La Las He’s also literally the phantom pain of the entire series. He put Zero in a coma. Repercussions felt in the future but not seen or spoken about.
This while tape is mysterious... When someone holds a grudge on me i dont invite him to my place, or did zero? He even mentioned, in the end! How he had find this place.
Maybe he's making noise so the agents can find him? I remember that no one there knew what they were protecting or keeping, they probably only knew that a little girl (Paz) goes there from time to time.
When Zero says "Jack" at the end, I can only imagine him regretting everything he ever did against Snake. This is why he goes on to protect him from Skull Face with everything he's got.
Funny how Skull Face ruined Zero by giving him a fake pin that was near identical to the original memento he sought. In turn Zero indirectly ruined Skull Face by setting up a memetic copy of Big Boss to help deal with the threat his former XO posed. Near identical to the original, apart from a missing limb and some added shrapnel.
Indeed. It shows that even “he who controls information” can be fooled, fooled by form over substance. Skull Face wanted to give him a taste of his own medicine.
Holy Shit! The voice acting and dialogue exchange in the tapes are absolutely God-tier! Metal gear has always consistently had great voice acting but in Phantom Pain it's really exceptionally!
I like this better than the other videos where the cassette is played while in the helicopter. The lack of rotor noises from the heli lets you hear the fine details more clearly (the pin opening, the tea being poured, etc), not to mention the iDroid is not interrupting the dialogue to tell me that its going to be cloudy lol. Well done sir, standards indeed!
+Caedarva yeah I felt the same way, I had to do some tricks to get this recorded and everything, but I couldnt find any raw rips of the tapes and I wanted the raw recordings
The basic workflow is: -put all intel people into another group, eg medical bay, since they get released automatically later. this prevents lots of onscreen notices and sounds - go to a place thats dark and quiet to play the tape, I chose some caves - make sure all soldiers in the areas are absolutely cleaned out - now basically play the tape and record. because something always goes wrong, and weather warnings cannot be stopped, you usually have to do 2 or 3 recordings and cut it together. you may wanna position the camera so that snake disappears. rest is video effects to adjust the levels and make only white show up, which are the subtitles I may do skull face and code talker, but I dont think there are many more that warrant this treatment
6:07 I will always love the level of detail of this recording. The way we hear Zero reclining forward on his chair at that moment makes us realize that he was actually concerned and put out of place about what Skull face just said... it sums emphasis on the turn the conversation took suddenly
I think it was a little earlier than that Iago. Like at the beginning Skully has a sycophantic kiss-ass tone but when Zero turns his plan down skully's tone changed to angrily saying his face can't be brought back.
When Zero mentioned "context" all I could think of was GW AI Colonel and Rose in MGS2 when they were talking about "creating context" for the future. Filtering out information and deciding what will be thrown away and what will be kept. Holy crap. O.o
That's why Zero mentions "Electronic network". He's referring to the Patriots AI that will emerge later on. Kaz also references this at the end of PW when he defines Cipher as a world governed by digital intelligence.
@@narek323 Paz also talks about how "Ciphers going to CONTROL guns" at the end of PW referencing SOP. Zero had these ideas and plans in the works LONG LONG before we see them come to fruition in 2 and 4. the AI spiraled out of control though and created the War Economy which wasn't part of his plans tho.
this isnt a scene, its just dialogue, it would of been badass to have those 40 minute scenes but non hardcore metal gear fans fucked it up for all of us.
ok, so basically, if Skull Face would've have never fucked up the Major and left him like a veggie, the AIs from MGS2 and 4 would've never been derailed from their original task and turned into War addicts? huh, interesting. so Zero wasnt THAT evil when you think about it. he still was robbing the whole humanity of their free will, though.
If Snake had said the code phrase to Ocelot in MGS3, he never would have lost his eye, Volgin would have been killed for good, Eva would have been found out, and the Boss probably would have survived. "Who are the patriots" and he just never says it to Ocelot.
Spark of the beginning is what he is. Evil? Fuck no. Cause and main player for shit storm? Unfortunately yes. Which makes story even greater, for even men with greatest intentions can fall to their own lies when they accidentally make them their own reality.
@The Law Maybe everything once did build up to a MGS6, a logical explanation is that Zero actually uploaded himself to the AIs as soon as the supertech became possible; Naked unplugging his oxygen turned him loose onto even more networks.
I guess that works when you think about it. These tapes allow you to imagine the things happening in it. Sometimes, picturing how these events are going down is better than seeing it. Plus, this allows the tape to be more important in the story of MGSV
@@journey95far49 That's bollocks, mate. What you're talking about is exposition, not story. Nothing is gained by seeing characters explain everything in dense, overlong detail.
