Despite Jesse being a legal green card holder, we were told flat out that she needed a visa because she's Brazilian. Turns out, as of 2022, Brazil requires a visa to enter Mexico, but usually, an American green card is all you need. Yet, the twist came with Jesse's green card situation-it was in this renewal phase where she had an expired green card but a valid extension document, the i797 form.
In a nutshell, after a rollercoaster of efforts, including a dead-end visit to the Mexican consulate in Portland, countless calls, and even reaching out to the wedding coordinator in Cabo for help, we found out that flying directly to Mexico was a no-go for us. Every airline refused us despite clearances we thought we had. So, we got creative and find a different way into Mexico...watch the video to figure out how we did it!

If the border official does not let you in the airlines have to bear the cost of bringing you back so they do not want to take the risk.

Ya that's what the airline agent told me...just frustrating to have so much bureaucracy involved...ended up being fine, just a lot more expensive of a journey than what I initially wanted lol

She's Brazilian. Of course she won't have a problem.

The reason for this is that the staff at the consulates are never held accountable when they mess things up.

Seems like there is a lot of miscommunication when dealing with consulate, immigration and government agencies

@@thetraveleditorofficial Try writing a compaint to the Mexican Foreign Ministry. I can bet a double shot of tequilla they will gaslight you to the effect that nothing of the kind took place (at the consulate) and that you should have explained your situation to the consular officer who thought they were dealing with a regular Brazilian passport holder with no green card, or something equally preposterous. Of one thing you can be absolutely sure: they will NEVER admit to having screwed it up. But write a complaint anyway, the reason they are so incompetent and arrogant is that nobody ever bothers to complain to their bosses. It won`t get them fired, but next time chances are they will respect (their own) law.

This video highlights a big problem with the US immigration system.

Whats up, mexican-american here, yeah sometimes the airlines are disgusting because they pick people at random for whatever reason and they dont follow the " laws " in mexico, im happy that you went and walked through the border to make it easier on your vacation, thats what my mexican born mother did to get back to the USA, she walked through the border at Tijuana, MX mind you, she had covid, they waved her through, she went to San Diego and took a flight back to the Bay Area but she had to sleep at San Diego airport for a few hours.

@@thetraveleditorofficial As a frequent traveler (sometimes with a note verbale as a diplomatic traveler) the times I've run into idiocy because of adherence to "my system won't allow it" could fill a book. This is especially true on the US side, so I'm not surprised. One thing about immigration officials is that in most systems, they have discretion, and this means if you get the wrong person, they can block you because something "seems off" to them (on the other hand, you can get the right person who lets you in even as the exception, if your explanation makes sense).

@@nippolitica The "system won't allow it" drives me crazy...but it's funny how if you happen to know a superior or an insider in the company they can all of the sudden "override" the system lol...but yes immigration is a mixed bag for sure

@@thetraveleditorofficial Ha! I had this exact situation just happen with a recent airline card I got. Based in Japan, but have a US address, and it got locked... for use in Japan. When the whole point of me having it is because I live in Japan and fly back and forth, and the issuer knew that. Took me *five* people on a four hour call before I finally got to a senior supervisor who cleared it. Everyone else? "You'll have to come to a branch in person and prove your identity." Obviously impossible. The fourth person, thankfully, said "wait, I ran into this issue before and I think I know exactly who to call, I think" and transferred me to that senior supervisor. He did confirm--anyone lower than him would be blocked by the system. Incredibly annoying.

Third countries may honour US-specific documents, but are under no obligation to do so. Form I-797 A is something US immigration officials recognise, but there is no legal framework for others to do so. That is why we all have passports that are internationally recognised, and a system with visas or visa-waivers. It's sad that the US administration is so backed up, but I'm afraid getting a visa was the easiest thing to do in this case.
@thetraveleditorofficial
@thetraveleditorofficial 3 месяца назад
Yes the simplest thing would be if the US immigration wasn't so backed up, but I don't see this changing for a long time.

So could you theoretically sue the airline due to extra costs and pain in the @$$ they caused you, due to bs info they have?
@thetraveleditorofficial
@thetraveleditorofficial 4 месяца назад
Well no because "technically" they followed the rules set by the Mexican consulate...however it seems that nobody who actually works in Mexican immigration cared at all...the airlines told us that they get fined if they don't follow the rules...basically it's all a computer algorithm that tells them what they can and can't do now...no logical human processing skills for anything anymore
