I have had my 2022 MG ZS EV LR Trophy for 3 weeks and really love it. The range is pretty accurate, i did 118 miles on the motorway at 70 mph with the air conditioning on full (34 c temp) and used 41% battery. Very little re gen on the motorway. Total of 638 miles and charged it twice myself. The only issue i have found is that it can be difficult to disconnect the charger cable, as it remains locked even when the charging has stopped and you press the unlock icon on the screen, but i am sure i will get more proficient at that as i use it more. Great review by the way.
This has been a great review, Dave. You are right, I love my mk1, as you know. I think I’d agree with you about the battery size. I am more than happy with the rage of my car. Getting to Wales from Boston was a breeze. The 200 mile range of the new 51k/Wh version should be more than enough for most people. Folk always think they need more miles than they do. One thing I have found is that MG are quite conservative when it comes to their published top speed and charging speed. On a 350Kw charger I’ve seen 82Kw charging speed when MG officially claim just 50Kw with 72Kw mentioned in the handbook. As a car for disabled drivers, like myself, it offers much better space for wheelchairs and entry and exit is great. I think you’ve nailed the review. It’s a well balanced level of driving, equipment and long distance comfort.
I am gonna miss the space under the centre console 😢 I always had a £1 coin there for trolleys that was out of my wife's sight... meaning it was there when I needed it it. Trips to ASDA will be so much more stressful now 😫 Aaaanyway, now just a short 6-9 month wait until I pick up my Mk2. Love the MG as our daily driver 😎 P.S. great review thanks!
Thank you so much for the comment. I am more than confident that you can find another place to hide your pound coin from your wife and your trolley needs are always satisfied.
I was going to trade in my Nissan Leak 40 kWh next year in 2223 for this model, but now no sun roof so will start looking around again. The rest of the car I like as a man who has had 6 Nissan Qashqui’s you can see why I like the design of the MG, I did over 100,000 miles in my Qashqui I just wish Nissan offered it as a EV. Thank you so much for your comments Bob. I wouldn’t be too hasty jumping straight back to Nissan for the Qashqai. Have a chat with your local MG dealer in regards to the trophy connect. I personally think this is a temporary measure to deal with the current influx of orders they have for the ZS.
Ordered my trophy Connect in middle of February still waiting with no delivery date yet, Seems to be a problem with most new vehicles, I’ve enjoyed your great review.
Have ordered a LRTrophy connect in June but can get no info from anyone when it will be available. Will let you know when I hear anything. Late September was only info I could get but heard on some platforms that October to December more likely. ???
@@maureenandjohnwhite6228 Mine was ordered exactly 6 months ago still waiting for news, but my dealer sends me an email just to keep in touch, nobody mentioned a long wait when I ordered it.
Ordered my Trophy Long Range in March ‘22 & still waiting… Don’t think I’ll see it until December at the earliest. There are a lot of external issues affecting this delay, but MG aren’t covering themselves in glory with zero information to customers & customers are becoming frustrated and cancelling their orders, but rather than giving them to customers who are waiting for their cars, some dealers are selling the cancelled cars to new customers for more profit & allowing them to queue jump… Not good 🙄😩🤦🏻♂️
Yeah. We took a cancelled order and que jumped. Only went to MG in June, picking our car up on the 15th August... Apparently it was originally ordered in January.
@@nathancaunt7032 See, this isn’t right IMHO… I’m sure there are loads of others in the queue waiting that spec/colour… One of the most frustrating things about MG is the queue-jumping that’s going on 😩🤦🏻♂️
Great review, I would add that MG have dropped the panoramic roof for the MG ZS EV for those ordered from July onwards unfortunately, cost saving and build delay impacting this decision I believe, there is no options to add as an extra either.
