Do you still hate St Anger? Do you still think St Anger is Metallica worst album? Yeah, it totally deserves the label. But regardless, it has a lot to be liked for.

I feel like I might be the only person on this planet who actually likes and appreciates the snare. It just works perfectly with the raw sound and reminds me even a bit of the percussion on the first Slipknot album. As for the lyrics: Again, they work perfectly in the context of the album. St. Anger is pure emotion put on a record, so it just makes sense for everyone to put their thoughts into the lyrics.

My 2 cents on the album The older I became, the better I started to understand what the album really is about and why its an important piece of the band that should get respect (no puns intended). It has flaws. The songs are sometimes incredibly long, almost unnecessarily. People might not like the downtuned guitars, the garbage bin snare, the lack of solos, the NuMetal inspiration on some parts, or James' vocal performance. But all this comes together to create an atmosphere that is genuine. And it's about being pissed off, angry, miserable, depressed. The riffs are killer, the lyrics are hard hitting, and the whole Garage Band sound grown on me. It's not supposed to be polished, good sounding or pleasent. Anger and depression ain't pleasent either. Also, Sweet Amber and The Unnamed Feeling deserve to be treated as classics.

@@AndriyVasylenko Tbh, the entire album is underrated. Since I started playing Bass and later Guitar down the line, I valued these songs differently. They're simple, catchy, fun to play and rolls some steam out of you if you're angry. All you do is punch the fuck out of those 0 3 5 notes to hell and back. The entire album feels like a therapy session to anger issues, which is exactly what it should be. On the sidenote, people should give props to James for writing riffs in A# in Invisible Kid that still feels like Metallica. Melody, heaviness, percussion, dynamics, all blending in. Most musicians playing in that tuning just start to chuggy chug most of the time and that's it really.

I had always thought Invisible Kid was about Newsted, since one of his nicknames from the others was "Jason New-Kid." Made sense to me, and in the context of the lyrics, but that was just me. With that, St. Anger was the most metal album of the time because it was rebellious and did not care for what everyone else was doing. I always found it ironic when people complained about certain aspects of the album, thinking to myself, "isn't metal supposed to be loud, obnoxious, and hated by everyone on the surface?"
@esxxso

@underscoreisnotvalid
@underscoreisnotvalid 4 года назад
I like St Anger because: 1. James' vocals are amazing, probably the most dynamic and versatile since Black album - the tone in his voice is a highpoint of his career. 2. The songs are long and progressive and full of heavy riffs (best since AJFA) with some really jarring rhythms and dissonance 3. The downtuned guitar tone was brutal as fuck - especially on Invisible Kid - it's borderline Meshuggah level grooviness 4. The drumming is mostly pretty good and versatile. There are a few funk/nu metal/ snare ghost-note style grooves with open and closed hihats etc. 5. The songs sound genuinely full of rage - it's all brutal from start to finish - even the unnamed feeling (a ballad) feels brutal, especially with james' vox. 6. The production is raw and grimy as hell - it reminds me of the green sludgy walls in the multiplayer basement level in goldeneye 64 7. The cool album art and the Some Kinda Monster DVD were a great supplement and insight into the album, giving me a deeper appreciation for it. 8. The lyrics are actually pretty good I think. They are catchy and some of the most memorable of any albums they've done - I loved Kirk's input. 9. It was the 3rd Metallica album I ever heard - 1st being AJFA, then Black Album, then this - I bought it as soon as it came out ( I was only 12 or so) because I saw the music video for St Anger.. so this album has a certain sentimentality to it. 10. The handful of clean melodic sections in the album are great, and really add to the dynamic of the album - any they are super melodic and beautiful at times. I dislike St Anger because: 1. The snare tone isn't great, but it never bothered me as much as it did everyone else 2. You can literally hear a few bad ProTools edits in the songs, where cymbals are hard cut without fully ringing out etc. - just plain lazy production and editing 3. The song structures are awful at times - you can tell they were just randomly adding riffs and copying and pasting sections without any real flow 4. The lack of any higher register guitar playing (lead guitar, solos etc.) - everything was just deep and chuggy without much higher pitched stuff which gets tiresome 5. Some of Lars' drum groove choices sound really forced and don't fit the riffs, and some are just plain bad songwriting, I think he favoured variety over 'playing the.. you know.. beat part' and keeping it solid to serve the song. 6. It seemed to be following trends of the early 2000s whether they realised it or not (downtuned guitars, nu metal vibe, angsty vocals etc.) but this isn't necessarily a bad thing, it just hasn't aged as well as some other albums. 7. Bob Rock was uninspiring on bass - I think it would have been a better album if Newsted was still around - I think Jason would have been a good influence and pushed for better songs, without letting Lars and James' egos get in the way of everything. 8. It was too loud, compressed and washy. It needed to have a tighter sound closer to Master of Puppets for the songs to really shine

