@@JPX64Channel haha just listened to this and that's the first thing I thought about. "I wouldn't ask you to do a drum solo if your arm fell off. Okay buddy? Pal?" lol
@@howyoudoin2969 Watch A year and a Half in the life part 1. You will see Hetfield play that low assed distorted part. They tuned a guitar way down to add to that part.
@@jonathanryan2915 it is edit: actually it's not.. lol my bad.. I just checked the video where he's recording that part and it clearly is a guitar.... sounds bassy as fuck though
I believe he used a spector bass on this album, they have a pretty solid tone. So a bass with a harder wood, P/J pickups (active), and a sans amp bass driver would get you somewhere near.
Easy, Spector NS2 (this was a 1981 NS2 Haz Preamp), Ampeg SVT II Pro, SansAmp! There you go! Now get ready to fork over $$$$$$$$$$$ because the NS2 will cost more than the rig and sansamp.
If i can just play one song on the bass and than die - this was the one to pick for me!!! Hell yeah... Jason is an beast on the bass!!! 🤘 He seems to hit the strings with a hammer.
Almost every rock & metal song has 2 blended basses, one the direct injection (DI) signal going to a distortion pedal, and the other through a cabinet, but I never noticed this in the studio song.
Yep, baritone guitar overdub in this one. But interestingly there's an outtake from the making-of video in which Bob Rock mentions samples in addition to the DI, miked and "boombox" tracks. Didn't sound like he was joking, and sounds like it was just for Sad But True. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-6kqHtKBfSXs.html
You can also hear some octave doubling in the bass in this video..esp. noticeable in the choruses when the bass has to play higher notes. Don't know if that's the sample bass or just a subharmonic effect. But the overall effect is beefy AF!
It's not uncommon for a singer to record a "scratch track" for the other band members to play along to as they record. What you're hearing is bleed from that recording into the microphones that recorded the bass/drums.
Why does it feel like there is a lot of room in this mix and no that much of a close mics going on, most of the guys do it the other way around, this sounds dope tho
