Metallica's self-titled album, commonly known as "The Black Album", is one of the best-selling records of all time. But does it make it the best Metallica album? In fact, some even view it as the worst one. The Black Album introduced me to the band. I love it, but it does have flaws, which even James Hetfield himself admited. This is what we're discussing in today's episode of MetalliGeek - our Metallica podcast.

Andriy Vasylenko st. Anger is a really good record. First record I heard from Metallica was Justice. Honestly the next album I heard from them was st. Anger. It’s such a good album. In a time where the band was in hard times, listening to the lyrics, it’s fucking amazing. As a die hard fan, I just understand the lyrics.if St. Anger wasn’t produced so horribly, that would be the Black Album of the 2000s. St. Anger is a better album than we all think

I think so too. If they did make “My Friend of Misery” an instrumental, then I think Jason should have used the 12-string bass that he used on “Wherever I May Roam”. The extra layer of sound would have been great for harmonies.

Honestly I see this album as an a equivalent to some of the Beatles and The Who albums. Not necessarily fans favourite, but the best way for people to be broken in. Also, its commercial success is not a bad thing whatsoever. It made Metal so much more accessible. They were some of the first to let people know that liking metal is not a bad thing. Most metalheads even today have such an arrogance towards non-metalheads that makes the genre sometimes inaccessible. The black album was a way to bridge that gap so to speak. Musically, there is no doubt filler within the album. However, the band themselves were at their peak and higher, which makes the black album era of metallica still on of my favourites

A comment that I saw on My Friend Of Misery's comment section Little known fact - this song was originally an instrumental. Black Album was the 1st Metallica album to not have in instrumental. James said he got so in love with the music from this song he would listen to it multiple times a day while they were recording the album, and eventually he started hearing a vocal track with it in his head, so he had to write some lyrics and see how it sounded. Everyone loved it and agreed it was better with the vocal track than without, and Bob Rock made it so. That's why this song has such a different feel to it than most Metallica songs. . .the writing process was different than most of their songs. And it was totally complete before any vocal tracking was even considered. I gotta say. . .goddamn this would have been an amazing instrumental. But James lyrics in this song are too important to have gone by the wayside. Its pretty fuckin difficult to complain about the final product. Lol.

Sad But True was the first Metallica song I ever heard. Heard it on the radio. I'd tune in every day just for Metallica, the station I listened to even had Metallica Mondays among other things. When I was very very young I lived for the radio. When I was 11 or 12 I got my first CD player, bought my first Metallica record at the local movie store. I think it was MoP. I listened to every track hundreds of times on repeat. I was completely taken by heavy music. When I graduated HS I started to branch out. Pantera has since become my favorite metal band, however, Metallica will always by my original number 1, the band that got me into metal, got me into guitar, and influenced me and my playing to some unknowable extent far beyond my own comprehension. All I know is I NEED heavy guitar in my life

Hey, I am a big fan, I never really comment on videos but I felt like I should say this to you. I am a huge Metallica fan, my friend is a big Metallica fan too but he doesn’t like how I only like them and how they are the only metal band I technically listen to, I try not listening to most metal because I don’t know if it is satanic. No one else is a big Metallica and talks about them besides you (on RU-vid), when I found your channel it inspired me to play bass even more, it told me about cliff and I thought lars was my favorite (I’m a drummer). After seeing the cliff burton hardest to easiest video and seeing the part about live at day on the green I watched the whole video and loved the way he played, you can tell he loves bass and wants to show how good he is, he also likes a challenge. I have baby hands so bass is kinda hard to learn right now but I don’t care, cliff also seems like the type of guy you would like to hang out with. Thanks for giving me the chance info about Metallica, your the best. And one last thing, what’s a good and non expensive bass I should buy?

Not at all man. They were going more and more progressive throughout the years, then the black album came, a huge step backwards in term of progressiveness. When I hear Heaten's album "Victims of deception", I always feel like an album like that would have been a natural successor to "And justice for all".