The main problems I have with "St. Anger" are somewhat similar to yours Andriy, I agree with you on the lyrics, they really do sound like 'therapy' lyrics and rely too much on profanity as a crutch. As a guy who does listen to lyrics and enjoys them this is one of the main reasons I dislike the album, (although "Sweet Amber" is an exception). I think that if the album had better lyrics I would enjoy it more, this is one reason "All Within My Hands" is my favourite song on the album, the lyrics are good. Another problem I have with the album is: unlike you, I don't like James' vocals on the album, I personally find it hard to listen to him scream through his midlife crisis, (although I know that that's the point). And of course, the songs are waaay too long! Songs like "Invisible Kid" don't need to be 8 minutes long! (Although I have a soft spot for that song personally). But hey now the positives! The tone of the guitars are absolutely awesome! They're heavy and dirrrrty and they sound like they'll kick you in the balls! Also the songs are full of fast heavy almost thrashy riffs! Overall, I think that if the lyrics were better, James sounded better and the songs were shorter, I would dig this album a lot more. I don't even mind the production of the album that much, (except it's too focking loud!), the snare isn't unforgivable and I think "I Disappear" is great, and even the lack of solos is forgivable because frankly, a lot of Kirk's Mid/Late 90s solos weren't that great or memorable in my opinion. And Finally, of course it is the album that saved the band from breaking up so for that alone it deserves our respect. All the best Frrrriend!

As I said on instagram, people need to get over the whole ''snare'' excuse. No single sound can be called ''bad'', just the way it's implemented and used in a song as a sample (for example) can be bad, if the drums were lower in the mix it wouldn't have been anywhere near as hated upon, same with the vocals. It's an entertaining product of it's time and has that charm going for it, and that's why it's actually stuck for so long, because it still has character as opposed to their newer stuff (DM AND HWTSD). If anyone would give a proper argument against the snare than ''oh its bad cause its bad lol'' then I'd be willing to discuss it with them.

This album is one of my favorites of all time. It's so fucking ugly, angry, raw, unfiltered, yet cathartic, relieving, and beautiful in its core. It got me through a very bad time in my life and I would never trade those sounds for anything else. All Within My Hands in particular, is the best song in this album for its emotional lyrics. Not everyone gets it, unless you happen to be in a dark spot in your life. James bared his feelings and it speaks to me like no other songs I've heard of. "Hate me now, kill all within my hands", "love is control, I'll die if I let go", "I will only let you breathe, the air that you receive, and we'll see if I let you love me". Those words were exactly what I wanted to say but could not express.

I ended up ripping the audio of the rehearsal DVD, burning it to CD and listening to that instead since it sounded better than the actual album, but I did hear it quite a bit back them. I think my main complaint is that most of the songs are too long, repeating themselves needlessly, though some of the coolest parts are only done once (like the "ominous - i am in us" chant part). Some moderation there would've helped the music.

the way i see it, i like the raw and aggressive sound but by no means is it a human sound. i say this because almost all of the drum tracks were literally copy pasted from different takes which makes it sound really artificial. if the drums were done in less takes and were not just copy pasted throughout songs it would be much better imo. you can really hear it in the frantic drum track.

I think when Jason left, James realized the horrible things he’s done and deeply regretted it. He would cope with Alcohol and Chocolate (I’m not kidding btw), he soon decided to get into rehab and therapy. He would manifest his regret into st anger. Each song explained 1. His over reliance on alcohol 2. How he is controlled by his anger 3. The regret and anger of Jason leaving 4. Him reflecting on the horrible things he did 5. James becoming more introverted after Jason left 6. Him confronting the negative emotions and trying to control them 7. He realizes that the emotions can’t overtake him if he finds a way to control them (can also be about Napster) 8. How alcohol has lost him the ability to love 9. The anxiety and fear that those you love (Jason) will leave 10. James starting to put his issues behind him and becoming a better person 11. James regretting on how he was extremely controlling and how the alcohol didn’t fix it, when it in fact would make him go insane (which explains the kill kill kill outro)

St. Anger is one my favorite Metallica records and I listen to it quite often. It's raw and full of emotions, the vocals really fit the themes and the angry nu-thrash riffs. Musically i consider this a important step in the direction of a thrashier modern age Metallica (Death Magnetic, Hardwired). There are so many fast riffs and some really cool drums by Lars (the double bass drum in the title track gets me pumped every time). And i actually like the production for what it is, I don't think that a clean type of production would have fit the songs really... I think I would rank St. Anger as my third favorite Metallica album after 1# ...And Justice for All and 2# Ride The Lightning. \,,/

