You can tell how hyped James was for this gig, as a musician I can totally relate to him. Being on stage as a teenager not giving a fuck bout anything but playing your stuff while people goes fucking nuts is a feeling completely unmatchable.
back when no one cared about how good are they playing, how good are the vocals and etc. they were enjoying that energy, the real thrash metal. the real ones just head bang and scream “fuck yeah”
@david hefner you read my mind.. I find Kill Ride and Master to be incredibly amazing and depending on the mood I may choose Master as the pinnacle however the one that is hands down the king of Metallica albums has to be Kill em All. Ride the Lightning is simply amazing but I'm not the biggest fan of trapped under ice
Hes palm muting the Low E string. Trust me, I actually play guitar, I can play every song on Kill em All and I guarantee you thats what hes doing. They do it alot on the KEA songs
Cliff Burton: Was way ahead of his time. Was the, by far, the most talented musician/song writer in Metallica history. Was THE EPITOME of a Metal head! Was the greatest head banger of all time. Was, arguably, the greatest Bassist in Heavy Metal history. Was why Metallica became so successful. Is loved and missed by millions of people.
@@MarySamsonite It's a shitty comment in the first place. Lars wasn't even good here. He was still learning. 2-3 years down the road, though, he was a beast. Love it when a generic human starts to talk about "keeping time" or other things that they have NO BUSINESS even trying to talk about. Get it, Swanson?
Phantom Lord is a hardcore, headbanging beast, comparable to a young, brutal Mike Tyson putting away a defenseless opponent. Thanks to the Chicago fan that filmed this treasured gift.
0:06 James: Get that shit outta my way! Love this man so damn much! Also, he’s getting drunk because his body is bright red. When your stage one drunk, your gonna feel super warm and hot. My dad told me this cause he’s a former alcoholic. Anyways, James is awesome and I love him!
I remember that Ray Burton once said that he thought that Metallica expressed a ton of joy and delight during their shows, which "put a smile on your face"; this video is one perfect example of what he probably meant by that.
Wow! Really? This is awesome I agree. But, they only got better after this. This is great in the way that it sounds very raw. But, their more recent preformances sound way tighter. And the music lessons they took after this showed in Ride the lighting and Puppets. I know you didn't say that this was their best. But, how is this better than the more recent verisons of their older songs?
They definitely got better as the 80's progressed as you can tell with all the albums that followed right up until The Black Album, but I feel these days they don't play their classic material to it's full potential. Some of the drumming is simplified with fills not being played properly and a lack of awareness of what should be done to bring out the full potential of a song. Whereas back here, everything they play has a near perfect studio representation while still capturing that live energy.
@@darthanddedeu2580 most likely after the MTV 'One' video success in around 88 89.. they're a strange band in away.. their pop metal album in 1991 is way better unique than a lot of the pop metal of the day (if you're old enough to rmb ;)
I’m assuming every record company in the world were beating down these kids door to have them sign with them. These guys are and we’re ridiculously good. We are witnessing the greatest rock band ever folks, take it all in while you can.....
Back when metallica were young loud drunk and fast back when metallica were very special at this time cliff was still alive and metallica were true to metal and pure
@@jasonggabbott True, I do think they went back do their thrash roots with that one, but I just think the vocals make the songs loose a lot of energy. Obviously because they're aging but I'm just not a fan. Just my opinion of course
Metallica at their best in the pre-Black album Era. They were young and full of piss and vinegar, not trying to prove they were the best but just thrashing. RIP Cliff you're always going to be the bass king.
Who would have thought then that we would be witnessing the beginning of a legendary band that would dominate the heavy metal scene for the next 36 yrs and counting these boys have given us so much to appreciate even beyond the scope of music
I think that James' arm movements during the interlude at 3:14 are universal; it's something that a lot of people would start doing naturally without even thinking about it.
If you watch carefully, the present Hetfield resembles very much to that. I begin to suspect that in between (...and justice- black album) he took his image too seriously as the metal idol. We loved that.....Now he returned to be more loose again. We didn't know (at least me) that early period very well. Maybe things are not as they appear to be after all....
Yup. Dave Mustaine wrote most of Kill em All and part of Ride the Lightning. And he re-used quite a bit of parts he wrote for Metallica songs... including The Mechanix and at least a couple of riffs from The Call of Ktulu.
Why does no one talks about this V James is using? I remember that at the first time I saw this concert this guitar kept in my mind because of its particular look, the tape over the neck pickup, the color, it's so unusual for James, I'll make a replica of it someday
They had this and one other non-Gibson V (maybe a Fernandes??), black with one pickup…I guess those two were the backup guitars to the Electra and Gibson. There’s a photo of Lars holding both of those guitars with Cliff off-camera holding a hammer to his head
To be sure "Kill'em All" didn't have one bad song on it. But 'Phantom Lord' in my book was the best song on the album and one of the greatest pure unrelenting Thrash Metal songs ever recorded. If aliens visited me and asked me what Thrash Metal is then 'Phantom Lord' is one of the first songs I would play for them. Metallica was in rare form when orchestrating this gem of a song. It's timeless. \mm/
Top of their game! God they were good back in the day. Where'd these guys go? Well I know we lost Mr Burton but these other guys, though...and they were probably 3/4 to blackout drunk too! And I gotta give it up for Cliff headbanging to a different time signature.
Damn the metro is one of the best venues in Chicago. The furthest spot from the stage is like 50ft. Would have been unreal to see metallica at the metro but unfortunately I was negative 2 lol
I’ve played plenty of live shows. And you should have a tuned fucking guitar if you’re going to play it. So what other bold, incorrect statement you got?
