The joke of AM2R is that it was named while a bunch of Metroid 2 fan remakes were STILL BEING DEVELOPED, AM2R is the only one that was actually completed.
AM2R is really good, it's the metroid fan-game that trully made me a metroid fan, I went back and played metroid zero mission, super metroid, metroid fusion and I was really stoked
At least they let it come out before they C&D'd it. Now it's available for all to play. It is part of the internet now, and what is internet may never die.
Fun fact: the best selling game in the Metroid series is Prime. Prime sold 3 million units, meaning, more people have watched this video than have actually played the most popular Metroid game. Please buy Dread when it's out.
You know what I think maybe I will. It looks pretty cool and I genuinely want Nintendo to try more with their neglected IPs. Metroid could become a lot bigger if Nintendo put the effort in, so I’m hoping this one sells well
You're not counting the New Player Control! Wii Japanese version of Prime or the one on Trilogy. Plus, emulation exists and the PrimeHack for Dolphin is amazing because it has mouse-look.
When it comes right down to it, some people like that cryptic-ass bullshit. It makes the player feel more like they're finding something that wasn't meant to be found, and backtracking (annoying as it can be) makes the game feel like a more real world, where not everything is supposed to be accessible. It's not an easy pill to swallow, but for people who want to be immersed in the world, Metroid's design definitely builds atmosphere and feels more "real" as a result of being a road with more potholes. At least that's my take. My biggest gripe with this game is that I have to use the circle pad to move. I firmly believe that 2D games are better with a d-pad.
Your nailed it with your comment, and I can appreciate that this game is built for those completionists who enjoy exploring every nook and cranny as well as people looking to burn a few hours playing something fun. I would love to play through Super Metroid again, and as much as I love the game Dunkey is right about the amount of back tracking. There is nothing wrong with the back tracking, the problem is that I (and many other people of all ages) dont have or want to put that much time into playing a game now and Super Metroid isn't very accessible in that department. The Sonar Pulse isn't at all game breaking or cheap and it would in fact be a godsend for Super Metroid and Metroid Fusion. Also spot on about the D-pad for 2D titles, I can't think of a single one that handles better with a circle pad or joystick.
Dunkey's description of a Metroid Moment is so accurate that I didn't even realise I'd had that exact experience with the franchise until he spelled it out.
His example for fusion was pretty bad though. The game locks you into a small room and forces you to figure out the solution even if it isn't obvious. Regardless of if you can see the bomb block or not doesn't matter because you now know that there are hidden things in this game and with that information you'll know that there is always more to a "dead end" then meets the eye.
@@ASHtheSLUGCAT the thing is there's nothing to figuring something like that out. When you get stuck in a simple area like that, it's incredibly unlikely that you just softlocked yourself unless there was a huge developer oversight, so of course there was something you could do to get out. But when the most efficient way to solving the problem is just blindly pressing buttons until something works, that's just bad design, plain and simple. If the game had included something that indicates an area could be bombed to reveal a secret, such as a discolored floor tile or some sort of object right above the the place that could be bombed, then there's something to it because it's testing the player's observation skills, but it doesn't do anything like that
@@friedbacon6236 This is why I think level-scaling enemies is a dumb solution to a half-problem, and also because it either can't possibly keep up with the player anyway or it makes the game impossible for the player specifically because they got a tiny bit powerful. Dunkey has a huge audience, and this is such a thoughtful critique that I like to imagine some of the devs have seen this video. Which of course makes the omega sarcasm of the Dread video a little disappointing.

This has me excited for Metroid Dread. The same dev team, a lot of the same mechanics, but with new enemies and a lot of room to improve structurally from Samus Returns. I hope I’m not disappointed, and I hope Dunkey loves it too.

There's 1 things Dunky forgot here and that's the fact you can scan in Super Metroid to find those "cryptic" areas in the game. Similar to Samus Returns scanner but on a whole nother level.

But yeah those “cryptic” areas are easily discovered by either using the X-ray scope or in Fusion and Zero Mission’s case drop power bombs
@@niek8877 oh yeah, Power Bombs literally reveal everything... save for the 'fake' blocks. Still, they're easy enough to find, with either them having subtle visual cues, like broken patterns in the scenario, or being in suspiciously empty rooms, and when they're not, they're still mostly for sequence breaking, not crucial progression. We've come a long way after the first Metroid.
I gotta say, I got stuck at several parts in SM, but that lower norfair part was not a problem. The other door is a dead end, it makes sense to try everything on the other side. As for Fusion, isn't there a floor thing right before that? Whether that's the case or not, I was not stuck there at all lol.

When it’s bright you can see a dark blue where the solid wall should be fully black, indicating a passage. But of course, fuck me. That’s the last thing on my mind. I actually x-rayed it and bombed it, but I never actually walked into the damn wall.

