Thank you for an incredibly informative session. Will anxiously await the release of Susannah Walker, and granted her common name may preclude establishing a profile or bio, although wonder if there is some element of the sampler that might lead us to this specific Susannah. Happily, concerning the Retors du Nord floss, there is a source here in the US for the colors to be purchased individually …brooklynhaberdashery.com … Brooklyn Haberdashery operates out of New York. They also have sets of 12 in vintage, modern, essential and pastel tones, as well as that grand box of 96 housing the complete collection. An Etsy seller from Nantucket, Massachusetts-CL Gifts-offers the boxes of 12, although in very limited supply. I ordered the vintage variety to sample the threads for projects such as pincushions. Above and beyond, would there be two blues you could recommend from Retors du Nord that are suitable conversions for the DMC with your 2021 SAL? Thanks again!

Thank you so much Lori! The Retors du Nord link is wonderful, I just checked that shop and it looks fantastic! Sajou Retors du Nord 2834 and 2009 are just really gorgeous together and would work really well. They're not 'replacements' but they are just perfect for the SAL I think. Going through my collection I feel I should place an order again to do a piece only in Retors du Nord! :D

@@ModernFolkEmbroidery How exciting to embark on this 2021 journey that now includes Retors du Nord! Thanks tremendously, Jacob, for suggesting Storm (2834) and Mist (2009). Indeed, there will be a ‘storm,’ more like a whirlwind …of kindness …as you intended when naming this SAL, “The Fruits of Plenty.” Some slight pause, Brooklyn Haberdashery didn’t have ‘plenty’ of those colors. Was only able to acquire three cards of each. Nevertheless, it offers a start for January, and staying the course a short while with 40 ct. linen, although the thrill of the chase is already on for the rest of the threads 😊

@@lorisantamaura7516 Oh no what a pity! I do hope they'll get more stock soon though. And you'll be stitching with one over 2 on 40ct so it should last you for some time I'm sure! :) Haha - didn't know about those names, that is quite funny!

I was very fortunate to go on a tour with Dawn Lewis in 2003 and we visited the V&A museum. The needlework/textile collection was still there, many in those large slide out panels that you could take to a table and photograph and look more closely at. There were drawers and drawers and drawers full of samplers, and other types of needlework. A room off to the side with all kinds of lace pieces, it was such a wonderful experience. I thought that it was moved out of the V&A as they were doing remodeling or something like that. I thought at one time, it was going to be moved back - but I haven't followed all that for years and don't know if it ever happened or if other plans were made for a permanent location. I was sad when I heard you had to make an appointment and specify what you wanted to see - just walking around the rooms was heavenly. Thank you for another fun and informative video.
@ModernFolkEmbroidery
@ModernFolkEmbroidery 3 года назад
Thank you Deborah - yes you are right, that is how it was! I discovered the collection just before it closed so I did see it but sadly, at the time, I wasn't too much down the stitching rabbit hole and didn't take photographs or proper research. The appointment thing already limits my interest as I would feel like I was imposing. They did mention a while back that it was going to open again but I don't think it will be in the V&A itself but in a different building or something. It's currently housed at Blythe House for appointment only.

My first episode and I thoroughly enjoyed it. Popping back to watch number 1. So glad you mentioned living in Yorkshire. I could hear the North in your accent, but couldn’t work out East or West. Thank you. I’m a plant dyer too. I enjoy it a lot, but as you say, it’s hard work.
@ModernFolkEmbroidery
@ModernFolkEmbroidery 3 года назад
Thank you so much! It was North Yorkshire, city of York - and working for 15 years in shops and speaking a lot with local folks really has made a mess of my already weird accent! :P. I've already been looking at Dutch plant dye shops - was using naturalcolours in the UK which was wonderful, but would love to find something properly local here. Zeeland (about 40 minutes by train from here) was an area that was known for its madder growth and got very rich producing it, until that all collapsed in the later 19th century. Would love to grow some madder myself... :D. Do you grow your own?
@hazeluzzell
@hazeluzzell 3 года назад
@@ModernFolkEmbroidery Yes, I’ve grown my own madder, it isn’t difficult. I live on the coast between Liverpool and Preston, so I’m sure you won’t have a problem. I’ve grown my own woad successfully too, although that produces more blue with more sunshine. If you get the chance, go down to Toulouse, there is a woad farm there that welcomes visitors. (Check first, I visited about 6 years ago.
@ModernFolkEmbroidery
@ModernFolkEmbroidery 3 года назад
@@hazeluzzell Oh that's super exciting! I think I might get some plants... it'd be such fun to be able to grow that and then dye with it. I'll need to be patient though as it takes 3 years for the roots to properly produce the lovely reds needed - but I can wait! :D

Excellent video. I'm very excited to stitch the 2021 SAL. You are the only other person I know of that likes DMC 3777 red which is considered a very dark terra cotta. I use it in conjunction with a green from the 500 range.

