More like Metroid DREAM because it's more like a nightmare, hah.
Still consistent. This one seems different but the whole premise is hypocrisy within the title's values. Dunkey's review is the joke. Each critique that he makes counters or contradicts another; just how the title fails to produce any sort of recognition of how any previous metroid game became beloved by fans. The spoof review and game both show complete lack of awareness. Yet Dunkey makes it work because the game is so obviously terrible that his review doesn't need to go any deeper in terms of design or specific critiques like a 'dunkview' review. Game bad. Review bad. Review spoof great.
I had a dream last night that Dunkey released a criticism of the entire video game industry and the video was like 1.5 hours long. I watched it in an imax theater and thought to myself "this changes everything". That's all I remember from the dream.
To be fair, he mainly played the Metroid 2 the repeating boring as fuck fall asleep mechanic boss and Dread games which are shit as fuck Metroid games, but decent otherwise games.

Same, but I feel like you can pretty much create your own Dunkview if you just look at his very thoughtful critique of why Samus Returns is a promising but flawed game, and then just run Metroid Dread through it to see which criticisms hold up and which have been solved.
@@Amongie920 it's a game series that gives you super missiles and no further explanation to open green doors with and expects you to figure out that you have to fire 5 super missiles at a door consecutively out of frustration to open it.... A lot of the backtracking is just to find enough super missiles for all the doors. God I hate Super Metroid xD
He does have issues with the dense aspects of classic Metroid games based off his Samus Returns review, so idk if this vid was just an excuse to riff on Metroid or not

Boys, I think I cracked the code. This video is actually a criticism of 2 things: Metroid Dread haters and Metroid Dread itself. For most of the video he's criticizing the Metroid Dread haters, saying generic things like "its 2d" and "unlike God of War which is the best game ever" which are stereotypical views from people who play mainstream games and pass it off at a glance. However about 1/2 way through he starts actually criticizing it, with mostly the parry mechanic and loading screens (there's also the price/comparing it to hollow knight which I'm not sure about). Na I'm just kidding, I don't have a fucking clue if he's serious or not.
"If you remove all the loading screens you're left with 3 minutes of gameplay, look it up" which is obviously not true lol. "You can't parry the robot" he says while the video footage shows Adam telling Samus that she can parry the Emmi. These are just examples of cringey overblown critiques because he knows thats what these people sound like. Its sarcasm and clearly not true which is why its funny.
It's because every bad thing about Metroid Dread is something that's a stereotypical "Bad take". "Graphics bad. It's 2d. It's too much like the others", but they're all actually very valid criticisms.
@@friendlyplaguedoctor8846 Except parrying feels way better in Dread than in SR. For one you can do it while running now, so it doesn't ruin your momentum like in SR. Also there's far better enemy variety, which makes encounters involving parrying way less repetitive. And the other move that used to really kill momentum in Metroid games, the Morph Ball, is also really smooth and enjoyable now paired with the new slide move. It really can't be understated how fun and fluid the movement is in Dread compared to basically every other 2D Metroid.
Dunkey has evolved beyond sarcasm to an entire concept all together, leaving me wondering if he liked the game or not at all, despite thinking I knew him.
I think he liked it with some critiques. Half of these are mocking other people's complaints (too hard, getting lost, 2D, etc.) but half I think are his actual criticisms (parry is the solution to everything, load screens).
Yes these days it's getting a bit impossible to understand. But that's why his videos are so great. There thoughtful, there's usually some giveaways in his videos. Like here, he mentions metroid was always bad, and then says this game ruined a good franchise, contradicting himself, and we know he likes Metriod anyways. He also starts the video of with criticizing like haters, about 2D, which we know hating 2D games is a troll. So you understand he is joking But he throws so many curveballs that make you think otherwise. Like he mentions how this game shouldn't be 60$, he says Hollow Knight is better. Which both things are legit criticisms. He also mentions the repetitive parrying and loading. Which are legit issues It's weird. It's so blue balling. He should do tier lists more often in streams or something. Because the last time he showed a tier list of open world games, he placed RDR2 and SpiderMan PS4, 2nd and 3rd on the list. Which were both shocking to see

I legitimately put off watching this video for several months, since I had not yet finished the game and was worried about potential spoilers. Dunkey never ceases to amaze me, keep up the great work.