In Dunkey's defense, the x-ray scope was pretty tedious to use and didn't completely map out the whole area so you can see where you're at. Not to mention that it's no good in telling you that you needed to use the Power Bomb in a certain glass tunnel so you can go further into the game.
The problem with the X-Ray scope is that, not only you get it late in the game, but also sometimes it doesn't work I remember one part with those green snakes from the wall, looking for were i should go, and it was behind that snake, but the X-Ray didn't show any path, only the wall
Twister vtx That was literally the only point in super that stumped me. I think I eventually figured it out on my own, but that's definitely one of those points where there's no shame in using a guide.
From the way I hear other people describe it, Metroid is the kind of game where you're supposed to explore every inch of the map, master that shit, then speed run until you get to see the hot babe at the end. It's not for everyone, but for people who like what it does, it's the best at what it does.
Wulbulbul Lubbubwublub One strength that is a double edge sword, its so satisfying to find the secrets or figuring out what to do. It force you to explore which make me personally more immerse. On the other end you can find that very annoying. It's a very niche thing in the end.
I agree with Dunkey but I also have to say the combat isn't very dynamic. It's zoomed in so you basically have simple 1 vs 1 battles. You don't have to keep track of multiple enemies while platforming.

Wanted so bad to like this game but the platforming was too hard for me. Difficult is fun, frustrating is not fun. There’s a line between and Guacamelee crosses it.
+Billy Humphrey What? Were you playing it with a controller? Metroidvanias are almost always easier with a controller. Oooh, you're talking about the optional paths to power ups and stuff? Yeah those are harder, but still are optional. The platforming necessary to get through the game is pretty boring I think.

@@riflemanm16a2 The boss fights are REALLY good lol. Challenging, memorable, and exhilarating, with great visuals to back them up. The only one that kind of stunk was that giant armored jungle spider. And I don't even consider that a boss. And I guess Drogyma was kind of lame, especially since it was so generic compared to Kraid.
@@thesnatcher3616 I thought fighting the same Chozo soldier a bunch of times was a little boring, and they weren't very hard; just jump and flash away from them and they can't catch you. The X-Chozos were a bit tougher. The rest of the bosses were good though. I was disappointed that the final form of the last boss was just holding one button until it dies. I wanted to fight that huge thing.

Nexo played every metroid game out there (Zero mission being my personal favorite) and for some reason this game didn't feel so hot to me. I even managed to get it a week before release but still only got two hours into it...
i disagree. tbh, i would rather know that theres a secret in this a room, but it would be up to me to find out how to get it. maybe it removes that sense of discovery for finding that secret, but i think its more annoying to spend 10 mins a room just looking for a secret.
It's really subjective. I for instance loved Metroid Prime's way of handling secrets. It would mix things up a bit. All missile expansions and energy tanks made a distinct sound that you could hear when close enough. It was enough to let you know an expansion was in the room. Some were even visible, but most of the time you couldn't obtain them without getting an upgrade further on in the game. That, or the method of acquiring the expansion was connected to an adjacent room somehow and you had to figure that out. Then there was the scan visor, which was your method of investigating the surroundings and figuring out secrets. It often revealed little hints or openings for you to gain access to, which lead to unexpected findings. It was a great design in my opinion. Dunkey's point with Fusion is something I could agree on. There were quite a number of times where I got completely stuck and the solution was just so stupidly obscure that I could only chalk it up to bad or flat out lazy level design.

Hard to find game developers that have the balls to risk their game's first impressions by deliberately leaving all the inconveniences, annoyances, and bullshit enemies for the player to get annoyed over first before giving them the upgrades that make you feel like you're cheating. It's immensely satisfying and something that's super hard to pull off in a world saturated with XP leveling, skill trees, and skill points.
IMO, this is why I feel like Hollow Knight hit the nail on the head. Hollow Knight had that same sensation for me except the progression was actually intuitive and the only horse shit secrets that you clearly had to Google were completely optional.
@@abbasaltake1414 what is wrong with it? I love it a lot. In super metroid you find a room that gives you a map, in hollow knight you find a guy who gives you a map. It's not that different except in hollow knight the maps cost like, 3 cents instead of being free. And if you are refering to maps being updated when sitting in benches... well, I also kinda prefer it. When playing metroid i was constantly pausing to see the map because it constantly updated. In hollow knight, you arent distracted by the map being updated so you just continue forward and find shit on your own (also i love that you can just press left bumper to see the map. makes backtracking less tedious when you dont have to watch a cutscene of a pause screen opening up).