@@vicwaters87 I wouldn't say these tapes are purely exposition as they flesh out important series plot points that were left dangling after the game's final cutscene. To say "nothing is gained by seeing characters explain everything in dense, overlong detail" is lame rationalization in defense of what's clearly a rushed and unfinished product. Not to mention, that statement sounds very ironic coming from someone who I'm assuming is a Metal Gear fan. Cutscenes in the previous entries were known for being long-winded but they added a groundbreaking cinematic quality that the series became acclaimed for. They packed everything you needed to know within the actual campaign, not unlockable post-game collectibles. Generally speaking it's by far more engaging if you've got compelling visuals to complement the dialogue and voice actors as opposed to just listening. I don't have an issue with games using these types of audio logs to flesh out the narrative. BioShock is an example of it being done right because they give you little bits and pieces of information at a time. In Phantom Pain, instead of 40 minute long Kojima-directed cutscenes that are uniquely shot and edited.... we get several 10 minute long cassette recordings after finishing the game that clumsily tie up the (many) loose ends. It's a half-assed effort on their part, just like the game in general after you beat Act 1.
I wouldn't necessarily call them psychopaths. They are merely misguided. They don't enjoy harming others for the sake of it. They believe that they are doing the right thing that will benefit the world, but they're willing to achieve anything to reach that goal, even if it's unethical.
Skull Face - I just sent you a package Zero, i hope you like it. Zero - Thank you XOF commander. Zero - Ouch! This hurt! Oh no.. i'm infected.. how did you find me? Paz? Skull Face - I just sent you a package.... -________-
+AutomaticSnake could also be that Zero trusted that everything sent to him is checked before given to him, but since the pin had parasites, Zero realized Skull Face must have sent some to give the pin - without it being checked. Make any sense? :)
Zero all like “how did you find me”? Well technically the pin was sent as a gift to YOU so of course YOU would know that Skull face could find your location
Yea he definitely let his guard down and sucked for him thinking this was just some regular gift Paz was the only one that knew his whereabouts so I guess that's what made me not take action.
8:20 Now that I'm hearing these tapes again it sounds like at some point Skullface actually met The Boss and was inspired by her in his own way: "The Boss said the same thing... Only I understood what she meant". What a waste of a perfectly good villain. Scenes like these should've been part of the main campaign and not be unlocked as extra tapes post-ending. The Phantom Pain lives up to its title after four years.
Skullface was always behind snake as his shadow, always making sure snake didnt do anything wrong in both the virtuous mission and operation snake eater, so he knows pretty much all of the boss' aspirations, and in my opinion, better than zero did.
He stated that it was not, but Kojima caught a lot of flack for leaving the game “unfinished”. But after a few years now, I’m pretty convinced it was all intentional. It really drives home the over-arching theme of the game and it’s very namesake. I appreciate this game more today than 2015 when it came out.
Man for a guy in a secret room on a secret floor of a windowless apartment with every tenant a cipher agent, they sure needed better people. Alarm was ringing for almost 3 minutes until somebody came. (Presumably longer if the audio fading out and back indicates passage of time.)
you gotta remember his security had to be carefully handpicked. Agents could span from chefs, customers, waitresses, hosts, homeless people, janitors. Anyone who’s awaiting the order to reach out to zero sticks to their “duty” until he calls for them. Sometimes it’ll take more than a few minutes
everyone in this comments section ignoring the insane lengths skullface would have had to go to make an exactly perfect replica of the pin badge, exclusively to fuck with Zero after he started succumbing to the effects of the parasite. HE EVEN HAD SOMEONE RUB THEIR FINGER ON THE INSCRIPTION UNTIL IT LOOKED JUST RIGHT
@@teslashark Skullface says the pin he gave to Zero is a fake, and they he is holding the real pin, there is a little audio sound effect that implies Skullface was holding the Pin.
Both great voice actors. Zero seems so jaded but deep down he's still the same softie we remember (albeit having done unforgivable mistakes) and Skullface is just plain scary. Going from sycophantic to guiding Zero to prick himself, to taunting and talking over Zero. Skullface was not just happy with causing physical pain and just had to add that last jab of denying Zero of his little trinket. One's final moments reveals one's true nature and the last thing Zero thought about was his regret for his rivalry with Big Boss and for what's to come. Skullface puts even Ocelot to shame...
Interesting that Skull Face is still on somewhat friendly terms with Zero despite this phone call taking place after MSF's downfall. Zero claims to be Big Boss' friend, but still keeps Skull Face around. Granted, Skull Face was exiled to Africa, but you'd think Zero would want to avenge Snake in some way.
