I still think it was a stretch for mustaine to say he wrote leper messiah, because he said it as if he wrote the whole he song. Writing a chord progression barely even counts as writing that riff
@josemb_1473

Agree, although some of the notes are similar to the demo, Metallica’s version is completely packed and aggressive. It’s a stretch to say these are related. Most likely Metallica forgot about that crappy demo and didn’t even remember it while writing Leper Messiah.

I can hear the bass on IJFA these days. Then again, I went to college for audio production so my ears are legitimately trained to pick instruments apart in a mix, down to a minute level. Before then, I pretty much just thought it wasn't even there. It's definitely there, it's just very quiet. I've heard the same from a lot of other audio producers who are familiar with the album.

Dude. Caught in a mosh is just Anthrax's most popular song. Have you listened to the album fist full of metal? That album has some of best thrash and it's the one that gets them their spot.
@Iconoclysm
@Iconoclysm 5 лет назад
You have to give him a bit of a break as he wasn't around in the 80's to see that Anthrax was one of the most popular thrash bands by far. I would even say that around '87, they were the most well known of the big four. Also, the term big four was coined in the mid-80's, they weren't "given a spot", they were one of the big four.
@timturk1899
@timturk1899 5 лет назад
@@Iconoclysm Most well known in 87'? Lol, where were you? Love to talk. I remember thrash, etc, before it was. Metallica, was by far, the biggest! I remember seeing "Ride The Lightning", day it was released. We ran home, got $3-$4 each, met up. Had just enough to buy it(New Metallica!!!), grey, round, Megaforce Records label(signed by Elektra 2 wks after release on Megaforce, that Megaforce version would be very highly priced, if kept pristine, lol, but we passed it down to my friends brother, etc, keep the ball rolling..), the middle of the album(record). We ran home, blew our minds(there was very little fast metal, you had to search. Fast Punk, but they HATED metal, guitar solos, and would fight "Punk sucks!", "metal sucks!", crips and bloods style, lol! Friend was into Hardcore(punk? "No, that's that English shit!", lol), Misfits, Black Flag(saw "Slip it In" tour show with him), Dead Kennedy's, Suicidal Tendencies-guitar solos in hardcore that weren't Greg Ginn, lol? DRI(45 RPM Single from Inside "Thrasher" mag, when you had to subscribe to get in NY State/most places) before any DRI Record?), and many more, 100 band compilations on 1 record, lol, 10 seconds, some songs, lol The fast hardcore got heavier sounding, the metal getting faster! We had 1st Anthrax, saw Scott Ian in our small city(Ithaca, NY), in a convenience store, "I know you!", I said, he smiled. They were working with Alex Perialis, Pyramid Sound Studio. I believe made 2nd album/EP, introducing Joey on vocals, or next full length album. Made the great "Crossover-(Punk/metal fusion)" album by S.O.D.(Some local punk friends from earlier 80's on back cover, in collage). Metallica were the most known/popular originally, and since, then Anthrax getting popular around the same time as Slayer, 3rd then, as well as Megadeath(Peace Sells, put them on the map(that was just forming). When Slayer's "Reign in Blood" was released, they became metal Gods. My favorite, and maybe the peak of "Holy Shit! Did I just hear that?", period in metal! I remember knowing Newsted would replace Cliff. Everyone knew. Newsted was the biggest Metallica fan, top metal bassist whose dream was to be in Metallica, always wore a Metallica shirt onstage with Flotsam and Jetsam! By the time the Black album was released, they were big stars. Jocks that hated/would fight us for playing Metallica, were now banging their heads, working out cause that music pumps you up! We were evil little Satan's, listening to devil music, anti authoritarian, in a time where if it's not on MTV, it's cause it sucks. Hard times! You really had to be there! And you know it, if you were there. And so many other bands, gone. Big Four, First Four, basically. Never, ever, in my wildest dreams, listening to "Kill em All", and all the hate against it then, think they'd be one of, if not the biggest metal band around, 35 years later even! Really had to be there! And way into it, searching record stores in other cities, usually in the "import" section, where I found "Kill em All"(Venom! Raven, Anvil, etc). Different world? Yes. It's gotten easier. Now just look down and type, watch, or someone will shepherd you, and like sheep, you follow. It was like mining for Gold back then, and valued as! I can frickin ramble on, lol, sorry. The best times, especially when putting in perspective! Glad you were there, and know!