I saw this video before playing any Metroid games and took his word for it so I bought Metroid: Zero Mission and fell in love with an instant classic-classic. The whole “metroid moment” point has also helped me through finding items in Metroid 2

The Aeon scanner fixes the cryptic stuff, and the bomb spot blending into the background isn't even in the game he's reviewing, it's in a previous entry.
Ernest Mil Fun fact: people who worked on Skyrim did say that they want to make a new Skyrim, but it will take them a long time because they want to make it as good or even better than Skyrim.
This makes me excited for Dread, it's like Dunkey said, Samus Returns had a lot of smart ideas on a more or less stale game concept in Metroid II. With Dread looking like it's a lot more open and more like Metroid, this could be an amazing game coming up
Depends how much you love exploring a huge and beautifully varied world. If you're only in it for the combat then its still gonna be good, but not nearly as amazing.
I very much am into exploration, the combat is only secondary for me in these games, I tried to find another good metroidvania game other than AoS for a while now, and came out disappointed for the most part. But I think this is the game to fix that. Thanks, I'll certainly check it out! :)
Man his complaint for Fusion was EXTREMELY true, I beat the game like just this January and I remember having to look up guide and tutorials multiple times on how to progress in the game, Like I can't imagine a kid 2002 with his dial up, having to look up guides on this game.

I remember the exact point as a kid where I got stuck in Super Metroid: After getting the Ice Beam and you had to climb the shaft. I just couldn't do it, and I'm not 100% sure why, but that's as far as I got in the game until replaying it years later. Metroid was one of those "Have Nintendo Power or prepare for suffering" for the longest time. I never had the patience to beat the original.
I'm still waiting for Mario Odyssey. Just one month to go... just one month... my god, this is painful! I have to suffer one month just so I can finally play Mario Odyssey! How do people put up with this pain?!
this part of the level literally shows up right after u get the bomb ability. U don’t need to be a genius to realize u need to use that ability to get out.
I like the backtracking to a certain extent, it makes me feel rewarded for remembering the things in the map that were not accessible to me before. But when you start backtracking to every single room trying to figure out which one you are supposed to be in to progress, and often crossing that room of the list because you weren't doing exactly what needed to be done in that room, becomes very tedious. The map (usually) does a decent job of showing you the rooms that have secret entrances because when you get there, there is a connected room on the map that has no visible entrance from the room you are in. Eventually you start "thinking with portals" with the map layout, and you start to see patterns of secret rooms in other places, making it a littlw easier to find secrets. That said, there is a bunch of cryptic bullshit that you would never know unless you spent hours doing trial and error. You need to freeze metroids to shoot them with missiles, but in Metroid 1 you can lose the ice beam upgrade, not knowing this, so they put in a SECOND ICE UPGRADE. What was the point of making you lose it then????
As someone who plays videogames spastically, metroid is imposible for me to complete . I mean, there is no way I remember about that wall I couldn't break the last time I played 2 WEEKS AGO ... 😅
This may surprise Dunkey, but the hidden passages and items were one of my top motivators to play Metroid. _(although, it was easier on Prime: the little SFX helped locating them. Always nice to end up being over-equipped for bosses)_
In addition to the sound they make, in Prime 3 later in the game you can activate a beacon thingy that straight-up puts all the item locations on your map.
Dunkey emphasized that evading enemies is more exciting than engaging them; in Dread, using your power ups to avoid these indestructible robots in clever ways will fuel your progress and as Dunk said, make the player feel like they've outsmarted the game despite level design being very deliberate.
Too bad the EMMIs in Dread have retarded toddler AI and are "outsmarted" by continuously jumping in circles. Never been more disappointed in the main draw of a game
I mean, it's more of a chain explosion than a dash, but it's more than good enough. Dread is really good. I would not be surprised if Dunkey gave it at least a 4/5.

Super and Fusion don't need remakes. ZM is the perfect remake, and now there's two choices for a Metroid 2 remake to pick from. It's time to make a NEW and ORIGINAL 2D Metroid title.
Super is nowhere near perfect. There are glaring issues everywhere that are overlooked because of nostalgia and innovtion. It can get a major upgrade, they just need to keep the core gameplay the same. No new major crap, some small additions, polish it up, remake it in new graphics and models, and bam.
Watching this after his e3 video from today, dread looks like it's gonna be great, with a stronger system and not being limited by trying to recreate a very simplified Gameboy game means it has so much more potential
I completely agree with that sentiment on my experience with metroid games. Unless you have a guide its nigh impossible to figure what to do sometimes. My greatest example is this: I'm playing super metroid, having a blast going through brinstar and finding new stuff through my engenuity and observation. Then I get to brinstar depths. Instead of going up first to go get power bombs, I go down, because I figure I could go get them later. But you cant. Instead i get stuck in a pit that requires you to either have ice beam or to do these asinine wall jumps that are nigh impossible. So I get stuck and i cant leave so i just have to dick around in norfair until i find where i have to go and it takes me 3 hours. Even after all that exploring and getting every single room to see what items i need i find I still cant even beat the boss because I needed items from other zones anyway. So they expected me to get the hi jump boots, go back, beat kraid, go back to norfair, go to the rightmost point to get speed booster, go to the exact opposite point on the map to get grapple and ice beam, leave, then do the entire rest of the game before going back to norfair (all while having no map btw since the map in norfair is blocked by a power bomb door)? What. The. Fuck.