It’s not unlikely Zero still saw some small use for him while he was stuck in Africa. It’s also likely that Zero still believed he could still keep Skull Face under control, which is presumably why Zero was as receptive to the call in the first place.
See Zero's biggest mistake was not seeing the red flag that was he "received" the pin from Skull Face. To understand you have to remember that Zero went unbelievable lengths to stay out of the public eye by any means necessary meaning that virtually no one knew where to find him unless he wanted to be found. So, when he was delivered a gift from his XO who had no way to find him, he should've put together that he was in danger. And Zero only realized this after he fell for Skull Faces trap.
+Ahmed Mehdi In the beginning I thought the pin badge was of the Sorrow, due to timing and location, this isnt true. Which has nothing to do with the line we are talking about here though. "You are no different...Just like HIM. None of you understand the world she saw" - Zero is talking about Big Boss, as he also was puzzled by the Boss throughout Peace Walker too, Strangelove as well. Zero claims to understand her better. Which is a big retcon from MGS3 of course, but... ye.
How is Zero claiming to understand her better a retcon? It's not. Zero always canonically shared time with The Boss in WW2. He did however spend nowhere the time with her Big Boss did which just shows his arrogance in claiming he knows her will better than him - to be fair he's not entirely wrong, Big Boss didn't get her will either and only realised it in 2014
That doesn't mean the perspective from MGSV is a retcon. He wasn't incredibly familiar with the Boss in MGS3, sure, but I think the Boss' speech at the end of 3 is meant to have made him incredibly respectful of her vision; it certainly seems to have affected all involved massively. Given Big Boss learns that the Boss' defection and death was concocted by Hot Coldman, I have to imagine Zero quickly cast aside any possible contempt he may have had for her when learning the same. Skull Face also suggests that Cipher is revenge against America for her death... So it also seems especially likely that Zero concocted Peace Walker's employment of Paz and Zadornov not only to manipulate Big Boss, but to wipe out Coldman, too.
Sean "PlayStationFan" Goldtrade its the theme of tpp. Revenge is a good motivation untill you exact it, then you'll feel lost and unsatisfied. just like miller after skull face died. He said the pain keeps on going, and he began suspecting diamond dogs members of duplicity, etc etc. but the storu got cut short so the situation resolves prematurely
No, that's Big Boss as per the end of Metal Gear 2. He quite openly tells Snake about how he wants to perpetuate the cycle of war and wants to use child soldiers to do it.
I like how Zero had all the technology in the world, could create super human cyborg ninjas, an impenetrable fortress that serves as the U.S military network, how he could create nano machines and make dudes go inmortal and even so far as to imbue spirits of dead people into someone else like MGS4 with screaming mantis. YET he could not save himself from some pathetic parasite? lmao... Even so Zero is literally the responsible for everything happening after MGS3 and when the Patriot A.I, J.D came into control, basically the world was his.
Its only 1975-1976 years, his power is not so huge at this moment and i think its not so difficult to infect him with parasites. Furthermore he didnt even realise the XOF opportunity to betray him
Parasites are no joke. Even today with how far we've progressed with technology and the medical field, parasites are still a major threat to humans and can lead to severe complications, even death in alot of cases.
I have a much greater appreciation for this title in the series, today. It’s only been 7 years but so many important subjects are being discussed here between Skull Face and Zero. Subjects relevant to even our social and political atmosphere in America. And in hindsight, Kojima did an excellent job tying everything together. Notice Zero mentioned both Genetics (MGS1) and Information Control (MGS2). And it’s all based on his obsession to honor the Boss; her will (MGS3). To add onto that, it’s ironic to simply realize that both of these guys are completely convinced they are the leading authority on what the Boss wanted for the world. But just end up perverting it and becoming control freaks. Meanwhile, Big Boss still doesn’t even fully understand what she wanted. He doesn’t even come to a revelation on the matter until his death knell in MGS4. More than anything, he just loved her and misses her. And I think that last gasp for “Jack” by Zero here, really testifies to who Big Boss was in this whole story: the real legacy of the Boss. The rightful interpreter of her will.
@@davidanspach1624 I’ve been coming back to a lot of these clips in my downtime lately. It also makes me appreciate why Kojima was so dead-set on using motion capture (as well as passing on David Hayter for Keifer Sutherland) for the acting. There’s a gravity to the way the storytelling unfolds in MGS5. Using Revenge as the theme. And then The Phantom Pain title whilst literally leaving the game feeling open-ended. I am now convinced Kojima was not lying when he said the game was completed and not unfinished. Regardless of what happened with Konami. We forget the guy gets off on pulling fast ones.