Quick note: The "difference" in the Blackened bassline noted in the video is actually also played by the guitar on the 2nd and 4th refrains of the riff. Also, regarding the Big 4, the members of the Big 4 weren't decided by Metallica; they were decided by the metal community. The Big 4 has been acknowledged as the four bands they are for decades. The shows performed under the moniker followed that -- not the other way around.

Could part the of the "Enter Sandman" riff been borrowed from the Finnish band Stone? They opened for Metallica here in Finland and the album "Stone" is two years older than "The Black Album".

Actually... I just watched a video of Cliff's dad going through his vinyl collection, and guess what - lots of Iron Maiden, so Lars was a tad mistaken. I do get what he was saying, though, and I think that had Cliff stayed with us longer, he could have tried his hand at composing scores for movies. 🤘

As far as the bass "doubling," all you gotta do is look at "One," and see how different bass is from guitar. "My Friend of Misery," "Nothing Else Matters," "Until It Sleeps," and so on couldn't be more separate, but compatible. How is that one even a thing?

I always had an issue with For Whom The Bell tolls, playing guitar along with the song.. “is my guitar out of tune?” No... am I using the wrong power chord... no... oh well... next song... next time I played it same thing... “Was the recording guitar slightly out of tune” ... I guess that solved the mystery... thanks.

Daamn, you got me a bit salty with Anthrax. I love Caught In A Mosh, the solo, the bass playing, the drumming. There's sooo much good musicianship and composition going on in that song. But in that whole band in general. What puts them apart from other Thrash Metal bands of the era is that they got a unique sound. I personally don't hear Overkill, Exodus or Testament sounding that different from one another (and I do like every single one of them!

Anthrax is underrated in how good their actual musicians are. Frank is amazing on bass, Charlie was 2nd only to Gar Samuelson on drums, their riffs are heavy and catchy, Joey is arguably the best singer of the Big 4... Hell I really like most of their solos (Dan Spitz's).

Persistence of Time is a killer album by Anthrax from 1990 those dudes stayed vital throughout their career despite their troubles with their distributors in the late 90s early 2000s going belly up and officially joining the ranks of bands whom can be debated on the "singer x era better than singer y era" basis

I pretty much figured the Ride the Lightning thing, I mean they used the same thing for Master of Puppets and that was the same producer. They recorded Master of Puppets tuned down, and at a slower tempo, and then sped it up on the tape, which is why it sounds so tight, and is slightly out of tune and is why no matter how hard you try, you just CAN’T play that badass 012013014013012201201301401301(24) riff as tight as the recording at full speed no matter how good you are at downpicking and palm muting especially if you match the same tone. Or really most of the rest of the song for that matter. It’s so tight because the real spacing between all the notes is much longer and was still played extremely tight when recording, so then when mixing to the tape and sped up, it made it EXTREMELY tight beyond what people can do. I’ve heard plenty of people get close, but there’s still always a noticeable difference

Myth 5: The doubling guitar parts on bass is one of the resons why the bass disappears, and that along with the guitar tone, the fucking around with the drum sound and turning the bass down in general is why it is almost inaudible. In the chorus of "Dyers Eve" there is a guitar triplet followed by a bass drum and cymbal choke, and on that choke you can hear the bass in the absence of any guitar. Myth 8: The big 4 is the 4 most selling thrash metal bands, Anthrax being friends Metallica would be irrelevant to their inclusion.