Oh my! Your sewing box over your right shoulder is just like mine. I bought many years ago for my mom here in the US. Love, love your deer and field of stars! I’ll be waiting to see how you did the hem stitch. How do you frame your pieces with such a narrow hem? I’m so use to 3 inches on each side, then lace the piece over a matt to frame.
@ModernFolkEmbroidery
@ModernFolkEmbroidery 3 года назад
Thank you! That sewing box is lovely indeed, it was a car-boot find (like most of the stuff I have! ). I'll be showing in a future video my hem stitch technique, and how I think it displays nicely!

I was just introduced to your Flosstube this past weekend. Your work is simply breathtaking! What gorgeous patterns you have created, and your care and precision are apparent in all you have shared. May I ask what languages you speak?
@ModernFolkEmbroidery
@ModernFolkEmbroidery 3 года назад
Thank you so much! There's a couple: I grew up in the North of the Netherlands with Frisian being my mother tongue (a minority language spoken in a small part of the Netherlands, and the only sister language of English). Then of course I speak Dutch too. I was taught English in school, and I should be fluent in German after six years but it is *very* rusty. I can read a bit of Swedish / Norwegian / Danish but speaking those is too tricky for me. I studied Japanese for nearly two years at a course at York University but sadly that has mostly vanished and I only catch the occasional word now :P.

I loved all the projects you showed, especially the Reindeer and Stars. I have ordered it from your site and will be stitching it with DMC 3777 (my favorite DMC red also) on ecru cloth. While I was at your site I signed up for the 2021 SAL. The two-tone blue is striking, although I think it would be lovely stitched in two greens as well. What color fabric is the blue version stitched on? Thank you, Jacob, for an enjoyable Flosstube and beautiful designs.

Thank you so much Nan! So the images on the website are mainly digital interpretations, but I think Antique Ivory by Zweigart or Platinum (also Zweigart) are pretty close. I'm tea dyeing my own fabric, and I'll be sharing a tutorial soon-ish (probably in the new year though!).

I think all of us in the cross stitch community thank you for your beautiful contribution to this art. I also find the history behind some of the samplers fascinating and it adds to the appreciation of the lovely designs. It really is quite funny though that I'm sitting here struggling with medium size samplers whereas these children seem to have accomplished so much more. Oh that is a question I have...do you happen to know if, for instance, with the Bristol samplers being taught; did they have a chart or pattern the followed or shown different popular motifs? Thank heavens that we have the gift of charts to follow! Well I really enjoy your videos and appreciate the time you take to produce them....till next time Gelukkig nieuwjarr! The very best in 2021. Warm Regards...

Hi Sarah! Thank you so much. I think I'm quite blessed with my eye-sight, but seeing some other stitches work on 56 count over one... and those Bristol samplers - it's really fantastic how fine the girls' work was! I've added your question to the list as well, and I hope to get round to that in an upcoming video! All the best wishes for 2021!

Thank you so much Yamir - you're a serious stitching legend. I cannot believe how beautiful and fine your stitching is. The Briston one you're working on at the moment is just insane - I was joking in my video about stitching over 1 on 56 (is that the Zweigart "Kingston" linen you're using?) but I'm actually tempted to try it. What floss / needles are you using for that?
@almondmnmsstudio
@almondmnmsstudio 3 года назад
@@ModernFolkEmbroidery awww thank you! I just love stitching tiny things :-), I laughed when you showed your 1 over 1 lol I actually rewind and paused the video to appreciated it longer. The Bristol is on a 56 count Zweigart Kingston, I will always enable anyone to try it lol, and if you hate it at least you know and if anything you can use it over 2 instead of over 1. Currently I am using the Au Ver Soie Surfine number 2384 for it , I don’t mind it at all but moving forward I will mostly use my own floss that I have started to dye (shhhhh coming soon 🤫) oh and the needles I am using for the 56 1x1 are John James Embroidery Needles size 12 the pack is yellow white and black and the to left corner it says ( 4 needles JJ10712B), they are sharp but this does not bother me since I stitch in hand and I am used to beading with them as well. If worse comes to worse you can always use Bohin 28 count as I am using those for the Zimmerman Coverlet and that one is also 1x1 but on 40 count
@ModernFolkEmbroidery
@ModernFolkEmbroidery 3 года назад
@@almondmnmsstudio I'll need to try those - thank you so much for the tips! I love sharp needles for very fine linen - blunts just poke huge holes! :D. I've got some needles in my stash (read: a nightmarish unorganised box with some antique and rusty things, some new and useable ones, and stuff that I do not know the use for). I'm sure there's something I can use! I'm also thinking of just using the very fine cotton sewing machine thread for the fine project like I'm doing on my Bristol one - updates soon on how I succeed or fail ;)

I stitched a sampler this year from 1658. I couldn't leave out my own creativity so I chose my own colors and used black aida. I then started to sketch my own 2020 sampler to pair with the first piece. Same size and colors on black aida. This is my first time designing. I'm using pencil and paper. I'm finding your videos to be a great inspiration to keep stitching down this rabbit hole. My experience and skill is nowhere near yours but the passion for this is the same. Thank you so much. 🖤