Big Boss understood what she wanted after the peace walker but he felt betrayed Boss wanted peace a world that would not need soldier, being a soldier Big Boss believed that she betrayed their true calling, and her dream eventually would leave the world without soldier in other words Jack would have no place in it. At least this is way I understood.
@@Jakewd12 venom snake was still forced to operate under big boss, which is why mgsv heavily emphasizes that he becomes a demon. It's not because of who he is, its because of the person he inherited. Big boss forced him to be a terrorist who helped outer heaven be built, despite us seeing him save the world and even stop child soldiers from being recruited, even being against the idea of revenge, while big boss uses revenge as the only thing to power his anger against zero
It’s almost hard to tell wich one is the bad guys is. I used to think Zero was the real villain back in MGS4. And all Zero was want was just trying reconciliation with Big Boss after the Peace Walker incident. Then Skull face step in with his own way to fulfilling The Boss’s Will. And yet I still think Skull Face isn’t a bad guy either. He same as Zero and Big Boss trying to accomplish The Boss’s will
I love the deception some Machiavellian games here out foxing the master, even when skull face says “I have no regrets” and (zero doesn’t interpret the will and can’t tell a memento for a friend from a ringer) and when zero says Skull face would steal it all “she said the same thing except I understand what she meant” skull face isn’t wrong about zero he had completely lost sight and pasted his view over hers skull face was a great villain just too many cuts to this game a lot hidden in tapes
Running a mercenary/private military organisation. Prior to Big Boss waking up, Kaz was already running around keeping their funds going prior to setting up Diamond Dogs.. Which was set up with Zero's help, after what Skull Face did.
For Paz, yeah he kept that secret, I don't remember if he had a reason but yes, But, Big Boss knew about the "Les Enfants Terribles" project, nothing about betraying the boss No context about the third tape, isn't that Zero and Skullface ? Idk can't tell anything about that dude The last one is nothing about betrayal too
😢it's downright insane how zero predicted the future and how skull face interfered with the progress of zeros way slowly but surely depend on the one segment of the economy that the intended system never intended on depended on the first place , the war economy
Several things here. For one, that's the fuckin predecessor to the FOXDIE sound. So we know the beginning of that. Of course of Course, Naomi Hunter, the fuckin Liar. FOXDIE wasn't a Virus... ... it was a parasite. For two, that Pin actually is important historically, because that's the British SAS pin. The Winged Dagger, with the phrase "Who Dares, Wins". Remember that the Boss was the Mother of Special Forces. Which means she had that pin immortalized for what must've been a very dear friend. Seems the Boss got very attached to individuals, a complete contradiction to what she talked about to Snake early in the Virtuous Mission. For three, Zero recites near word per word what the PATRIOT AIs recite. Truely, his remains, a digital gravestone. Not even that, but if we take Strangelove's speech, he seems to have made the AI to the point of attaching the Peace Walker AI to it as well. Though how this was accomplished and what it resulted in remains in a mystery... Perhaps some eggs are better left unhatched.
It's interesting how Skullface understood The Boss' will better than Zero; her will was to leave the world as it is, something that Zero, through Cipher, utterly failed to understand. Skullface might be taking a hands-on approach, but he ultimately seeks for the world to be left alone from the imperialism of English as a lingua franca. Obviously The Boss probably wouldn't approve of his actions, but he understood her far more than Zero did in his quest to unify the world.
This. His predecessor refers to The Philosophers - he stole their money and created an organisation that would replace them and unite the world. This is what The Boss claimed she wanted to do, to unite The Philosophers. The only problem is circ 1964 there are no remnants of the wise men's committee left just warmongering assholes so Zero presumably decided they couldn't be saved and created Cipher to replace them
something I didn't get when they found out the cure for the parasite how come ocelot didn't try to cure zero it implied he was aware of his condition was zero at the point where he was uncurrable
A month late, but this takes place some years before the events of MGSV and some years before the Wolbachia solution came about. Zero said time was running out, so chances are, by the time they found the cure, Zero was too far gone.
So….if zero wasnt the one who attacked msf, and Skullface said he doesn’t hate the big boss, which part of Cypher was it that attacked the base 9 years ago?
Could you please do one for Skull Face and Code Talker? It's perhaps my most favorite of Skull Face's tapes that it irritates me how in the actual game, Skull Face is, well...
8:08 - Well, unfortunately, Zero's not entirely wrong. Both he and Big Boss interpreted the Boss' will incorrectly. Of the three of them, Skull Face knew what she wanted, but had no intention of making it reality.
you mean besides weaponizing information / becoming the (worlds) information dictator, trying to get a super-soldier clone army, sanctioning genetic (and maybe parasitic) killswitches / cleansers? Not saying big boss has a clean sheet but zero sure as heck doesn't either.
