A surprise sequel after nearly 20 years, Metroid Dread brings back the legendary exploration and progression and merges it with excellent modern combat and some of the best boss fights ever.
I'm hoping this does well enough that Nintendo starts investing in Metroid more. Give us the Prime trilogy on Switch next year (or that rumoured Prime 1 remake and 2/3 remasters, either way is fine with me), a Metroid 1 - 4 pack on Switch. Hell, I'm just a newcomer to Metroid, I'd take an Other M port. Just... Nintendo, there are still dedicated Metroid fans and Dread has brought newcomers to the franchise. Why not capitalise on it? Use this as an opportunity to really push Metroid to the big leagues like it should already be in.
@@RandomShinigami7 I'm a series longtimer, and I'd love an Other M port as well. For all its faults, it's a very fun action game. Of course I'd love to have Zero Mission, Fusion, the Primes (including HD versions of Hunters and Federation Force) and HD Samus Returns on Switch.
They said it’s the last game part of the original saga, but won’t be the last game so more 2D games will come starting a new story for samus after this one
MercurySteam giving us a Metroidvania for the decades. Its crazy to think that they are involved in both ends of this genre, working with Castlevania and Metroid
They only give those out to cinematic games that have hamfisted "social statements" they make about our culture instead of actual video games. GOTY has basically turned into the Oscars 2.0.
This is such a great review, with well laid out positives and negatives, interesting comments, a healthy vocabulary when describing its history and nature, and, above all, no lazy comparisons to other games! Nice one, Mr. Samuel Claiborn!
Yeah nice to not hear anything like “‘Metroid dread is the dark souls of Metroid” or “Metroid dread is just like hollow knight but with guns” or anything like that
@@shanelee80 or you are being a tool to what they were saying in that they are similar in genre but nothing alike. Their are limited genres of games and many will favor each other as a base but not in context or content
It’s topping the sales charts in the UK where it’s historically didn’t do well. Think the portability of the switch and how Hollow Knight and other indies introduced new people to the genre have really helped it
@@aeugnewtype Metroid Prime: Federation Force got a 64 metascore. Mario Golf: Super Rush got a 70 metascore. WarioWare: Get It Together got a 76 metascore. Even Skyward Sword HD got an 81 metascore. You're talking nonsense.
Yeah but... I've seen Super Metroid listed as the greatest game of all time, and Prime mentioned in a similar way. Critically they always do great. For some reason they just don't sell as well.
It's not, it's very short and it brings nothing new. You've played metroid or a metroidvania game before? You've already played everything this game has to offer. You can easily complete this game in a day, then it's back to waiting another decade and a half for a new metroid game.
Definitely hasn't been too neglected these past 4 or so years though. Especially with the release of Samus Returns, and Dread. Also with Prime 4 being announced in 2017
Just got this game, and can't put it down. It's absolutely stunning, from the graphics to getting your abilities unlocked and finding new abilities that have been introduced to Samus and talk about that map! It's an actual maze! Let alone the challenge getting through it with that E.M.M.I sensing for your every move. This game is absolutely fabulous in my opinion. Metroid doesn't get enough recognition.
Except they mention Ori & Hollow Knight in the genre - but then say Metroid does it best, but then gives a score of 9 when they gave Ori and Hollow Knight a 10?
@@AndreiChawicz yeah honestly it’s that but also a bunch of people hate IGN so much that they’ll watch their video and comment, the things that help the video spread around and make IGN money, because you know they hate IGN. Sorta like @Ido Sol, perfect example really.
Play Super Metroid first. The term metroidvania came from it and Castlevania Sympthony of the night, 2 of the greatest games of all time, these games inspired hollow knight
Welcome to this wonderful world of Samus. You absooooooooolutely need to play Super Metroid. If you can, maybe even check out Metroid 2 (the gameboy one).
Really happy to hear the "11 hours" playtime. The previous games in the series have an average playtime of 3, which would just not do after the 20 year wait for this game.
@@waffles8144 why would it take so much longer metroid games are incredibly straight forward and easy to understand and play. It’s not like nintendo is capable of making super deep games or systems.
yeah, finally the game has been released!! It seems to run at a rock solid 60 fps and crisp 900p in docked mode, 720p in handheld! Really looking forward to buy it! Who else will buy it, comment down below if you will!
Gotta respect IGN for keeping the spoilers to a minimum. Gamespot's and other reviews (Gamexplain) are riddled with them. Edit: grammar and added Gamexplain as another spoiler review
In the same way that Super Metroid paved the way for SOTN and future generations of great metroidvanias, Metroid Dread has set the new bar for the following generations of metroidvanias and I'm excited for it!
"Everything works in handheld form, but you really have to dock the system to get the full experience." With a single line, hundreds of Switch OLED preorders are canceled.
@@BreakingBlake1 yeah but you’re buying it for the portable screen. If you have to use the tv to get the full visual experience, then there’s no point to getting the new switch.
The OLED is primarily for new adopters. Some owners will upgrade, but they aren't the primary market. They want to expand their market as much as possible and then hit with the Switch successor.
I’ve been hoping for a Metroid 1-4 bundle on Switch, including Samus Returns and Zero Mission, especially as there’s not a lot of great ways to play the two GBA games these days. Ditto for a Prime Trilogy on Switch!
My first metroid game was Prime in '02. A truly glorious time in my life. After getting through all 3 Prime games (and ignoring Other M, though maybe I'd be open to a revamped HD port) I've slowly worked my way back to the 2D games. I'm currently playing through Fusion on my no-longer-collecting-dust Wii U's virtual console. It was a great use of $8.61! I'm totally ready for Dread now!
love it the exploration and the feeling of progression amazing it also introduces fear into you a bit when you have to sneak past the emmis that feeling of something virtualy invincible and able to oneshot you makes it more satisfying when you finaly beat them
IGN: Mentions Ori & Hollow Knight (Gave both a score of 10) Also IGN: But Metroid proves it still does it best - Gives score of 9 IGN: Still making no sense since 2011
@AstonishingRedd the score has nothing to do with this review. It is all about the content and quality of the review. This review has substance, something that is lacking in many of their other reviews. Ign needs to use the outline of this review as a base standard for all reviews.
Being a metroid fan its like being fan of ambient music, its like an acquiered taste, everyone seems to acknowledge that it is a great piece of art, but few really gets it.
Oh how I’ve dreamed of housemarque making a Metroid game. Returnal was very close and is EASILY my game of the year and best 5 game by a mile. But the story and character elements and potential Metroid could bring and housemarque’s crack cocaine gameplay would be a match made in gaming heaven
2:21 At least the QTEs are not as intrusive as, say, Sonic Unleashed. And If you counter correctly during said events, you get to get all up in their face and unload on them during the cutscenes, _in real time._
yeah, some of the bosses are fantastic, while some others aren't as well designed. This comment is a great way to show the difference between listening and hearing what is being said.
Pretty sure with the exception of 1 boss in particular, they don't require you to counter to the QTE to beat them, you can still just wail on them with missles, it will just take you longer to kill them vs executing the counter. Otherwise players with slower reaction time would never progress.
