Time for another Mew Mew Blog Thingy. This time, I tackle the big 3 terms that have been subject to translation debates from fans, fansubs and official translations alike.
I always preferred "Ribbon" as well, but "Reborn" wouldn't be awful, since they're utilizing DNA of endangered species, so it could be a nod to reviving the almost extinct species, I dunno. :P Also, any way to find out what "Check" means on Ichigo's attack? It doesn't seem to make sense.
+Hugo Santos I like to think that the Check in Ichigo's attack is meant to be like the term used in Chess when you counter/corner your opponent, but I haven't done any research.
There's also the fact that in the original Japanese manga, the choonpu isn't blocky like the rest of the phrase indicating it's not part of the word. The Singapore version also screwed up and used 'metamorphosis' a few times.
Huh, that's an interesting point about metamorphosis and metamorphose. However, I do think "mewtamorphosis" is a cute and clever pun. I personally don't think it matters if you use the noun or the verb, as most Japanese superheroes just yell out "henshin", which is a noun. I think the translation comes across just fine.
+Miharu Watanabe Henshin can be either a noun or a verb, depending on its usage (ex: When it's shouted by itself, it's the verb "Transform!"). The point with Mew Mew is that they were trying to say Metamorphose in English, so there was a clear right and wrong translation. The pun is cute and, as I said, a couple of dubs did use the pun but keep the proper grammer. The French dub says "Mew-tamorphose" and the Hebrew dub says "Mew-morphose!"
+HikaYagami I understand. Just a classic example of hearing a word wrong, I suppose. Actually, watching these videos has inspired me to take a look at poor anime fansubs. XD
I know this might not sound as relavent but I think the reason why the Mews shout Ribbon before the attack is because: DeoxyRIBONucleic Acid. Plus DNA helixes kinda look like ribbons too!
Hey! Would you like to do the same thing like Mew Mew blog thingy but with Mermaid Melody? :) And just about Dren's VA I re-watched all of the episodes and I only can hear Ana Maljević :)
Hika, will you ever do videos about the Singapore English Translation manga? I remember you saying at the end of your Tokyopop/Kodansha video that you would!
+CureMewPeach She did say she'll get to it eventaully, seems the 7 parter blogs will have to take priority, concerning the differences within the Anime/Manga versions.
Yay! I always get excited when I see you've posted another blog thingy. ^_^ And I can't wait for the next one. Do you think at some point you could fan characters and fanfiction, and the most common tropes people tend to use in them?
Oops, I meant to say could you talk about those subjects. >. < I know you probably picked up on that, but it just bugs me when I forget to include words in my comments.
Hey Hikayagami, I hoping you would do a Mew Mew blog thingy on the similarities between Sailor Moon and Tokyo Mew Mew, as many fans compare the series to TMM and some people think TMM took ideas from the series
+Ophl If I did that, then I would have to lump all magical girl shows together since they have the same similarities too. It's just part of the genre. People tend to compare them to Sailor Moon because it's the first Magical Girl show they've seen.
+HikaYagami Actually, what you say there is true; all magical girls have similarities and, well, Sailor Moon, being the "breakthrough" for the genre, will be the source of inspiration for a lot of magical girls. More specifically, I think you should do a video on how TMM and SM -are- similar, but that's because SM has had a huge effect on the MG genre as a whole and is the origin of several MG tropes as Evangelion is the origin of many different anime tropes and archetypes. Basically, a video on how TMM is NOT a Sailor Moon rip-off like people claim.
It's weird how the text is in English in the first place. I know they used to live in England, but it'll most likely be a Japanese computer. Unless it's the same computer Prof. Shirogane used to use had it somehow survived the fire.
While it's clear that it's most likely Ribbon, since the Mews metamorphose, it would make more sense for them to say Reborn. But that's a writing mistake, not a translation mistake.
... What are you talking about? I'm not posted up any subbed videos. If you're looking at the Jumonji Girl fansubs, I've said in another video that while they fixed some mistakes the old fansub did, the created new ones. Fansubs are not translated my professionals. So there will be mistakes.
I know right? Has to be. Or more likely, she's in the Mafia.....has them connections going. *Cracks knuckles* listen here... I need a translation for the mew series... from french... B-but HikaYagami-sama i-i don't know any french I-i--- BY SUNDOWN. *Gulps* Y-yes!! Whatever you s-say!! P-please don't hurt me or my family!!
+The Interface English has letters and sounds that the Japanese don't have (Q & X for example). Also, the Japanese writing system doesn't have standalone consonants, except for the letter N. The best they can do is spell it as close to the English sound as possible, with varying results.
+Kacperski Tokyo Mew Mew was the original version, so why it finished is a no-brainer. Mew Mew Power had good ratings when it aired on TV but 4Kids couldn't get a merchandise deal, so they didn't bother to dub the 2nd half of the series and let their rights to dub the show expire.
Kacperski There were some MMP dubs that did finish the series due to high demand from the fans. I was hoping to sub the French dub since it is one of them but I have yet to find any translators willing to stick to the project.
+HikaYagami Cuz i went on Yahoo anwsers and it says that MMP stop cuz of Renées weapon (religious reason) and TMM stopped because of last episode with nudity of Aoyama Masaya but i will go with yours seen as your the expert : )
now I don't know if my country did it right, or if it should be considered a pun. we never said "metamorphose". instead, we said "mewtamorphose". then again... didn't the English dub do that too?
+Foxy Movies Seems like you guys had the proper grammar at least (apparently, the one who translated for me concerning the Portugal dub as wrong XD). The English dub says "Mew-tamorphosis". Pretty ironic that Portugal's MMP dub had the grammar right and their TMM dub didn't XD.
+Foxy Movies No. Portugal had 2 dubs. One that dubbed the first half from the English MMP version and then a dub of the 2nd half that was dubbed by a different company that came from the Japanese version (although the Italian names were used for the male characters).
+HikaYagami oh. that terrible dub. I cringe when I hear the names and the voices. Aoyama was the only one I recall having the same name. but I don't think I've ever seen it on TV. just the first half.
