Metzeler Karoo 4 review, off road, mud, sand, forrest roads
Part 2 of my long (well not so long so far) time review of Metzelers Karoo 4 adventure tires. And hell, today I went deep, deep into the mud and it wasnt nice for a while.
Do you want to see how Karoo 4 handles deep mud? Do you want to finally hear the sound of my bike? Yes, I got it right, finally!
Anyway, tires are off road beasts, I have to learn much

We have all been there. Good for you for getting out there and testing your limits; this is how we learn. Traction control is not a bad thing on mud. Dropping the power and easing off on the throttle response. The tires will clear mud, but they must be spinning to build up enough centrifugal force to fling out the mud. Ideally, you also drop the tire pressure some. Along with my big (Tiger 800) ADV bike, I also have a little WR250R with MT21s on the rear. Living in the rain forest of Vancouver Island (Canada), we either ride in the mud all winter or don't ride at all. The MT21 has very aggressive side lugs that allow the tire to climb out of ruts and catch well when the bike gets sideways. Picking up a nice cheap little Dual Sport bike is a great way to build skills on mud. I like TCK80s on the rear for muddy trails on my big bike. They don't last long on the pavement. However, as you have seen, if you don't have traction on a big ADV bike, life sucks. I have also been told that Motoz Tractionator RallZ is a good choice. BTW I run IRC TR8s on the front of both bikes.

Thanks for the review. Rally mode probably wasn't helping in that situation. Tire doesn't seem too bad.. sticky mud will wreak havok on most tires tbh..

In times like that where I've had the tyre spin, I used traction control to good effect to get me unstuck. Happened in a super narrow grassy/muddy patch of the TET in Galica. With thorn bushes touching the bike either side so no option to turn around.

Once wet clay gets between knobblies no tyre can grip. Need to be going fast enough to spin it out or fast enough for momentum to carry you through. Sand naturally drops out if it is dry so that’s why tyres usually work ok and they can bite when they re-enter the sand.

Nice tire review. Yap, that mud that clings to the tire it's no easy for any tire, IMHO. Even the tires design 100% for offroad became slick. It seems to me that this Karoo 4 could be an interesting option to the Bridgestone AX41. Have you had the chance to try them in wet tarmac, gravel, sand? Thanks.

Hi. After camera battery ran out, it started raining, pouring is better word. I was riding through other forest roads and gravel/sand paths. The tire performed very fine. Wet grass was tricky on one occasion, but I was crossin a slope of looong wet grass and rear slided down the slope. The tire and bike recovered nicely almost instantly. On tarmac I have no clue yet, I have to say the tire doesn´t make me very confident in leans. It´s because (I think) there is point in the lean, when the tire just falls into a lean and you instinctively pull it back, probably its in the moment tire reaches space between side and central knobs. Considering the tires are still fresh, I want more dirt under them until I start leaning hard. Btw front tire still have mold snakes on it, the compound is very hard. I didn´t have too much time for bike, hopefully that will change next week.

I mean, it didn't look too bad, judging by my 790 Adv R + e07 (which are considered "crap" in mud) experience. From what it seems, I'd say Karoo 4 behave about the same as Karoo 3: quite OKish in dry everything, really trash can junk level for anything wet (probably including the asphalt), crap longevity too. Thanks a lot for the review, was helpful!

Bike sounds really good with the Remus. Rumbly, but still discrete.

It sure does and it is still within legal demands. No decat, DB killer in... Compared to Akrapovič, REMUS is infinitely better sounding one IMHO

Great Stuff! Its not embarassing - everyone lands flat and gets up again. We all learn. My guess: you were to slow and too aggressive on the throttle at one point. The key is going faster and with constant throttle. I would go with the regular Offroad Mode and a little traction control because if you mess up the throttle, it wont spin up all the way until you slide to the side. Anyway great stuff and thanks for all your effort with the Camera etc.! Greetings from Germany and: you can never walk the bike away when there is no traction on the back - at least sitting far at the back and stomping with one foot should do it.

Thanks for your kind words. I kinda know what was wrong. The thing is when I saw that mess I was thinking something like: "This is suicide, should I even go in?" I was prepared for the fall. I am not sure if going slower would help, the mud was really extreme under water. Finding the path with least resistance is the thing experienced riders should do, anyway right?

@@cloudjumper8868 Hi! first of all: i am not a Pro or anything in that way. I just rode a 790 ADV almost 2 years and then bought a 890 ADV R. Ive learnt from my friend slowly to ride gravel and later Offroad. As i live in Germany, i have almost no chances to go Offroad - just illegal which i dont mind that much ;-) I did a Enduro Training lately. There ive learnt (the hard way of course), that going slow is the worst you can do on bad tracks/trails and stones. If its wet and muddy, this changes a lot but here i also agree: if you have to cross such a section, do it like a Chris Birch and fire the 1st or 2nd gear all the way through. I mean its obvious: if you go slow in mud, you will stuck at one point because the tire will fill up with mud. And then you will end up digging/pulling your bike out or pushing it with at least one extra person. If youre alone, you mostly get stuck because youre afraid to go through it and mess it up. Ive fallen like 10 times during the Enduro Training, only because i hesitated - but as a noob you dont know which speed is correct to go. Correct: a experienced rider will always look for the least resistance / the best path to go through. Keep your ride safe! And: if youre not sure - just step off the bike and walk the trail to see whats coming before you go and later realize: SHIT :-) sometimes saving the energy is more important than pulling and pushing a bike around for an hour.

@@zerotonine807 Thx for input. As I said in the video, it was all fun, even the part with falling and getting out was superb. If I had not the intetion to put the tire into test, I wouldnt go there, but I am glad i did. Ride safe too!

I did that up a hill on the weekend out of a creek up a rutted hill lol I have seen Motoz tractionators get through mud like that with little issue

Mud and deep Sand are bitches. I don’t think the Karoo 4 is made for either condition. Maybe next time TC to 5 and throttle to Off Road when you stuck, and it will go easier on you. Nothing to be ashamed off tho, it’s normal to slip :)
@cloudjumper8868

Hey thanks. KAROO 4 are supposed to be replacement of KAROO 3, heavily offroad tire. I think this is the - maybe extreme but still - terrain the tire is supposed to handle. But as I said before, I did purposefuly choose the worst terrain and path aviable to see what it does. And I am not ashamed, it was fun and challenging with healthy doses of adrenalin 😀