Ok maybe that, but the fall of Motherbase was on skull face, not zero. Zero was the one who hid Big Boss away from Skull Face in Cyprus in the first place. After Skull Face infected Zero with the parasite he became brain dead.
XxVoiceofSurvivalxX You do realize Zero caused all of this by even sending Paz to MSF in the first place to threaten, coerce and imprison Snake? Zero has caused all of this from the very beginning. The only reason he kept Snake alive was because of guilt and the fact he still desired for Big Boss to be his ally, an ally he could control like a puppet.
In the end, Skull Face won. Retaliation was propagated until the war economy came to be. And so Big Boss had to unite the world, make it one, by making it retaliate unto him. Make him the enemy. Humanity's need for an enemy to fight, to blame has resulted in a world war: only because some soldiers could not interpret the Boss' idea of peace.
I don't understand... Why did zero ask skull face "how did you find me?". I mean he delivered the fake pin badge to zero (im assuming through proxies)can someone explain pls
Not likely. Zero suggests both he and whoever the recipient of the pin was were working under the Boss in Egypt when the man passed. The Boss killed the Sorrow at the behest of the Philosophers in Tselinoyarsk. But the man's death most likely contributed to the Boss' perspective as per MGS3.
I mean, I'm all for people having fan theories and having fun with it. But they are taking this shit, WAAAAAYYYYYYYY to seriously for their own good. I mean kojima has been doing nothing but Metal Gear for over 20 years now and now finally when he's out from KoNAZI headquaters, he can finally do his own thing, yet people want him to produce MORE of Metal Gear. Jesus Christ, give the guy a break and let him do something new for christ sakes. I know koijima said he's going to be doing video games intill the day he dies, but I'm sure he doesn't want too do Metal Gear intill the day he dies.
Zero was infected Skull face's own version of the vocal cord parasite when he pricked his finger with the pin and would reduce his cognitive function over time
The out of universe explanation is obvious, but in universe... Chances are he had no idea he existed or didn't care enough to do so; Big Boss never meets him face to face after all.
Wow so I thought chapter three or whatever got cut would be Big Boss finally going after Cipher, when in fact he just dies right here holy shit what???? That's really weird. Good to know, but kinda disatisfying. Like we are robbed of our revenge.
I think it's meant to be dissatisfying, but.. Really tying with the themes of the game. Like Skull Face intended to destroy an incredibly prominent means of communication using the parasites, but the real issue is the lack of communication between Big Boss and Zero. If the two had mended their bond when Big Boss woke up? Everything would have been different. But.. Yeah. This basically turns Zero into the pitiful vegetable we see in MGS4, which.. Sure, he did bad things, but I didn't really want revenge, knowing the way he turned out.
Nemesis Zero dies in 2016 after MGS4 the parasite attack degraded his health over several years till he was rendered in a vegetative state up till when big boss shuts off his life support in the cemetery
@The Law not really. Its stated to be a slow degradation. 15 years between zanzibarland and skullface's 'assassination'. Cancer and HIV have gradually degraded people over longer periods of time. It's not a huge jump to assume that he can have mental and physical capacity 15 years later but not 32 years later.
@The Law not that I dont agree it was an unnecessary retcon (pretty much everything in MGS is a retcon) it still fits in ok. It's heavily implied that Zero was 'gone' by 2005.
Cirac1 let’s face it, after mgs3 it’s clear Kojima reaaaaally didn’t wanna keep going with metal gear due to creative fatigue/burnout, once mgs4 happened, and he basically had to direct it, you can tell he got way sloppier with his story telling with mgs4 loaaaaaded with retcons and a lot of story elements either not making almost any sense,(like the people behind the patriots being your radio squad from mgs3,) MGSV has the problem of a story that’s barely there with a lot of important stuff like the truth records being pushed to the side in FUCKIN TAAAAAPES! In all honesty, it was for the best that Kojima stopped being part of metal gear...shame it’s stuck with Konami though cause jesus fuck their attempt with survive felt so barebones and half assed it’s painful.
Awesome! Thanks for this clean recording. I know it might be a big project, but would it be possible to upload the rest of the MGSV tapes with a "clean" audio quality?
The vocal cord parasite are precursor think of them as alpha and beta strains of Fox die. They use the information they got from the vocal cord parasite tests to further pursue genetics technology but still used vocal cord parasites as a base in their research
goku262002 ehhhh thing of the parasite as a precursor to nanomachine,Basically its a doubleedge sword,One it gives you superhuman strength but if speak any language that tied to that strain then you die
