It was never my expectation as Student Council President of Marc Garneau CI to have to coordinate a response with the School Administration about a global pandemic. Here was my address to students about precautions they must take regarding the COVID-19 virus.

Good morning Garneau,
Yesterday afternoon, the Government of Ontario and the Ministry of Education declared that all public schools in Ontario will be closed for two weeks after the March Break between March 14th to April 5th. This move was made by the Provincial government based on the consultation from top medical professionals.
This is not a time to celebrate, but to stay safe and to keep you and your families healthy during this Covid-19 Crisis. Do not spend these three weeks acting unwisely and accelerating the virus’s spread. This is not the time to be shopping at a mall, going out to see the movies, or congregating in large, public indoor spaces.
This is especially important for students who live in the Thorncliffe Park and Flemington Park community. Both these areas have high population densities, and are extremely susceptible to the virus, once brought into the community.
Yes, it is true that most of us will barely feel any long-term effects of the Covid-19 virus, however, the elderly population in Canada, will. When making any judgements on whether or not to go out, take into consideration not only the seniors within your life, but the lives of people who take care of our most fragile population.
The Student Council will suspend all events for the remainder of this school year until further notice. This includes our upcoming Semi-Formal on April 9th, Fun Fair and International Street in mid-April, and Prom at the end of the school year. Maintaining the safety of Marc Garneau students, and limiting the spread of the Covid-19 virus, is our number one priority.
Understandably, this is a very troubling time for all Garneau students. Many aspects of our lives will change. We will bring all of your questions to the school administration and get them answered.
It is now our duty as Canadians and Marc Garneau students to come together during these trying times, to look out for one another, and to do our part to limit the spread of the Covid-19 virus. Together, we can come out of this stronger as a student body, as a school, and as a community.
