted to comment on: when you said he was sending Morse code wanting to die he might have used a finger. He had no arms or legs, he was a blind deaf/mute with a head and torso. He was using his head jerks to send the Code; that's why sometimes you see him jerking his head up and back down quickly, to form letters. As to what others have commented on, I am torn between using this video as a reaction, as opposed to the studio version. The song is better to listen to on the studio, the video is better to give context to the lyrics and the message. I would probably lean towards studio version with lyrics as a reaction, but watch the video on your own after.
I've heard the song hundreds of times and seen the video probably just as many times, and at 50 years old, I still find myself getting all choked up over it. My first Metallica album was 'Kill 'Em All'. And oddly enough, I think turning down the bass in And Justice For All is waht made the album as great as it is. It's different, but it works. I love how she understood it. Great reaction vid!
Great video, as always. I love Metallica and have since High School. What makes you two's reaction so good and unique is that we hear both an adult's views and a teenager's views. I love you guy's videos. Thank you.
So I found your channel and I love it. I love that your spending time with your daughter and teaching her about music. I feel in todays world the rock, hard rock and heavy metal just really doesn't exist. I wish there were more bands in this genera. (not sure if I spelled that right) I love that your daughter actually has something to say and seems to enjoy listening to rock music. (heavy metal) Any way new subscriber here.
You mentioned Blackened. I always tease my wife and call that "her song". When we were dating, and I ran out of "easy listening" (Tesla, Candlebox, Scorpions) she wanted to hear what I thought was heavier. She thought we were rocking hard already.. LOL I put on Justice, she was listening, trying to hear the words. The first Metallica lyric that she understood was See your mother Put to death See your mother die The look of horror on her face was priceless. Once she read the full lyrics, she was ok, but I"ll never forget that look. haha
Behemoth is amazing and since they’re going to be at knotfest you might as well react to them! Is kid your ready but “Oh father, Oh Satan, Oh sun” is an awesome track from them.
When I first listened to it as a teenager in the early 90s, it was my 2nd metal album (after I got hooked The Black Album, like a lot of people at the time) and I thought the sound was absolutely amazing. I'd never heard anything like it before. That's when I knew I loved metal.