Great review and this is a silly little question but can fold the mirrors in whilst the car is running, haven’t seen any review that shows this but it’s something I do regularly in Devon lanes and also when entering my garage! Thanks
You can, I think the same switch that you alter the mirror angle also folds the mirrors, I was curious about this also as live rurally and lanes mean this is needed for drivers with no spatial awareness flying towards you lol
MG have done a decent job but I feel they haven’t quite nailed it for the price increase. Still no extension from the steering wheel, not particularly efficient, lack of headroom in the back, no regen in cruise control. There’s about a £5000 differential between this and the new Kia NiroEV spec for spec. However you can get into a base trim NiroEV (2) for about the same price as the top spec ZSEV - I’d suggest you’d be better off. One pedal driving, a smaller battery but the identical or better range so much more efficient, better infotainment, better interior quality, more room especially in the back, a small frunk, regen on cruise control, optional heat pump (add £1K but worth it IMO), 11kW onboard charging and fully adjustable steering wheel. Step up to the mid spec Kia (about 3K more) and you get pretty much everything you get on the top spec MG and extras. Is anybody comparing these 2 vehicles?
I’ve got one of these coming “soon”, not a fan of the new grille, but to know we can get an add on is really cool. Where did you see that though as I can’t find itz
In Australia is listed as 'Front Grille Garnish' & so you could check with your dealer. I though it a bit pricey & this one also has an awful red border around the whole thing. Probably more straightforward to have it wrapped, just like the original promotions from some dealerships.
Your mention of the lane control making the steering wheel move, can you not turn it off on narrow roads, like the one you were driving on a lot of the time? Thanks Noel
Hi there Noel. Yes you can turn the system off so you are in control. The system is more suited to the motorway than narrow b-roads. Just the joys of my local roads.
@@AutoBears H Bears. Many thanks for the reply, I looked myself and found the pressing the button on the left hand stalk twice turned it off. Cheers Noel
I tested the old one, pedal to the metal from zero, as you do, massive torque steer. Does this have it too? I tested the first Ioniq on the same day, way better to drive and sit in.
It's not an official thing, believe a dealer here in the UK offered it as part of a deal, think they called it the black edition, came with privacy tinting on the windows and black vinyl wrap on the roof and grill.

Thank you so much for your comment Steve. Yes the MG 4 an MG5 do look really stylish. Don’t forget, MG are limited to what they can do with the current generation ZS. Just imagine how it will look in a couple of years time with an all new version available!
Thank you so much for your comment. That is hugely impressive and shows what the MG can do in city conditions driving at relatively lower speeds compared to highways. I would expect you to lose some range in the winter time, but I have heard from owners who have still received an impressive miles per kilowatt hour during the winter months.
On the negative side: A recent Australian Strategic Policy Institute report indicates that the Chinese government “has facilitated the mass transfer of Uyghur and other ethnic minority citizens from the far west of Xinjiang,” to work in factories across the country. '“Under conditions that strongly suggest forced labor, Uyghurs are working in factories that are in the supply chains of at least 82 well-known global brands in the technology, clothing and automotive sectors." Including MG
While CHINA currently views Australia as an enemy, there is no way I would purchase a vehicle from China. With China talking war, it seems risky to buy from them at best. However, people go for cheapest option so China it is. Good luck with that.
Great review Dave thanks. I’ve just picked mine up yesterday but struggling to open passenger side front door when we want to get out. What are we doing wrong?
Took one for a test drive recently. It’s OK, although when you put your foot down the front end shimmies from side to side in an alarming fashion. It’s quiet too. BUT when you really start to look at in detail you realise the MG has quality issues. For one thing the quality of the interior is truly rubbish. It’s all very well having lots of features for less money, but you have to feel comfortable in a car you’re going to spend any time in and you won’t with this. The seats are cheap, the centre console bashes your arm, the trim around the doors looks like black masking tape, the seatbelts just go into bare metal on the floor, and the park assist camera gives such a weird fish eye view as to be almost useless. I was nearly tempted in a ‘value for money’ sort of way, but then I went and sat in a Cupra Born in the showroom next door and the quality and feel was simply in another universe, and not for a huge amount more. We were also told that to cut costs further the sliding sunroof option for the MG would be discontinued, which is a shame as this for many people might make up for the other shortfalls. I would also say, and this is just my personal opinion, that the MG is one of the most bland looking of EVs on the market. I think I’m going to save the extra and go for something a little more polished.