And what prompts me to think this is the fact that the video is now in the "more bunkey" playlist of the channel. He probably gave away that we were never supposed to take this video seriously.

Frozen Ape was completely joyless to me, but a lot of people, including Dunkey, talk about it like it's the second coming of monkey Jesus (ice version). So that part's not a good example of him being sarcastic
He's being sarcastic while also pointing out its flaws. But the HK thing is probably facts. Honestly, I doubt he could do a review like this on Hollow Knight because the positives of HK heavily outweigh the negatives.
I think the comments didn't see all the anti-dread videos that were floating around release time and saying "this is $60, oh my god" and God of War received frequent comparisons. Such a weird thing. Good for Dunkey for parodying it

Yeah I totally agree with the criticisms. The EMMIs were more annoying than anything, but you could parry them when they catch you. I think they were trying to recreate SA-X from fusion in a way, but failed horribly. I would have been so happy to see more of a horror element once the X show up again, including SA-X, but that doesn't mean it's a bad game overall. But that could just be me wanting a sequel to fusion for almost two decades and letting a lot of things slide though.
See Dunkey didn't actually hate it because in his previous review, his little brother was holding the controller, which is why he saw the game over screen so much.
This video isn't so much about his real thoughts on the game so much as mocking some of the dumb criticism the game has gotten, like "too difficult" or how some complain about it being "too linear" while others complain about "getting lost". Watch his Dunkreview on Samus Returns, he really praised that game, should make it a bit clearer how much of this video was satire. I really hope he makes a real Dunkreview on Dread eventually tho.
Dunkey, real talk. I heard people at Target saying they didn't want to buy this game because of this video. As funny as this is, lots of dummies out there actually took this seriously.
Everything he complained about is legitimately annoying. The load screens, the linearity, the same bosses repeating, the parries. I think he kind of liked the game but has a long list of legitimate gripes, but he didn't want to do a straight video or people would read too much into his complaints as him not liking the game, so he hid the complaints behind a thick layer sarcasm to let him share his criticism without being able to be attacked by either side.
@@CountOfMonteCristo_ He criticized the games short duration, the high number of long load times, and the over use of the parry mechanic. Which I think together are really the only big flaws in the game as well.
@@mechanicalmonk2020 Yeah, the demo was released yesterday I believe like literally 20 days after the game released. I have it and I like it but if you didn't play the demo it's kinda strange to release it after the game came out.

@@xyannail4678 not strange at all. Nintendo has no incentive to release a demo (and pretty much no first pay game has demos). This shift implies that they missed their expected sales target with Dread and are now putting out a demo to try to get more people to buy it
Correct, but they're extremely short windows and their timing is randomized on every occurrence of a capture. You will sometimes succeed, but by default you should expect not to.

This video is unusually difficult to understand, wrapped as it is in seven hundred layers of irony. However, this is clearly a deliberate artistic choice, mirroring the high difficulty of Metroid Dread.
I love Metroid (even Other M), but he ain't lying. I think there's only 3 people actually buying these games and everyone else just pirates it or just shoplifts them from Target when they're so on sale no one gives a fuck anymore.
There must have been a half dozen contradictions. It's "parrying, the game" but then it's simultaneously too hard. It's a game series nobody plays, but it's also a "once great series". I think he's managed to cover every possible complaint reviewers have about the game, and most games in general, even when the opinions are mutually exclusive.
The Metroid franchise really went downhill after they released Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice. I mean, it was a decent game, but I think it was set in feudal Japan and not in outer space. I don't remember seeing Metroid in that game at all, come to think of it.