I don't see how. They are like polar opposites. Short songs vs long songs. Catchier riff songs compared to complex themes. I liked the black album, I was always happy to get more Metallica music. But it was a huge abrupt change in their style. I think the success of their single One (and almost Grammy win) is the reason they changed. They got the taste of mainstream success and went with it.
@winterunterseher8937
@winterunterseher8937 4 года назад
Yeah, I have always thought that there are songs/parts on Load/Reload that if the blues sound waa minimized on, they could have been on the Black Album, or made Black Album Part 2 (which I'm sure would have also been very successful, maybe more successful than Load/Reload). Also, I do agree and have noticed that some songs on the previous albums in the 80s could have fit on the Black Album as well, or hinted at it. Songs like For Whom the Bell Tolls, Thing That Should Not Be, Harvestor of Sorrow (and maybe their 80s ballads too or other midpaced songs like Creeping Death, Ride the Lightning, Escape?, Master of Puppets, The Four Horsemen, No Remorse, or maybe even The Shortest Straw or something else of AFJA). If you want to see what I mean, go check out StateofMercury's channels of the songs from the 80s if there were on the Black album. Sounds really great in my opinion, and made me realize how they could fit the Black album's style. Also, interesting thought on a link album between AJFA and the Black Album. I feel Death Magnetic would fit nicely there (thought it was released in 2008). I feel it has a good combination of complex/thrashy from AJFA, and midtempo/strsightforwardness of Black Album. Just a thought though. Hardwired is the same but with more emphasis on Black album/Load/Reload influences (midtempo/strsightforwardness with more blues stuff than on Death Magnetic). I feel like Death Magnetic could have also come right after the Black Album as well, or something like it: a fusion of past thrashy/complexity with midtempo/strsightforwardness of just released Black album. Nonetheless, interesting to think songs on albums like Load/Reload, Death Magnetic, and Hardwired that could fit the Black Album and make a Black Album part 2 almost. I have always felt as well that there were thrashy parts on the Black album as well, in songs like Holier Than Thou, Don't Tread on Me, Through the Never, Of Wolf and Man, and The Struggle Within. But anyways, I do think it is a grest album, one of my favorites, especially production wise (the drum sound, bass tone, guitar tone are all great). Also, an unrelated and probably ridiculous idea, but what if they released something called the White Album? How would it sound I wonder, and how would it be similar or different to the Black Album, or whatever else we've heard from Metallica before? It is intdresting also to examine what I call the "wave of black albums" in the early 90s, where bands opted to go less thrashy/progressive and followed suite after or around the time Metallica released the Black Album. I'm talking albums like Countdown to Extinction/Youthanasia/Cryptic Writings by the other band, Sound of White Noise by Anthrax, The Ritual by Testament, Force of Habit by Exodus, I Hear Black by Overkill, Chaos AD/Roots by Sepultura, Renewal/Cause for Conflict/Outcast/Endorama by Kreator, Grin by Coroner (still pretty progressive album), The Human Factor/Hanging in the Balance by Metal Church (could even put Blessing in Disguise there), Cuatro/Drift/High by Flotsam & Jetsam, Art of Rebellion by Suicidal Tendencies, Independent/Heal by Sacred Reich, Something Wicked by Nuclear Assault, Distortion/Green by Forbidden, Mourning Has Broken by Sabbat, Set the World on Fire/King of the Kill/Refresh the Demon/Remains by Annihiliator, and I'm sure the list goes on.

Let me put my comment into context. I got into Metallica in mid-1986 aged 12. I quickly bought Master of Puppets (special order then even in the UK) and acquired copies of Kill ‘em All and Ride the Lightning. All good stuff and a huge range of music across these 3 albums. I recall reading about Cliff’s death in Kerrang magazine in maybe October 86. Justice came out in ’88 and I’m pretty sure I bought it in the first week or so of release. Now I had 4 albums (all quite different in their own ways, I fell out of love with Metallica for a while as they hadn’t released anything for so long, so when the Black album came out in ’91, I bought it on the day of release. First listen was forgettable, but in those days, I had the cassette (remember those) in my car. I probably didn’t change the cassette for maybe 4 months, just listening back and forth. Yes, I agree, it’s not a perfect album. But, it’s a damn good one and in reality lifted Metallica out of obscurity and made them much more accessible. If not for the success of the Back album, many of the others may not be as easy to come by. I quickly upgraded my various LPs, tapes and copies to CD versions. Every release since then has been bought on the day of release, apart from elements of St Anger, I’ve never been disappointed. Regardless, I appreciate your analysis, keep up the good work.

I LOVE the Black Album, and it's not necessarily my favorite (THAT distinction goes to Ride The 🌩). But it was well produced (maybe TOO well!), well written, brilliantly planned out, and showcased wonderful lyrics as well as great music. I love 'Through The Never' ! It sounds closest to '...And Justice For All' out of everything on the black album, which is what I had hoped it would be a follow up to. I was both happy with new the sound of this album, as it was still a great album, and disappointed as well, because it wasn't anything like anything previous albums, mainly "Justice", as it was still fresh in my mind. I still play the shit out of that album. The black album ? I can't remember the last time I listened to that for more than a song or two at a time.

My favorites on the Black album are Holier Than Thou and My Friend Of Misery. They really are stand out tracks and weren't overplayed on the radio if played at all. The middle part of Misery is a beautiful rendition that could have been a part II to To Live is To Die. But I agree that a good majority of the album has filler. Very few bands are doing new and revolutionary stuff a decade and five albums into their career. The record isn’t groundbreaking but it was a great way to bring new people to both Metallica and metal more widely. I was 11 when it came out and was already interested in metal from my minimal exposure from Iron Maiden having a couple of U.K. no. 1 singles in my childhood that actually got some radio play. A friend’s brother letting me hear the Black Album was the starting point for me seeking out actual metal after years of loving my Dad’s Queen and Deep Purple records. I started buying Kerrang! and hanging out with the guys in school who were metalheads. I picked up a guitar a couple of years later and my teen years were heavily influenced by my discovery of heavy music.

being a tallica fan since 1985 and all the way up to load... i rellay dont understand the critisism of the black album.. what i like the most about tallica is the hard the power, the tempo changes the breaks tha solos. the power... all that is not on the black album... and yet, i find it an AMAZING album.... the songs u mention here as some bad songs, i think are wonderfull .. somehow, they manage to be all what i love from the first 4 albums.. without doing it... the riffs the melodies the sound does it all to me... theres no need for alot of different riffs, no need for alot of tempochange breaks and all the great stuff..... the songs alone does the trick... somehow :)'
