This video shows some of the visual edits done to the first 13 episodes of Tokyo Mew Mew when it was dubbed into English by 4Kids.
Note that I say "some." There were so many that I could fit all from the first 13 into a 10 minute video. So I just took the most important ones.
This is basically a side-by-side picture comparison. The top will show which version the show is and what episode it's from. The green arrows will point out some of the less obvious edits(which is especially helpful since the RU-vid screen is so small XD). There will also be commentary on the bottom.
Part 2 with edits from episodes 14-26 will be up soon.

I'm really confused as to why 4kids felt it necessary to remove Kishu's hip bones when they made him Dren. Like, I get they kind-of-maybe point to his crotch, but if that's such an issue, why is he allowed to have a bare stomach and also wear pants that, logically, should fall off (at least more than that one time Zakuro clocked him. I loved that part.) I mean, look at the damn things! They're low enough to be showing some amount of crotch area if he was a human. That's why you can clearly see his HIP BONES. Did children not have hip bones back then, or something?

Yup, much of the 4kids edits are a bit racist, in One Piece they changed a pirate's skin color from black to white I think it was from the buggy crew

Why does 4kids have to censor the most harmless things! Seriously, replacing chopsticks with spoons, or harmless word censorship, are they afraid that the kids who are watching this couldn't figure out what a chopstick is or read some harmless text? It's like 4kids thinks we're all stupid and brain dead, so they have to literally spoon feed us with this bull sh*t of an anime dub! And this is why i watched the subbed version instead..

It's super odd. They acknowledge different languages as Zakuro/Renee's able to speak multiple languages ironically including Japanese. So maybe it's extremely hypocritical or inconsistent?

Why change words that are already english and correct? I understand driving in the streets, but why flip pictures on a wall? and zakuro/renee can't wear a cross or it might imply her being religious? it would've explained why she have A CROSSED SHAPED MAGICAL ITEM! OK...I see why the pulled the plug at 26 episodes.

@Janeiro I I was only offering an opinion based on SOME of the English dubs I have seen which do the same thing I am aware that NOT all English dubs change or censor things in this way. Just because I was offering a similar instance that I find amusing does not make me "an ignorant pos"

Funimation should redo this over ageing like they did One Piece and Dragon Ball Z, they used Japanese words and put subtitles in English. They also did it with Sengoku Bassara. Thank god that 4Kids has gone out of business could you imagine what they would of done with Sengoku Bassara? Eeeewwwwww makes me want to barf at the mere thought.

OH AND I FOUND SOMETHING ELSE OUT!!!! In the church scene in MMP, when Dren is standing on the cross (now a pike) says, "Did you hear about her latest role? She's staring in the production of the Cyniclons", when he says "Cyniclons", 4Kids missed an edit and the pike is shaped like a rectangle again. IF THEY HAD LEFT IT IN, THEY WOULDN'T HAVE HAD TO HAVE THAT HAPPEN!!

Actually Japan just isnt populated by soccormoms thats why they can cuss in kid shows, kids are already taught to be respectful because its in their national culture to be humble and respectful. American culture is the complete opposite, its about being uncivilized, vulgar and obnoxious so if the culture is that bad then the children have no reason not to copy it here. AND Americans have the worst parently ethics too, where they blame the product for their child's ignorance and not themselves.

It's a shame that Tokyo Mew Mew fans will never receive an uncut English dub of this show. 4Kids made sure of that, all because they wanted a Sailor Moon-style hit. Biggest surprise is that 4Kids didn't bother editing Ichigo's sailor fuku.

Her finding the marks was still a plot point, so they kept them only in the first episodes each character was introduced and in transformations.

@iadoptedapenguin I doubt it. For one thing, he's a guy and most guys don't have that problem and the reason why he's skinny is because their food resources were limited. So him not eating much wasn't his decision XD. 4Kids did it because they thought they were crotch lines. The Korean dub did the same thing.

The only time speech is offensive in Japanese is when someone speaks to someone else in the wrong politeness level. Example: There is a certain way to talk to your friends or people close to you, but if you talk like that to someone you don't know or an elder, it's considered offensive in Japanese. There are times when things like that are translated as curses in subtitles.

No they didn't. Fansubbers at the time tend to add curse words to the subs in order to make the shows seem more adult. While Quiche did address her in a rude manner, he never actually cursed. What he actually said was "Hey, you girl over there!" in a low politeness level and she was mad that he didn't use pronouns used for extreme politeness since she thought of herself as royalty. And he said back at her that she had a bad attitude.

Because of what you just said. They are not crotch marks. They're stomach lines to show how skinny he is (certain scenes prove this). Because of the fact that some people, including yourself, mistake them for crotch lines, 4Kids decided to erase them.

At least they weren't as bad as with the One Piece dub. Also the cross one I can understand. One plus for the 4kids version is I find their music better/ more catchy. EDIT: I watched a more of the show, switching back and forth, and realized that Quiche loses a lot of his character in the 4kids version. ex: all of him actually liking Zoe/Ichigo instead of him just being creepy. We can't be humanizing the bad guy or giving people the idea of a ship with the bad guy.....

@Raegh Well, 4Kids never released DVDs for this show, not even the edited ones. I had to import them from South Africa. I also have all of the original Japanese DVDs.

Not the English dub. Sonic in Japanese says 2 cuss words in English XD. As for Mew Mew, 4Kids lost the rights. They're not allowed to do anything with it.

1: I have no idea. 2: Nope it's not. The stomach lines are gone, so it's most likely just an optical illusion. 3: Nope it's not. The DVDs for both shows are different in quality. The MMP once just got encoded like that. I tried to restore it the best I could. 4: If you're talking about the picture in the book, they're the same size.

Well, erasing the kanji and culture-specific foods kinda makes sense, but the rest of the other stuff is just pointless! Christianity is a much bigger religion (if you wanna call it that) than in other countries, and they edit out all references to it so they won't offend people? I'm a Christian and I find it offensive! (Still, their editing skills are pretty good. It's just what they do with it that ticks me off)

They mainly mirrored scenes to make it look like the characters are driving on the right side of the road like Americans do. Although this might cause confusion to other countries that use the English dub since most drive on the left side XD. The hand edits were done so the parts around the car scenes would remain consistant.

...there are a few edits that are ok. A FEW. Like changing the text for the gymnastics competition center to "Regional Gymnastics Championship" that one is logical. One of very few logical ones. The other semi-logical one is where they made the text INSIDE of the Red Data Animal's pamphlet into English. otherwise wow, we see why they lost dubbing rights.

@jouchikitsune As I put on top of the first episode, they made episode 12 into the premiere, thus making 1 into 2 and so on. It stays like that until episode 13. Since they made 12 first, episode 13 takes place after 11. In order to do that they took out all flashbacks refering to episode 12 and added a scene from episode 11 to be a flashback instead. That way, Ichigo would be afraid of Aoyama seeing her on TV instead of the cherry tree incident.
