yes, but saucony with the endorphin shift have an entry level, asics have MetaSpeed Sky and Magic Speed, so unfo. if you are not a "top" athlete you can't use properly those shoes
Great review for what look like some great shoes. The stride length/cadence distinction is really interesting, I'm surprised no one has picked upon that before. Plus Pirates of the Caribbean/Gladiator music, wow!
Asics is really bringing it these days. They seem to finally be shaking off their stodgy, conservative image, and being innovative and exciting again 😃
So interesting about the stride vs cadence aspect. Be interesting to see how they differ. I think I do both approaches when picking up the pace (at different times). But I think I might have had better success with cadence approach for sustaining a pace for that fast finish
Good point me too, but I bet we find that it an equal amount of cadence runners prefer the other sky, and vice-versa. Wonder if we will actually be able to try these in the shops or just have to chance and buy it online.
@@RunThePlanet yes I agree, I run shorter races though so I prefer to have as light of a shoe as possible. The Edge would work better for me personally I think because of that
I'm not particularly fast, but I notice when I speed up I tend to open my stride more than increase cadence (relatively ofc). That being said I'm really short (164) and with proportionately short legs I can't imagine being a strider 🤷🏾♂️
Great review as always Ko! It's interesting that Asics is breaking up the market that way. New foam sounds nice. Might be perfect for a marathon PR attempt. Hope you are well 👌
I suspect the majority of runners watching this would be better waiting for the “cadence” shoe, if there really is a difference - although pride will say this is the one for them. Will be interesting to understand the metrics ASICS put on their site to help determine the choice.
Seems like you are training your daughter to take over the family business of shoe reviews at the end. Great video and definitely a pleasant surprise from asics. Funny how seth was teasing about these shoes for a while now but he hasnt posted any video on it yet
Dude! I've been waiting for this video. Thank you! I also wanted to echo your question about stride vs. cadence considerations in the two super shoes (for us non-elites) as well as being excited about a Novablast follow-up with less stack in the heel especially.
I’m jealous you got to try out those shoes! It seemed like you had fun running in them. The color way reminds me of one of my favorite movies that came out before my time, Tron, I think if I wanted to go to a Halloween party, I would want those shoes as part of a Tron costume.
Magic Speed sounds like it's gonna be a banger. My one main question regarding the MetaSpeed Sky and Edge: they're going to have to be teaching people about how to figure out which one they are - cadence or stride runner. And for it to hold any water, they're going to have to specify very clearly what metrics to use to determine which of the two a given person may be. It seems a little tortured from a PR and marketing perspective, but could be worthwhile if it's 1) a meaningful distinction and 2) if the ability to get the necessary metrics is relatively easy and only requires reasonable equipment to measure (i.e. a watch that can read cadence or stride length).
If you have a pair of Metaracers I’m not sure what the Magic would bring to the table? The other two look interesting but waaaay tooooo much price wise! A very concise review as always Mike 👍
One question many reviewers don't answer is how long we'll these shoes last in terms of their cushion and support. Many shoes you go 50 miles or 100 miles (Nike vaporfly), and it's a done deal
Can’t wait to see how we tell the difference between stride/cadence runner. If I run fast (less slow) my stride length and cadence both go up. Perhaps I will need one on each foot? I need all the help I can get.
More choices is not usually best for marketing. I think it may have been better for them to just do their best to make the consumer product somewhere in between and sell one super shoe. Maybe they make an app where that analyzes cadence and stride length and lets you know what you would benefit most from, but even then it might be too confusing.
I like the “science” what ASICS is trying to do. Make a mass produced shoe but have that custom feel based on your run style. I’m a stride runner for sure, at 6’2 when I run quicker paces my cadence may only increase 1-3 more vs my slower runs.
Really informative and thorough review. Definitely keen to give these a try. My interpretation of the graphs was that one group do seem to increase stride length with minimal effect on cadence (approx 32% increase in stride length but only 4% increase in cadence) while the other group have an approx 15% increase in stride length and cadence. Makes me wonder which style is the more efficient/most successful. Ie those that increase stride length would seem to be wasting energy with more vertical displacement, but what is the energy cost of the increased cadence?
i think the idea is that one isn't better than the other. in other words, instead of trying to convert styles, get different shoes that complement your current style. i'm still not sure i'm convinced, but i think that's the premise
I probably prefer Cadence over Stride mostly, but experiment with both. Shame the Sky and Edge are not so clear cut. Looking forward to the Edge review too.
How does FF Blast (in Novablast) compare to FF Turbo (MetaSpeed Sky)? May be hard to tell due to the carbon plate in MetaSpeed Sky and not in the Novablast.
I wonder how many runners are actually aware if their cadence or stride length increases when their speed increases? Seems like an important decision to get correct that a lot of people could struggle with. Kind of reminds me of amateur golfers attempting to buy new golf clubs without getting fitted and buying clubs that do not work for them.
as far as I know, it's kind of a new idea. although, I suspect some brands have been long developing for those different runners, albeit not quite as intentionally. like a lot of things with running, I think runners naturally gravitate towards the things that work for them, even if they might not be able to articulate why.
To figure out if one is a cadence or stride style runner, looking at the metrics in Garmin Connect for example might be useful. Considering my cadence and stride length increase linear when picking up the pace, I'd say the cadence style matches here :)
Thanks for the review, surprisingly I don't like the fit. While the Adios Pro is perfect, the Metaspeed feels too wide in the forefoot to the extend that my foot is swimming in the shoe, which I don't like in a racer. Cheers
The distinction between Stride vs Cadence seems misplaced. I wonder if those really are proxies for heel vs forefoot, ankle mobility, and the amount of plantar flexion or foot strength. Also and of course, runners fall along a spectrum rather than either/or. Also, I'm not sure whether most runners know their stride/cadence style but may know their foot strike.
Great review. My question, however is: If you could only pick one, this one or the Endorphin Speed, which one would it be for a muscular framed forefoot/midfoot striker???? I’m like Nick Barre but at about 17% body fat 🥴
Cadence or stride? Which are you? Which am I? How to tell? I guess the stryd footpod could help identify. On the 'recycling' front; do any companies have an end of life return policy? As an alternative to landfill? Just noticed that the data sets running speeds are 4min/km and faster. I wonder if the divergence in 'style' (running or shoe) is relevant at slower paces.
Kofuzi, you say that this shoe is tailored to “stride-style” runners: Looking at your training data - are you a “stride” or more of a “cadence”-runner?
Got super busy with school and haven't been able to watch any videos recently. Then I got COVID and now I have time to catch up hehe. But really COVID is horrible I am so sick. Please everyone be safe still.
Kofuzi, the upper material looks like the Novablast material, does this run big like the Novablast? Novablast is the only shoe I had to go down half a size to get a good fit.
its very different than the material of the novablast. I didn't need to size down I the nova blast, but the sizing did feel a touch big. this shoe is not like that.
Thanks. One question which will good for me in between Metaspeed Sky Metaspeed Edge and Metaspeed magic. I am 68 and my routine cadence remains around 160 and my stride length varies from 80 to 84 Cms. It is 80 during easy runs and 84+ in speed workouts.
