Spot on review. Interestingly, even though I haven’t the chance to play the remaster it is how I remember/visualize the original. The changes are astounding! Can’t wait to replay it someday.
The gamestream and ending boss are so amazingly colorful I was blown away. AND I played the GC original game too. Wow, just wow. And you can play it portably with OLED graphics... omg take my money! 😀
The only thing that helps is we've played it before and the graphics are the only difference. I'm playing the original now so I can be blown away when I start playing the Switch version.
I had friends over this weekend, and only saw "Metroid Prime Remastered now available" on the Home screen of his switch that this was even a thing. MP was by far one of the best games I ever played on Gamecube. Wish they'd remake Twilight Princess for Switch too.
This is the first side by side visual comparison I've seen, and it's jaw dropping! I don't care that i already own the whole trilogy on WiiU, I AM going to get this eventually.
Great review! A masterpiece of gaming in any era. The amount of improvements made to the game is just staggering! I've been building my collection on my Xbox recently but this is the game my Switch collection has been waiting for. Roll on payday! I hope I can add this to my physical collection of games. Can't wait!
I’ve never played the Metroid prime games….I was always a bigger fan of the side scrolling Metroid games which I’ve played and beat each one many times over…..I always regretted not playing this series…..And I’ve been waiting for this day to come👍🏻🙂Looks like I’ll be getting the best version when playing these in 2023.
What a classic. The twin sticks and updated graphics make it feel fresh and new. Let this be the norm going forward, but I hope they do this more in the future.
Awesome. When I first got Metroid Prime, it was the Gamecube original for my Birthday back in 2004. But personally I wanted Metal Gear Solid: The Twin Snakes because I was curious about what the Remake is like.
It seems to me no one really notices with this quality of the remaster means. In my opinion, this is the Metroid prime four engine running in front of our eyes. And hopefully I’m not just being optimistic when I say I think Metroid prime two and three are also going to use this engine meaning by the time all four games are available, they will have parity in terms of graphics, and I think that might be the greatest news and effect of this series, or any video game series in general, would want for a franchise they love.
I've heard the remaster uses the exact same game code on an updated version of the original engine; If true than most of the game's guts are optimized for the Gamecube, giving more performance room to push visuals to this extreme. I think Prime Remastered is the best looking game on Switch, beating Luigi's Mansion 3
The game's engine has come full circle. It was born using Metroid Prime as a base and now it's been fully optimized to run the same game that was created 20 years ago with stunning results.
@@jphataraki6764 They chose to use AA to sharpen the image instead of raw resolution to put more quality in the assets. This will work better in the long run as any re release or emulation will have the benefits of higher resolution rendering while keeping these higher quality assets
Yeah it's running the GC engine with a texture makeover, it's also the reason it performs so well on Gamecube (and Switch) since only 1 or 2 rooms are loaded at any moment so it doesn't tax the console.
Fantastic review. Just completed my first playthrough of Remastered. Really is a an incredible achievement. I hope we see 2 and 3 get this same treatment. I feel they are often overshadowed even though they are both great games in their own right.
Gyro aiming can also be enabled in dual stick mode. I think it's the best overall control scheme, as you can use the gyro at any time without needing to hold down a button. I use the right stick for coarse camera control and the gyro for more precise aiming. Great for things like shooting clustered enemies without having to lock onto each one first.
Technically, the most recent Metriod before Prime was Metroid Fusion, not Super Metroid. Fusion was literally a day earlier on November 17th 2002, Prime was the 18th.
I played this game repeatedly on the GameCube in the early 2000s. It's one of my all time favorites. But due to its control scheme, I found it hard to recommend and a little weird to go back to. Now I have a version of the game that looks better and runs on the Switch. And it features modern first-person adventure controls that fit the game very well. Incredible remaster.
It's actually quite astonishing what Retro (and Iron Galaxy) have done. I echo your sentiment about the Switch. It could've done this the whole time? 😦
Seeing the comparisons are shocking. While playing MP remastered I kept thinking “wait does this actually look better?” Because a lot of the time I kept thinking it’s how the game looked in the first place. But when it’s side by side it’s really obvious.
I love this this game so much, you have to make these quality of life improvements. This would make this game much more fun & enjoyable, we need 30 pin drops in different colors, auto-saves through every door & when getting a collectable, elevators should be marked as A,B,C etc on both ends. east, west north south doesn't really help, Where is screw attack? Metroid Prime 2 Echos has it. Since the space pirates can fly but we can't! We should be able to activate the hint instead of waiting if we need it. More missile refill stations or save points should refill ammo especially since there aren't enough of them. There's a heavy draw on missiles with charge beam upgrades, when you collect an item the map should show it. I don't know why Samus fires several shots now before charging it's terrible & makes it much more difficult fighting bosses especially Ridley. It takes too long to charge your weapons. Honestly it feels like the only improvement on this game is the graphics. I love the gyro controls but side strafe blast boost needs improvement like Metroid federation force has.
Unlike today's normal controls, you couldn't look around with the right stick. Instead, it used old-school tank controls, where turning the camera left and right was done by moving the left stick left and right (you couldn't strafe unless you were holding the lock-on button). In order to look around, you had to come to a complete stop and hold the R button, also using the left stick to point the camera. The right stick was used to change beams. You can still use this old control scheme or modified versions of it in this new version of the game and I think they work just fine, but they're outdated and clunky, so new players should probably use the modern controls instead.
If they do a dual analog three I think I will have to buy it. That game was hard to master due to having to hold the wii. Nice in the way it moves but hard if you wanted to chill and play.
I happen to find One technical issue relax it's very minor and kind of funny when you reach the talent Overworld various spots that you can stand we're rain doesn't rain on you because of the trees covered the rain which is just so very realistic but if you stand underneath your gunship rain goes right through it for some strange reason which brings me to the biggest problem in the game and I'm thinking that everybody will agree after you complete the game it's just leaves you wanting more the beautiful thing is is that we know that there is more and when they first leaked the remake they said the whole trilogy was done but Nintendo will probably strategically release it until Metroid Prime 4 is ready to go and to team retro at this point I say take all the time you need in the meantime we still have two sequels to get and the fact that this game is only $40 just absolutely mind blowing I haven't seen a game this pretty on the switch since Doom eternal on the GameCube this game had a ton of polish this is some kind of Next Level type polish very seldom seen by man 🤣🤣🤣
Ok I agreed, it is truly the best remaster that switch can handle, but is not perfect, in my opinion the missing lighting while shutting is a very big issue.
The reviews on this game including this one are a little misleading. The game in person does not look as good as it is presented on RU-vid videos. It looks good on the Switch, but could be better. As soon as you dock it the visual problems become obvious. I've had to fool around with the settings on my LG OLED way too much just to get it to where it is. I don't think it was designed to be played on large screens.
Hey there, the capture shown is taken directly from the Switch while docked. If anything the game should be clearer in person without RU-vid compression.