I like St Anger, because from this album on, the band has gone back to their roots a bit more, to fast, powerful songs. And the sound would have been really cool, if they had a good drummer. In my opinion Lars should change to the management. I see that he is important for the band structure. But that he didn't come up with the idea of taking drum lessons in all these years, I don't understand at all. With a good drummer the band would be great. Because everyone is so skilled with their instruments, except Lars. And he apparently doesn't see the point in changing anything about it, although he would have enough time and money for it. Metallica used to be a musical style-setter, they were an inspiration for countless other bands, but they are not anymore, because Ulrich slows down the others. A chain is only as strong, as its weakest link. I find that a little sad. But I just want an album from Metallica, with a good drummer. Just one ******* album! I like your videos. Greetings from Hannover/Germany.

Some Kinds Of Monster also in two guitar tunings: James: CCGCFAD, Kirk: CGCFAD (James plays on 7-string guitar). Just think to the minor third in the intro. And I think Dirty Window in one guitar tuning. James played Frantic and Dirty Window on same guitar (the Grynch) in 2011 at the Fillmore. There is no justification to use two tunings.

Metallica's crazy tunings from the Black Album onward are the reason I play a 5-string bass. Sad But True is completely impractical to play on a 4-string (Tuned 3.5 steps below E standard), plus that low B string is a great extension of the fretboard.

I have been thinking about St. Anger for a long time, because honestly I like it quite a bit. I guess this is helped by the fact that I actually got into Metallica quite recently, as I can see how someone that had been following from the start and grew attached to the early albums might be disappointed when getting St Anger after waiting for a few years for a new release. I remember that it took me a while to get to listen to it due to all the bad comments I read about it in YT in other metallica songs. And to be fair, the first time I tried to listen to it I think I did not get through even the half of the songs. However, some of them have really grown on me. My take on this album, after reading a lot of commentsis that it tries to reflect, to show the mind of a broken person, emotionally and mentally. And honestly I think if you take it this way, the album is amazing at it. I guess in some ways it could be compared in the concept behind "The Downward Spiral" of Nine Inch Nails, or at least I see some connection (it might just be me as I discovered both not so long ago so I might have made the connection artificially). The snare/trash can sounds, the excessively repetitive/long riffs and songs, the unconnected and/or nonsense lyrics, they are not pleasant because they are not meant to be. They are a reflection of the mental struggle of a person that is fighting its own mind. All these elements represent its thoughts: dark, unpleasant, repetitive; the person tries to fight just for them to come back. You don't enjoy this album, you endure it, and hope to see the end of it in one piece. This is just my take and it is very likely Metallica did not really create the album with this idea in mind, but it has made me appreciate it a lot, even if it is not an album that I listen to that often or with whose songs I'm the most familiar with. Edit: I haven't seen the Some Kind of Monster documentary but I think I should get to it some day. At any rate, I don't think I dislike that mich the shared lyrics writing, I liked seeing Kirk actually wrote a good bit of Frantic, and I guess the multiple writers can help the feeling of disjointed thoughts.

I think that The Unnamed Feeling still the best song in the album, not only for the instrumental part but for the extreme coherence between atmosphere and theme addressed in the lyrics. And in my opinion the best riff of the entire album it's the bridge in Sweet Amber, from 3:45 to 4:25. I don't love this album but I listen to it so many times when I went through a bad period of my life, it makes me feel understood.

Someone on Metal Archives mentioned that St. Anger is exactly what the title says, an "angry" album and it sounds way better when you're in an angry mood. The repetition and a lot of its aspects just flow with your bad mood for some reason and I have no idea why. And that was probably the first time I actually appreciated it a bit more. It took me a while to get into it, but nowadays I actually really enjoy a lot of aspects of the album. There's a lot of emotion put into it and you can tell, I don't think every album should sound like this, but a bit of it once in a while is very nice.

At the 1999 S&M concerts Metallica played 20 songs: 16 in Eb, 2 in D (Devil's Dance, Sad But True), and 2 in C# - but James played the 2 D-tuned songs on the same guitars (black diamond plated explorer), the 2 C#-tuned songs played on different guitars (James/Kirk: deer skull explorer/black flying V - The Thing That Should Not Be; green flame flying V/black les paul - Minus Human) (Maybe Jason played the to C#-tuned songs on the same blue bass, but... Minus Human is a "one-string-song" on bass). Probably the barre chords are more visible in the S&M documentary. ...and the solo in SKOM played by James!
