LIKE if an electric estate is appealing & SHARE if you think EVs should be more affordable The MG5 is not only the first estate to join the electric car market, but it's also very competitively priced. Designed and made in China, this 5 door electric estate is solid, stable and well built. The interior may be a little dated, and it might not be the most exciting EV, but its impressive range, performance, driving ease and affordable cost show that MG are pitching this to sell to the masses. Being an estate, it is very spacious and, surprisingly, if you floor it, it will go like the clappers. It has some peculiar quirks but all of these can be overlooked when you consider what you are getting for the price. *Timestamps: 0:00 Intro 1:45 Challenge to legacy automotive industry 2:15 Not an SUV! 2:39 Cheaper & cheaper 3:36 Ease of driving 4:00 Reliable range 5:27 Easy charging 6:17 Got some grunt 6:51 Get over pre-conceptions 7:36 Realistic pricing 8:36 Solid, stable, normal car 8:51 Value for money 10:15 A look inside 11:10 Fiddley screen 11:52 A few quirks 12:21 Impressive boot 13:29 Subscribe, support, join

@Ian G Yeah, NA needs long ranges as you tend to drive further than we do in the UK/EU. This would be fine for me as a daily even with my 130mile round trip. Its why Tesla got it right with their supercharger network and long range cars, they just need to make a cheaper EV. Not everyone wants an iPod on wheels that can drive itself, most just want a car that goes from A to B and is an EV.
@petebarnesTaiChi

This standard run of the mill car is just what the EV revolution needs. I love Tesla cars but for the revolution to really take off it needs car manufacturers producing run of the mill cars that are cheap, practical and yet still have all the advantages of an EV over ICE.

not a charging network then?
@errcoche
@errcoche 3 года назад
@@shaungilmartin1505 Not really Shaun. When you are actually filling up nightly at home the charging network becomes less of an issue. It depends on your driving habits but I haven't needed to go near a charging station in a few weeks of owning an electric and there's a really question about the economic viability of charging stations for me. Petrol needs to be transported on the road, stored in tanks and metered out through special pumps with a lot of safety measures given you are storing an explosive, highly toxic liquid. Fast chargers require a large economic outlay in order to get the amount of current to a location ( way beyond anything normal ) with car owners only occasionally needing your service. I have a "fueling station" at home and I am not sure of the economics of petrol stations switching to EV recharging stations. It's much more likely to make sense as an ancillary service in places where people are stopping for other reasons and on major arteries. I would see a lot more likelihood of councils putting regular charging stations on streets that already have standard voltage cabling in the ground and we do see supermarkets putting in charging. I live in the US and we are behind on this but they have put in DC Fast Charging in my local Walmart. There is a lot of expensive plant there, a very large transformer, and I could see myself going there the night before a planned long trip to take my battery up to 85% and top up at the house overnight. I just learned that the recommendation is to not recharge to 100% nightly so I will typically only have 50 to 150 miles range ( 238 mile Chevy Bolt ) in the batteries. I think the requirement to outfit any new housing with charging point needs to be in the code - be that apartments or actual houses. In 10 years, everything sold will he plugin hybrid or pure EV.

Those things start to matter, digital dash , nice gearshifter and a decent charging rate , hoping for 100DC ). I've had the MG ZS EV for 6 months - does what it says on the tin and we're delighted with it. The MG5 has auto climate control which is missing on the ZS. But the ZS has adaptive cruise control which I believe the MG5 doesn't have. Generally I think the MG5 will do very well in the UK, especially with taxi drivers. The obsession with SUVs is often down to liking the higher driving position, but outside of that the MG5 would make a great family car and great for dog owners, of whom there are a lot in the UK!

I'm sure it'll find buyers but there's so much more to an estate car (and the need for one) than just "a big boot". There's quite a chunky load lip there, no false floor and seats that don't actually fold flat. Therefore, aside from being bigger perhaps, it is no more flexible than any other electric car. Arguably the ID3, Peugeot e2008 are actually more flexible and practical because they make it easier for people to slide big loads in. No ICE estate car currently on sale has such a basic load area, so this is quite a disappointing area for the MG. Otherwise, it's good that MG have noticed a gap for estate cars which everyone else seems to be falling asleep on. Having said that, the Enyaq and ID4 will give this a run for its money when it comes to practicality, and in the Enyaq's case, maybe even price. Exciting times.

Design inside and out reminds me of older generation VW Passat. Physical switches for heating controls is always a winner. The poor media interface can probably be improved by plugging in your apple/android phone and using carplay/AA. Nice to finally see an EV estate rather than yet another SUV.

I would not buy a Chinese car but I like it. Seems like a legit car. I dont think its too much of a challenge to the major Legacy automakers. Still a lot of people are traditional when buying cars, so the Chinese really need offer competetive prices to appeal as thats the only asset they are ahead of the others.

Something wrong with the sounds on this video. Speech is low volume and my subwoofer is getting run for the money and windows shaking, still hard to hear the speech.

All li-on batteries arent made in china. I would imagine 40% from china, 40% from japan and rest split across multiple countries.

Robert, this is the second car review in a row in which you have gotten the efficiency figure conversions wrong. One mile equals 1.609344 km. So to convert Wh/mi to Wh/km you *divide* Wh/mi by 1.609344 km/mi (You include the units as a check) so in this case that is 275/1.609344 = 170.9 Wh/km. Checking with the units (Wh/mi)/(km/mi)=Wh/km. To get kWh/100 km simply divide Wh/km by 10 (i.e. divide Wh by 1000 to get kWh and multiple km by 100 to get 100 km - i.e 100/1000 = 1/10) which, in this case gives 17.1 kWh/100 km. If this car used 443 Wh/km it would be using 44.3 kWh/100 km and it would not get very far...

Reverse parking is the safer method of parking so a front mounted charge point isn't ideal.

Honestly think EV's need to have a charge socket at each end.

An MG without the dash covering coming unglued on the SHOWROOM floor? This is China's greatest contribution to the Marqué. Thanks Mister "L" - another enjoyable AND informative show. My only wish would be for GM to become the official IMPORTER of MGs into "America".

Finally a station wagon! I love station wagons, I love sedans, I really don't care for SUVs (I can see the appeal but they are not for me at all).

We were disappointed when we lost the classic MG brand, but who’d have known we would be getting this back in return? The best thing that could’ve happened to it. Price wise, it’s one of the very, very few EV reviews that doesn’t make you plant your face into the palm of your hand. Just right...and it will, only get cheaper. Also, they haven’t thrown several tons of precious battery cells at it (as if they were penny chews), in order to get a half decent range. It’s ‘Tesla less is more’. It looks good. Seems as though you can charge it without doing your back in. And spacious. Looks like you can just lob your kids, dogs, surf boards, Granny, and everything in this thing. We wouldn’t have been able to afford the Tesla in the old days of family camping, touring, and bloody miserable standing around in the rain at kids’ football matches (with a filthy old ‘oiler’ sat steamed up in the car park). This would have been the ticket. Looks like good times are ahead after all.

Love that there's an electric estate and I love the price. The range isn't even that bad. I'm sure it's built well and works fine, but what concerns me about it being from China and being so cheap is the ethics behind the materials. Also, I bloody love a heated steering wheel!

Sam Pyne. I think you'll find all car companies use a large number of parts from China.

@@curmudgeon1933 you're definitely right, but the specific bit that concerns me is the battery material. As an example, I think Polestar has made a point of saying their lithium and cobalt etc is ethically sourced.

I suggest that reviewers and potential buyers should research RU-vid and other sources about the first MG EV. Search "rust, corrosion, faults, warranty, MG communication".
